Philippine Foreign Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega said at a news conference in Manila that Filipino authorities would discuss the legal terms of Veloso’s transfer with their Indonesian counterparts. The Indonesian government has asked the Department of Justice in Manila to formally request Veloso’s transfer back to the Philippines, Justice Department spokesperson Mico Clavano said. Veloso traveled to Indonesia in 2010 where her godsister reportedly told her a job as a domestic worker awaited her. That Philippine case helped convince Indonesian authorities to delay Veloso’s execution and eventually consider her transfer back to her country, Clavano said.

President-elect Donald Trump is now receiving intelligence briefings after having declined them during his campaign, according to a source with knowledge of the matter and a former U.S. official. “ODNI is acting consistent with the tradition, in place since 1952, of providing intelligence briefings to the President-elect,” an ODNI spokesperson said. The office would not comment specifically on whether Trump was actually accepting the offer of the briefings. A Trump transition team representative was not able to confirm that Trump had begun receiving the briefings. Before the election, Trump had said he did not want to get the intelligence briefings to avoid any chance he would be accused of leaking information.

CNN —Qatar is suspending its role as a mediator in talks between Israel and Hamas after concluding that the two sides are no longer negotiating in good faith, two sources familiar with the situation tell CNN. Qatar, which has long hosted Hamas’ political office in Doha, has alongside Egypt served as an intermediary for the two sides, which do not officially maintain direct contact. During a temporary ceasefire mediated by Qatar and Egypt last November, Hamas released 105 hostages and Israel released 240 Palestinian prisoners. “As a consequence, the Hamas political office no longer serves its purpose.”Hamas has insisted that any agreement with Israel must lead to a permanent end to the war in Gaza.
