CNN —Matthew McConaughey is a native of Texas, but that’s not the only reason he and his family now reside there. During a recent appearance on the “Good Trouble” podcast, the Oscar-winning actor spoke with tennis pro Nick Kyrgios about his life and career. One thing he learned, McConaughey said, was the importance of saying no. Hollywood said no, no, no, no, you should stay there, stay there.”The “Magic Mike” star said “since I couldn’t do what I wanted to do, I stopped doing what I was doing.”“I moved down to the ranch in Texas,” McConaughey said. It paid off for McConaughey, who went on to nab more serious roles like his work in “Dallas Buyers Club” for which he won a best actor Academy Award in 2014.

The striking fossil is a newly identified species of arthropod, a distant relative of modern-day horseshoe crabs, scorpions, and spiders, that slightly resembles a modern-day shrimp. Named Lomankus edgecombei, the arthropod is a remarkably bright golden color because it’s preserved in three dimensions by iron pyrite — a mineral better known as fool’s gold. Lead study author Luke Parry began examining the fossils when he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Yale Peabody Museum, where three of the specimens were held. courtesy Luke Parry/Yu Liu/Ruixin RanToday, there are more known species of arthropod than any other group of animals on Earth. “Sometimes we see fossils preserved as opals or quartz crystals, or in this case, fool’s gold,” Brusatte said.

For example, one post shows grainy photographs of Nutter Butter cookies in a dollhouse with peanut butter smeared everywhere, set to a spooky soundtrack. Another video shows a psychedelic style Mr. Nutter Butter in technicolor with a Nutter Butter cookie being shoved into a baby croc sandal in the background; that got 1.1 million views. In it, Mr. Nutter Butter chases a character named Aiden (a real fan who has commented on every post) who is in turn chasing a Nutter Butter cookie. With four weeks to go until Election Day, the 2024 polls continue to show a presidential race that remains on a knife’s edge — and well within the margin of error. It’s also true in the polls of the battleground states that will ultimately decide the presidential contest. Harris and Trump are essentially tied, perhaps with a slight lean toward Trump, in the Sun Belt states of Arizona, Georgia and North Carolina. And this is a fundamentally different race than the one that existed before President Joe Biden stepped aside from his re-election campaign and endorsed Harris. The 2024 race, ultimately, will be decided by turnout, concluding news events, how the third-party/undecided vote breaks and other factors.

New York CNN —Chipotle is already getting into the Halloween spirit. The fast-casual chain announced a costume collection with Spirit Halloween Wednesday, the seasonal Halloween costume store that pops up every year in abandoned storefronts. Two years ago, it posted a fake “Chipotle Fork” bodysuit with the caption “Found ur costume.” Then last year, another fake “Chipotle Napkin” costume showed up on its Instagram. The Chipotle Fork costume, for example, is just a plain black, polyester bodysuit. “Our popular Halloween tradition, Boorito, began with a burrito-themed costume contest and now we’re taking it to the next level with the launch of our first-ever costume collection in collaboration with Spirit Halloween,” said Chris Brandt, chief brand officer at Chipotle in a statement.

This digital ad posted by Republican Senate candidate Dave McCormick in Pennsylvania, about a week before Biden eventually dropped his bid, was the blueprint. Almost immediately, Democrats saw a surge of support — mostly from disillusioned Democratic voters. As of this writing, it’s now Republicans in battleground states and districts who are begging their nominee to change course. As for the GOP, Trump and his allies have done everything they can to mold the GOP in Trump’s image, and anyone who doesn’t share that view has essentially been purged. Of course, the real challenge for both Republicans will be figuring out how to navigate Trump’s appearances in their respective states.

CNN —A year ago, NATO heads of state gathered in Vilnius, Lithuania, for their annual summit. He called NATO’s unwillingness to establish a concrete timeframe for Ukraine’s membership “unprecedented and absurd,” causing consternation in the Biden administration and nearly derailing the summit. Several key NATO members, however, haven’t been especially eager to come to the defense of Ukraine. Why would Putin consider a ceasefire or diplomatic settlement with Kyiv if he knew that NATO membership for Ukraine was just around the corner? Work is part of our identity here in a way that people from other countries find at turns fascinating and pathological. The bill would aim to ensure that people aren’t pinged with work emails, texts or calls outside their established work hours, with notable exceptions for emergencies or scheduling issues. If the boss intrudes on your non-work window three times, you can report them and the state could impose fines starting at $100. No one likes pausing Succession to respond to a 9pm request, but the guilt of ignoring it and wondering whether your boss will be mad at you is also, like, not fun. A chorus of political analysts on the center left is once again arguing that the Democratic Party must reclaim a significant share of racially and culturally conservative white working-class voters if it is to regain majority status. “For Victory in 2024, Democrats Must Win Back the Working Class,” Will Marshall, the founder and president of the Progressive Policy Institute, wrote in October 2023. “Can Democrats Win Back the Working Class?” Jared Abbott and Fred DeVeaux of the Center for Working-Class Politics asked in June 2023; “Democrats Need Biden to Appeal to Working-Class Voters” is how David Byler, the former Washington Post data columnist put it that same month. First, is the Democratic attempt to recapture white working class voters a fool’s errand? COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio has banned gender-affirming care for minors and restricted transgender women’s and girls’ participation on sports teams, a move that has families of transgender children scrambling over how best to care for them. The new law bans gender-affirming surgeries and hormone therapies, and restricts mental health care for transgender individuals under 18. The measure also bans transgender girls and women from girls and women’s sports teams at both the K-12 and collegiate level. One advocate, while singing that Jesus loves transgender children, was escorted out of the Senate chamber. At least 23 states have now enacted laws restricting or banning gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors, and many of those states face lawsuits.

NEW YORK (AP) — The fallout from the actors strike, now past 100 days, has been widespread throughout the film industry. As the strike pushes into Hollywood’s awards season, it’s increasingly muting the reception for some of the best performances of the year.
