Hurricane Milton dumped so much rain over parts of Florida’s Tampa Bay area that it qualified as a 1-in-1,000-year rainfall event. Other significant rainfall totals across Florida included 14.01 inches in Clearwater Beach, 13.09 inches in Baskin, 11.43 inches in Tampa and 10.12 inches in Seminole. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency for Tampa and St. Petersburg that lasted until 2:30 a.m. Preliminary measures on Wednesday indicated that 7 inches had fallen in St. Augustine, 7.38 inches in Titusville and 3.05 inches in Daytona Beach, according to the National Hurricane Center. CNN —Hurricane Milton slammed into Florida’s Gulf Coast on Wednesday night, making landfall as a powerful Category 3 storm. The intense hurricane spawned tornadoes, dumped rain across much of the state, left millions without power and claimed at least 12 lives, including five people in St. Lucie County. Milton is the third hurricane to hit Florida this year — which has only happened during five other hurricane seasons since 1871. Many areas in Florida are also recovering from the aftermath of a Milton-spurred torrent “supercharged” tornadoes, according to National Hurricane Center Director Michael Brennan. CNN —The exceptionally warm water of the Gulf of Mexico that supercharged deadly Helene last month was made up to 500 times more likely by human-caused climate change, which also ramped up the hurricane’s wind and rain, according to a new scientific analysis. These ultra-warm ocean temperatures were made between 200 and 500 times more likely by climate change, driven by humans burning fossil fuels, according to the World Weather Attribution, a network of scientists that calculates the role of climate change in extreme weather events using real world data and climate models. Hurricanes as intense as Helene are now about 2.5 times more likely in the region, the study found. CNN —Taylor Swift has made a significant donation toward helping those affected by Hurricanes Milton and Helene. On Wednesday, Feeding America CEO Claire Babineaux-Fontenot said in a statement posted to the organization’s Instagram page that they’re “incredibly grateful” for the superstar singer’s $5 million donation toward hurricane relief efforts. Swift joins the likes of country legend Dolly Parton in contributing to the hurricane relief effort. She also pledged a $1 million personal donation to the Mountain Ways Foundation, a registered charitable organization dedicated to providing immediate assistance to Helene flood victims. Hurricane warnings were issued Tuesday for a wide stretch of Florida’s Gulf Coast ahead of Tropical Storm Helene’s anticipated landfall as a major hurricane later this week, forecasters said. Officials in Mexico also issued hurricane warnings for a large section of the Yucatan Peninsula, stretching from the tourist hotspot of Tulum to Cabo Catoche, on the peninsula’s northern tip, the National Hurricane Center said in an afternoon advisory. The storm is expected to strengthen into a hurricane on Wednesday as it moves across the eastern Gulf of Mexico before becoming a major storm Thursday, according to the advisory. The “storm surge, wind, and rainfall impacts will extend well away from the center, particularly to the east of the system.

The remnants of Hurricane Idalia were forecast to regain strength and become a tropical storm again over the weekend as it approached Bermuda, days after the storm made landfall along Florida’s Gulf Coast and swept across the Southeast. At 11 p.m. Eastern time, the storm was 45 miles southwest of Bermuda, where a tropical storm warning was in effect.
