Justin Sun, founder of blockchain platform Tron, poses for a photograph in Hong Kong, China, on Friday, May 8, 2020. Tron blockchain founder Justin Sun has invested $30 million into Donald Trump's crypto project, World Liberty Financial, he announced Monday. "We are thrilled to invest $30 million in World Liberty Financial @worldlibertyfi as its largest investor," Sun wrote in a post on X. In exchange, Trump's LLC received billions of tokens and the right to 75% of revenues above a $30 million threshold. Sales now appear to have crossed the $30 million threshold to trigger revenue distribution to Trump's LLC.

Donald Trump's crypto project, World Liberty Financial, published a 13-page document on Thursday, describing its mission, how tokens can be allocated, and indicating that the Republican presidential nominee and his family could take home 75% of net revenue. The paper released on Thursday shows that Trump and his family assume no liability. Folkman previously had a company called Date Hotter Girls and reportedly helped develop crypto project Dough Finance. Folkman previously said just 20% of WLF's tokens would be allotted to the founding team, which includes the Trump family. The paper calls Trump the "chief crypto advocate."

World Liberty Financial — which bills itself as a crypto bank where customers will be encouraged to borrow, lend and invest in digital coins — began its token sale on Tuesday morning. On Monday, project co-founder Zachary Folkman bragged in a pre-launch stream on X that "well over 100,000 people" were whitelisted to invest. "However, these numbers are just, in my opinion, unheard of, and I think we're setting all sorts of new records in crypto." The platform says, so far, it has sold more than 788 million tokens at $0.015 per token. That is less than 4% of the 20 billion tokens made available for public sale and amounts to around $11.8 million, still well off the $300 million fundraising target.

Donald Trump's new crypto project is off to a rough start. But WLF's website suffered regular and lengthy outages for much of the morning and early afternoon, contributing to a limited number of sales. That's less than 3% of the 20 billion tokens made available for public sale. Over the course of the day, the website frequently showed a page saying, "We are under maintenance." The glitchy launch is a potential setback to the Republican presidential nominee with just three weeks until the election.

World Liberty Financial is separate and apart from Trump Media & Technology Group , the parent company of social media platform Truth Social. Trump Media, known by ticker symbol DJT, started trading in March, after going public through a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC). On Tuesday, the former president and current Republican nominee aims to launch WLFI, the token accompanying his new crypto project called World Liberty Financial. Trump owns about 57% of DJT's outstanding shares, but his potential control over World Liberty Financial is more opaque. Folkman added that WLF would publish the "long-awaited" roadmap for the project on Tuesday, in tandem with the token sale.

Three of Trump's children are employees of World Liberty Financial, including his 18-year-old son Barron, who CoinDesk reported holds the title of "DeFi visionary" at the company. World Liberty Financial's spokesperson, Jim Redner, told BI he has "no information." Both were involved in a project called Dough Finance, whose source code appears remarkably similar to that of World Liberty Financial, Coindesk reported. It's still unclear when World Liberty Financial will begin allowing investors to purchase its tokens. "Attention community: Please be aware of scams and fake tokens," World Liberty Financial posted on Telegram last month.

For over a month, the former president and his family have been pumping up a project called World Liberty Financial, promising that it will do many things at once. He’s also part of the small group of World Liberty Financial founders, according to an internal report on the project obtained by CoinDesk. Witkoff was seated to Trump’s right during Monday night’s spaces, and described how he brought the Trump family together two crypto entrepreneurs. Alongside Trump and Witkoff, founders include Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump and Barron Trump, as well as Witkoff’s son, Zach Witkoff, according to a person briefed by a member of the group’s founding team. CNBC reached out to Eric Trump and Witkoff to ask about their leadership roles within World Liberty, and didn’t immediately receive a reply.
