St. Olaf College boasted an 87.6% voter turnout rate in 2020, taking home the top prize in the All In Campus Democracy Challenge as the most civically engaged college campus in the country. The small liberal arts college reached that number with help from its “election ambassador program,” and this year, the school is looking to break its own record. “We are all about interpersonal connections,” said junior Roxi Wessel, an election ambassador. Several factors make St. Olaf the highest-voting college in the country, including its nonpartisan approach to the election ambassador program. Jen McAndrew, from Tuft University’s Tisch College of Civic Life, said that while Minnesota makes campus voting accessible, laws in other states are creating more barriers to entry.

London CNN —Three economists were awarded the Nobel Prize Monday for their research into how the nature of institutions helps explain why some countries become rich and others remain poor. Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson and James Robinson will share the prize, which carries a cash award of 11 million Swedish kronor ($1 million). The authors warned that “the current path of AI is neither good for the economy nor for democracy.”The latest Nobel Prize in economics was announced in Stockholm on October 14, 2024. In “Why Nations Fail,” he and Robinson argued that China, because it lacks inclusive institutions, would not be able to sustain its economic growth. Nuon Toeun is neither an opposition leader nor a well-known activist. Radio Free Asia said Nuon Toeun was a supporter of the opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party, which was dissolved ahead of the 2018 general election as part of a crackdown on the opposition. The Khmer Movement for Democracy, a movement formed by opposition leaders in exile, condemned Nuon Toeun’s deportation from Malaysia. Trump has said he “took a bullet for democracy,” and attacked Wray on Truth Social over his testimony. The hospital called it a ‘bullet wound to the ear,’ and that is what it was. Donald Trump has openly said that if he wins in November and returns to office, he won’t be a dictator, “except for Day 1.” Kevin Roberts, the president of the Heritage Foundation, the right-wing think tank that organized the potentially country-altering Project 2025, has said, “We are in the process of the second American Revolution, which will remain bloodless if the left allows it to be.” And on Monday at a rally for JD Vance, the Republican vice-presidential nominee, an Ohio state senator named George Lang said, “I’m afraid if we lose this one, it’s going to take a civil war to save the country, and it will be saved.”Into this storm, Vice President Kamala Harris has been drafted as the new best hope for the Democratic Party and perhaps for democracy as we’ve known it; indeed, President Biden’s replacement this late in the 2024 campaign could have been only she. After Biden’s disconcerting debate performance in June, I, like many others, was concerned that the debate over changing the top of the ticket would be a pretext for Democratic insiders to swing open the door to multiple alternative candidates; that they were operating under a delusion and didn’t understand the stubborn math of the Democratic coalition. Fortunately, Democrats appear to have avoided another intraparty skirmish. Exhausted by weeks of infighting over Biden’s withdrawal, they’ve quickly coalesced around Harris, who has collected enough delegate support to make her their presumptive nominee.
