CEO Jim Farley told investors in an earnings call on Wednesday that when it comes to EVs, bigger is not always better — and said that the company's future would depend on its ability to build smaller, cheaper electric vehicles. Advertisement"In ICE [Internal Combustion Engine], a business we've been in for 120 years, the bigger the vehicle, the higher the margin," Farley said. The company continues to lose money on its electric vehicle business amid an industry-wide slowdown in demand for EVs. Ford has quietly created a secretive "skunkworks" team, reportedly based in California, to build this new platform. "We have to start to get back in love with smaller vehicles.

However, Ford went 0 for 2 on Wednesday as an old enemy in warranty expenses returned to bite the Blue Oval. And it's an even more unfortunate setback because Ford management said on its April earnings call that the company has made "real progress" on its goal of making better vehicles. The best story at Ford remains Ford Pro , the unit that houses the company's fleet and commercial vehicles. But last quarter management said the business was tracking toward the higher end of the range, and that no longer appears to be the case. Wiz has walked away from a $23 billion deal to be acquired by Google, in what would have been the search giant's largest-ever deal, telling employees it would pursue an initial public offering as it initially planned. The deal would have nearly doubled the $12 billion valuation of the startup from its most recent round of funding. Alphabet's cloud segment has been under pressure to grow amid competition from frontrunners Microsoft and Amazon, something the Wiz deal would have helped with. The shift benefited Wiz, which can flag security issues for applications and data on the Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Oracle public clouds. In an interview with CNBC's Sara Eisen and Carl Quintanilla at the New York Stock Exchange last year, Eisen asked Rappaport if he wants to take the startup public.

Strong numbers in the company's search and cloud businesses more than offset the slight misses in the YouTube and network units. Cloud recorded a couple of big firsts: exceeding $10 billion in revenue, along with $1 billion in operating income. Whereas investors were — and many still are — concerned about what generative AI might mean for Alphabet's search revenue, the opposite appears to be the case, at least for now. Google Cloud revenue grew roughly 28% to more than $10 billion for the first time. Lawyers told BI that if Gifford wins any or all of the counts, the case could set a new precedent for the creator economy. It could drastically change how influencers create content online and protect their rights. She said this case could spark a fire in the creator community regardless of whether Gifford wins or loses. "The audience online is really smart though, and they'll figure it who the original creator is eventually," Puri said.

DETROIT – Ford Motor will expand production of its large Super Duty trucks to a Canadian plant that was previously set to be converted into an all-electric vehicle hub. The new plans include investing about $3 billion to expand Super Duty production, including $2.3 billion at Ford's Oakville Assembly Complex in Ontario, Canada, Ford said Thursday. The remaining investment will be used to increase production at supporting facilities in the U.S. and Canada, the company said. Ford currently produces Super Duty trucks – the larger siblings of the F-150 full-size pickup used largely by commercial and business customers – at plants in Ohio and Kentucky. Ford said the Canadian plant, which is expected to come online in 2026, will add capacity of roughly 100,000 units annually.

Google is in advanced talks to acquire cybersecurity firm Wiz for $23 billion, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday, citing people familiar with the matter. It had been eyeing an IPO as recently as May, when the company achieved a valuation of $12 billion. Google has made large cyber acquisitions before: The company acquired cybersecurity firm Mandiant for $5.4 billion two years ago. But its reported talks with Wiz would suggest that the company has developed a fresh appetite for M&A, competitive concerns notwithstanding. Google had been in talks to acquire sales software maker Hubspot, CNBC previously reported, but its pursuit had reportedly cooled.
