Union workers are voting on contracts from each of Chrysler-owner Stellantis (STLAM.MI), GM (GM.N) and Ford, after the first coordinated strike against Detroit's Big Three automakers. Of the total votes cast at Ford's various facilities so far, 70.7% of workers have voted in favor of the deal, according to a UAW vote tracker. Workers at some of the company's major plants including the Dearborn Truck plant in Michigan are yet to vote.

The UAW Local 862 union said that 55% of the production workers voted against ratifying the contract. However, 69% of the skilled trades workers cast votes in favor of the contract. The union did not disclose the overall percentage of the votes in favor of the deal, or the total number of votes cast.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, the UAW Local 598 said 51.8% of votes cast were against the proposed deal. The vote signals that approval of the deal, which is set to raise costs significantly for GM, is not guaranteed. Union workers are voting on contracts from each of Chrysler-owner Stellantis (STLAM.MI), General Motors and Ford Motor (F.N), after the first coordinated strike against Detroit's Big Three automakers.

DETROIT – General Motors plans to invest more than $1 billion in two Michigan plants for production of next-generation heavy-duty trucks, the company said Monday. Another $233 million will be invested in the automaker's Flint Metal Center to support production of the vehicles. Despite GM's commitment to exclusively offer all-electric vehicles by 2035, the company continues to invest in traditional vehicles such as the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra heavy-duty pickups. In 2022, GM reported sales of its heavy-duty pickups increased by 38% compared to the prior year, amounting to nearly 288,000 trucks sold. For investors, UAW negotiations are typically a short-term headwind every four years that result in higher costs.

The $918 million investment, which GM announced Friday, is despite the automaker's plans to exclusively offer all-electric consumer vehicles by 2035. A majority of the investment — $579 million — will go toward preparing GM's Flint Engine Operations plant in Michigan for the automaker's sixth-generation family of small-block V-8 gas engines. The engines are used in some of the automaker's most highly profitable products, such as its full-size pickup trucks and SUVs. GM said work at the Flint facility will begin immediately, signaling the next-generation V-8 engines are on the horizon. The last new family of V-8 engines came about in 2013.
