SpaceX launched the sixth test flight of its Starship rocket on Tuesday, as the company looks to keep up momentum of the mammoth vehicle's development. There are not any people on board the Starship flight. The Starship system is designed to be fully reusable and aims to become a new method of flying cargo and people beyond Earth. Fully stacked on the Super Heavy booster, Starship stands 397 feet tall and is about 30 feet in diameter.

JAKARTA, Indonesia — At least nine people died after Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in eastern Indonesia erupted on Sunday, spewing explosive plumes of lava and forcing authorities to evacuate several nearby villages, officials said Monday. Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, located on Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara province, erupted on Sunday at 11:57 p.m. local time (11:57 a.m. “We have started evacuating residents since this morning to other villages” that are located about 13 miles from the crater, he said. In May, a volcano on the remote island of Halmahera, Mount Ibu, led to the evacuation of people from seven villages. North Sulawesi’s Ruang volcano also erupted in the spring, prompting authorities to evacuate more than 12,000 people.

The eruption at Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki just after midnight on Monday spewed thick brownish ash as high as 2,000 meters (6,500 feet) into the air and hot ashes hit a nearby village, burning down several houses including a convent of Catholic nuns, said Firman Yosef, an official at the Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki monitoring post. Authorities also raised the danger level and widened the danger zone for Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki on Monday, following a series of eruptions that began last week. President Joe Biden hosted a formal ceremony Wednesday to publicly celebrate his executive order establishing an initiative to increase funding for Hispanic-serving institutions and create a board of advisors on HSIs. Flores said the executive order shows a federal understanding of how crucial HSIs are to the future of the nation. The more than 500 HSIs in the U.S. and Puerto Rico serve more than 4.7 million students every year, according to federal data. Many students are low-income, and nearly a third are eligible for Pell grants, which are federal scholarships for students in need. “The president’s executive order will strengthen these critical institutions and build their capacity to provide economic mobility for all their students.”

BEIJING — Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba 's international arm on Wednesday launched an updated version of its artificial intelligence-powered translation tool that, it says, is better than products offered by Google, DeepL and ChatGPT. Alibaba's fast-growing international unit released the AI translation product as an update to one unveiled about a year ago, which it says already has 500,000 merchant users. Sellers based in one country can use the translation tool to create product pages in the language of the target market. Large language models power artificial intelligence applications such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, which can also translate text. Alibaba's translation tool is based on its own model called Qwen.
