Trump and other defendants had appealed that ruling, and the Court of Appeals in June halted proceedings in the case pending the outcome of that effort. With his comeback victory over Vice President Kamala Harris in the books, Trump can rest easy. But he has not yet escaped from liability in a handful of high-profile civil cases, where he has been ordered to pay combined penalties of over $570 million. "In theory, there should be no effect" from Trump's election on those civil matters, former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani told CNBC. "It's well established that while a sitting president can't be prosecuted, he can face civil cases," Rahmani said. A state-level criminal case in Georgia, alleging Trump illegally meddled in that state's 2020 election, is also on ice.

CNN —GSK has agreed to pay up to $2.2 billion to settle most lawsuits in US state courts claiming that a discontinued version of the heartburn drug Zantac caused cancer, the company announced on Wednesday. GSK also said it would pay $70 million to settle a related whistleblower lawsuit filed by a Connecticut laboratory. Pfizer has agreed to settle most of the Zantac cases against it in state court, according to its most recent financial statement, and Sanofi in April announced that it was settling about 4,000 cases. The case returns to Judge Tanya Chutkan one month after the Supreme Court issued a game-changing ruling on presidential power. But the Supreme Court interceded earlier this year and put the case on pause to consider Trump’s claims of presidential immunity. Attorneys working on the case believe that Chutkan will move quickly with the case back in her jurisdiction, according to sources familiar with their thinking. Any move she makes will be under extreme scrutiny, given that it’s the only remining federal case against Trump after the Florida federal judge overseeing his classified documents case, Aileen Cannon, dismissed those criminal charges against Trump and his two co-defendants. Cannon appeared to hold hearings on nearly every motion in the Trump case before her, but Chutkan often rules without hearing from the parties in person.

Washington CNN —A federal judge on Wednesday refused to dismiss former President Donald Trump’s lawsuit against ABC News and George Stephanopoulos over the anchor’s assertion that a jury concluded Trump had “raped” E. Jean Carroll. Trump filed the lawsuit in Florida federal court earlier this year, arguing that Stephanopoulos and the network defamed him when Stephanopoulos said during a contentious on-air interview with Rep. Nancy Mace that a jury found Trump had “raped” Carroll, a writer whose own cases against Trump led to him being found liable for sexual abuse. ABC News did not immediately respond to a CNN request for comment. In the Trump-ABC lawsuit, US District Judge Cecilia Altonaga, an appointee of former President George W. Bush, wrote Wednesday that these definitions were different enough to let the case move forced. His analysis necessarily focused on what Carroll had and had not proved at trial, as well as the harm Carroll experienced from (Trump’s) abuse.

Hunter Biden, son of US President Joe Biden, walks upon arrival at Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington, DC, on July 1, 2024. The motions follow the ruling Monday by Florida federal court Judge Aileen Cannon tossing out Smith's prosecution of Trump over his retention of classified documents after leaving the White House. Cannon ruled that Smith's appointment as special counsel violated the Appointments Clause of the U.S. Constitution. He is awaiting trial in Los Angeles federal court on federal tax crime charges, which Biden's lawyers likewise are asking a judge there to toss out. That ruling related to Smith's pending prosecution of Trump in Washington, D.C., federal court for crimes associated with Trump's attempt to reverse his loss to President Biden in the 2020 election.

Special counsel Jack Smith on Wednesday filed a notice appealing the stunning decision earlier this week by Florida court federal Judge Aileen Cannon that dismissed the criminal classified documents case against former President Donald Trump. Smith's appeal, which was expected, will be heard in the 11th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in Atlanta, which reviews cases arising from Florida federal courts. Peter Carr, a spokesman for Smith, said Wednesday, "We have no comment beyond the filing itself at this time." The Democrat-led Justice Department should drop these politically motivated, election interference efforts against President Trump immediately." The appeal is likely to end up at the U.S. Supreme Court, regardless of how the 11th Circuit appeals court rules.

CNN —Judge Aileen Cannon had been on the federal bench for little more than a year when a senior judge offered to preside over one of her first criminal trials in her isolated south Florida courthouse. In her seven years as a Justice Department attorney, Cannon participated on the trial teams of just four criminal cases. Still, Cannon has asked questions in the Trump case that appear out of left field. Her orientation toward such legal rabbit holes is not distinct to the Trump case, veterans of her courtroom say. Ultimately, nearly every attorney CNN spoke to said that Cannon, despite the criticism, is unwavering in her beliefs about how each case in her courtroom should proceed.

Cannon is planning on holding a sprawling hearing on Trump’s request to declare Jack Smith’s appointment as special counsel invalid, signaling she could be more willing than any other trial judge to veto the special prosecutor’s authority. Wednesday, Cannon went further, adding a hearing on a gag order request from prosecutors to limit Trump’s rhetoric about law enforcement and allotting more time to hear arguments on the special counsel issue. Cannon’s signal of willingness to entertain challenges to the special counsel comes in the same week Republicans are bearing down on Attorney General Merrick Garland for his use of special counsels. A third group says the Department of Justice’s use of a special counsel should be upheld. Cannon still agreed to the hearing Trump wanted.

The Florida federal judge overseeing the criminal classified documents case against former President Donald Trump has been the target of more than 1,000 complaints in just one week this month raising allegations of her handling of the case, a top appeals court judge revealed in an order. And "many of the complaints against Judge Cannon also question the correctness of her rulings or her delays in issuing rulings in the case," Pryor wrote. "Although many of the complaints allege an improper motive in delaying the case, the allegations are speculative and unsupported by any evidence," Pryor wrote. "The Complaints also do not establish that Judge Cannon was required to recuse herself from the case because she was appointed by then-President Trump." "Some of those complaints have been acted upon, and others will be acted upon in due course," Pryor wrote, without revealing the nature of those actions.

The 6-3 ruling, authored by liberal Justice Elena Kagan, affirmed a lower court's decision that favored producer Sherman Nealy, who sued a Warner subsidiary and others in Florida federal court in 2018. Nealy has said that his label Music Specialist owns rights to the electronic dance song "Jam the Box" by Tony Butler, also known as Pretty Tony. Warner artist Flo Rida, whose given name is Tramar Dillard, incorporated elements of "Jam the Box" into his 2008 song "In the Ayer." The producer requested damages for alleged copyright infringement dating back to 2008. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed that decision and said there was "no bar to damages in a timely action."

Donald Trump on Thursday afternoon lost two separate attempts to dismiss criminal charges against him in his Florida and Georgia cases. In Florida federal court, Judge Aileen Cannon rejected Trump's bid to drop charges against him related to his alleged mishandling of hundreds of classified documents after he left the White House. In a brief order, Cannon wrote that Trump's argument, which hinged on his interpretation of the Presidential Records Act, was an insufficient basis for dismissal. That ruling came about two hours after Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee denied Trump's attempt to dismiss his Georgia election interference case on the grounds that it violated his free speech rights. The twin losses came one day after New York Supreme Court Judge Juan Merchan denied a request by Trump to delay his upcoming criminal hush money trial.

A vehicle carrying former U.S. President Donald Trump is driven to the Alto Lee Adams Sr. U.S. Courthouse on March 01, 2024 in Fort Pierce, Florida. Lawyers for former President Donald Trump on Friday urged a Florida federal court judge to schedule his criminal trial on charges related to retaining classified documents for after November's presidential election, saying it would be "unfair" to have earlier. Trump's lawyers, at a hearing, called the new proposal by prosecutors for a July 8 start date for that trial "completely unworkable" and "an impossibility" for Trump, who is the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, according to NBC News. Lawyers for Department of Justice special counsel Jack Smith, who is prosecuting Trump, argued to Judge Aileen Cannon that the former president has known about the hush money trial date for months, but only now is calling for a lengthy delay of the Florida case.

U.S. President Joe Biden takes questions from reporters on classified documents as he delivers remarks on the economy and inflation in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 12, 2023. Neither President Joe Biden nor anyone else is expected to be criminally charged in an investigation into how classified documents ended up in Biden's Delaware home and a private office, NBC News reported Tuesday. A senior law enforcement official told NBC that a report on that probe by Department of Justice special counsel Robert Hur will be made public in the coming days. By law, such documents should have been sent to the National Archives after Biden ceased being vice president in early 2017. CNN —Disney is appealing a major setback earlier this week in its ongoing legal and political battle with Florida’s Republican governor Ron DeSantis. On Thursday, Disney filed a notice of appeal, challenging a Florida federal judge’s decision to throw out its case accusing DeSantis of punishing Disney for exercising its right to free speech. The judge ruled that Disney lacked standing to sue DeSantis and that the company’s claims against the governor’s oversight board failed on merit — a win for DeSantis. On Wednesday, a Disney spokesperson said the company was undeterred, despite the initial dismissal. The board has threatened to hike taxes, raise utility rates and develop the land around the entertainment giant’s Central Florida theme parks.

A prosecutor asked a judge to Friday to schedule the Georgia election interference criminal trial of former President Donald Trump and his co-defendants to begin on Aug. 5 — exactly three months before the 2024 presidential Election Day. "The State clearly retains the logistical and prosecutorial capabilities to try all of the remaining Defendants together," Willis said in her motion. Trump's campaign spokesman said, "Radical Democrat Fani Willis has again proven that her case is purely political, designed to interfere with President Trump's re-election by demanding a trial date in the most vital time in President Trump's winning campaign." "Crooked Joe Biden knows he can't beat President Trump and this corrupt step by Fani Willis is just further proof of that fact," the spokesman said. The Manhattan Supreme Court judge in that case has said he will willing to re-schedule it to avoid a conflict with Trump's trial earlier that same month in Washington.
