"At the end of the day, the $7,500 incentive is catastrophically stupid," Moreno told CNBC D.C. "If you don't care what kind of car they drive, then let the markets work," Moreno said. Moreno pushed back against the argument that reversing Inflation Reduction Act incentives like the EV tax credit would effectively cede a key technology race to China. He said that if China is "dramatically ahead of us on EVs – good for them; we're dramatically ahead of them in terms of combustion and hybrids." "We're going to let the marketplace work," Moreno said.

Ford Motor expects to introduce a $30,000 all-electric vehicle that will be profitable in roughly two and a half years, CEO Jim Farley said Friday during the Aspen Ideas Festival. "You have to make a radical change as an [automaker] to get to a profitable EV. Ford's EV unit lost $1.32 billion during the first quarter of this year on 10,000 vehicles wholesaled. Farley said it's crucial for Ford to make profitable EVs in the next five years, as Chinese automakers continue to expand globally. "And if we don't make profitable EVs in the next 5 years, what is the future?

Ford is ending a controversial program that required dealers to invest between $500,000 and $1 million to sell EVs. EV sales are now open to all Ford dealers without certification requirements. The change comes after Ford over-estimated EV sales growth. AdvertisementFord dealers no longer need to invest up to $1 million in order to sell electric vehicles. Ford dealers will no longer be required to invest in certification to get EVs on their lot, opening battery-electric sales to Ford's entire dealership network — a move Gjaja said is designed to grow Ford's EV sales.

Good news is good news: The stock market correctly viewed the good jobs data as good news — no matter what it means for the timing of the first interest rate cut from the Federal Reserve. Those concerns were the catalyst that caused oil to spike late Thursday and the stock market to spiral. The rise of BYD and other Chinese automakers led Tesla CEO Elon Musk in January to warn that Chinese automakers will "demolish" global rivals without trade barriers. Caresoft, an engineering benchmarking and consulting firm, has already torn down one China-built BYD Seagull and is preparing to do another. Michael Wayland / CNBCThe consulting firm tore apart the BYD Seagull piece by piece to benchmark the small EV against vehicles from other startups and traditional automakers. Its initial study of the BYD Seagull found it to be efficiently and simplistically designed, engineered and executed, but with unexpected quality and anticipated reliability. Forget Tesla , the real competition in electric vehicles is low-cost Chinese automakers. Farley wants to be prepared even if the U.S. government were to step in to curtail Chinese automakers' access. Outlook Ford investors shouldn't be concerned in the short term since Chinese EV competitors won't enter the market overnight. To that end, a group of lawmakers has urged the White House to boost tariffs on Chinese vehicles and figure out a way to be "prepared to address the coming wave" of Chinese vehicles by way of U.S. other trading partners. The cost of production will become more efficient, resulting in a more competitive and hopefully profitable Ford EV product.

DETROIT – Ford Motor's third-quarter U.S. new vehicle sales increased 7.7% compared with a year earlier, led by higher sales of traditional pickup trucks across its lineup. The Detroit automaker on Wednesday reported a 15.3% increase in truck sales compared with a 5.1% decline in cars and sales of SUVs that were essentially flat. The automaker's sales of electric vehicles were up by 14.8% during the quarter to nearly 21,000 units. Ford hybrid sales, led by the F-150 and Maverick hybrid trucks, posted third-quarter sales of 34,861 vehicles – up 41.4% over a year earlier. An ongoing strike by the United Auto Workers union against the Detroit automakers, including Ford, was not expected to directly impact sales much during the quarter.

Most automakers sell cars with a traditional franchise model, while Tesla sells direct-to-consumer. Auto executives still don't think the Tesla sales model will catch on — despite some pretty substantial shifts in the auto retail space already taking place. Automaker demands put some dealers on the chopping blockBut it's been a huge debate in the industry as auto dealers are a strong lobbying force, so much so that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis banned direct-to-consumer car sales in the state, with the exception of Tesla and EV startups that never had franchised dealers. Kerrigan experts have suggested this might be one way auto manufacturers are attempting to push out their dealerships amid the EV transition.

July 17 (Reuters) - Ford Motor (F.N) deepened a price war in the electric-vehicle industry on Monday by slashing the prices of its F-150 Lightning trucks, including a 17% cut for the base model, as it aims to boost its share of an EV market dominated by Tesla (TSLA.O). The Detroit automaker, which had raised Lightning prices earlier this year, said it was able to cut prices on improvements in scale and battery raw material costs. The move comes amid a price war started by Tesla a few months ago, which has seen the EVs of legacy automakers piling up at dealers as sales slow. Ford also said it has temporarily closed its Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Michigan to complete final plant upgrades as it aims to triple the facility's annual run rate to 150,000 Lightning trucks, beginning this fall. Battery raw material prices have been one of the factors that pushed up EV prices.
