A brush fire broke out Friday night in Prospect Park, in the Brooklyn borough of New York City, amid a drought that has been plaguing the northeastern U.S. for weeks. The New York City Fire Department posted about the fire on X at around 8 p.m. and said "operations are ongoing." On Thursday, "temperatures soared to well above normal readings," the National Weather Service office in New York said. The entire New York City region was under a red flag warning Friday, the weather service said, with wind gusts up to 30 mph possible. Prospect Park is located between the neighborhoods of Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Prospect Lefferts Gardens, Flatbush and Windsor Terrace in Brooklyn and boasts a zoo and an ice rink in its 526 acres.

One of the patients in the McDonald's outbreak suffered from that condition, known as hemolytic uremic syndrome. Hedberg is also a member of the McDonald's Food Safety Advisory Council, but said he has not worked with the company on its response to the outbreak. The size of the outbreak "would imply widespread undercooking by many different individual McDonald's restaurants" if beef was the culprit, according to Hedberg. For example, rival Wendy's dealt with its own link to an E. coli outbreak two years ago. However, that transparency means more media coverage, which reminds consumers about the crisis and risks scaring them away from McDonald's restaurants.

There was a time, though, when any Yankees player on his way to face the Dodgers could have walked. O’Malley could not fathom that the Brooklyn Dodgers would move to Queens, so instead he set about moving the team to Los Angeles. Brooklyn Dodgers officials and employees pose in front of the club's plane at La Guardia in New York, before taking off for Los Angeles on October 23, 1957. Speaking to the New York Times in 2007, the Dodgers’ ex-general manager Buzzie Bavasi remembered that the franchise’s front office held a vote on whether to move. The FDA reverses its ban on Juul e-cigarettes
  + stars: | 2024-06-06 | by ( Rob Wile | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
The Food and Drug Administration announced Thursday that it has reversed its ban on Juul e-cigarettes while it reviews new court decisions and considers updated information provided by the vape-maker. The FDA first stopped the company from marketing its products in 2022, but they have stayed on shelves pending an appeal. Even as Juul has pursued its appeal of the 2022 marketing ban, that initial FDA ruling significantly disrupted the company's finances, prompting a bailout from two of its largest investors, The Wall Street Journal has reported. Juul also continues to face lawsuits from consumers saying its products harmed their health. To date, the FDA has given only 23 e-cigarette products, made by just three companies, official approval to be marketed to consumers.

Eighteen teenagers and young men who the authorities said belonged to street gangs were charged on Wednesday with unleashing a wave of gun violence in Brooklyn that killed two 16-year-old boys and injured 10 others over a three-year period. Some of the people charged were as young as 14 when they committed crimes that included firing guns at people, according to prosecutors. During a news conference, Eric Gonzalez, the Brooklyn district attorney, played a series of surveillance videos that showed young men and boys, wearing hoods or masks, opening fire on busy streets, often in broad daylight. One video showed a young couple walking with a stroller on a sidewalk just before shooting erupted. In another clip, people could be seen scattering, running into stores or ducking behind garbage cans to avoid bullets.

PepsiCo on Tuesday reported quarterly earnings and revenue that beat analysts' expectations, despite a recall of some Quaker Foods cereal and bars that dented U.S. volume. The company's organic revenue, which excludes acquisitions, divestitures and foreign exchange, increased 2.7% in the quarter. The company's food division saw its volume decrease 0.5%, while its beverage segment reported flat volume. The Quaker Foods recall dented Pepsi's organic volume by roughly 1%. For the full year, the company is expecting organic revenue will rise at least 4% and core constant currency earnings per share will climb at least 8%.

Millennial homebuyers aren't just leaving the urban core — they're moving to the farthest reaches of the suburbs. The 'youthification' of cities and far-flung suburbsFor nearly two decades millennials morphed dense, amenity-rich urban neighborhoods across America into exclusive playgrounds for the young and childless. Compared with Gen Xers and baby boomers, a much larger share of millennials moved to cities in their young adulthood — and stayed for longer. The pandemic only steepened a trend that's been ousting millennials from cities for years: rising housing costs in cities. Millennials could help transform suburban sprawl into town-like communities or small cities with more third places and a stronger sense of community, Panova says.

Cars drive along a flooded street on Church Avenue amid a coastal storm on September 29, 2023 in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn borough New York City. And more than a decade after Hurricane Sandy forced officials to rethink the meaning of climate resilience in New York City, it appears there's still much to be done. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley, calling the storm a "life-threatening rainfall event." The storm caused about $19 billion in damage to New York City. In densely populated cities like New York, flooding risks are heightened because of the built environment and lack of green spaces.

The woman, 37, was found dead in the living room with multiple stab wounds, including on her face, according to a law enforcement official who was not authorized to publicly discuss details of the case. There are colonies in virtually every neighborhood with suitable nooks and crannies — in Bushwick, in Washington Heights, in Ozone Park. There may be as many as half a million feral cats padding around New York City, but no one knows for sure. “No one knows, and the city doesn’t care to know,” said Will Zweigart, the founder of Flatbush Cats, the nonprofit group that Ms. Gabriel and scores of others volunteer with. “Because if they knew, they would be accountable to do something about it.”There are a number of reasons for the explosion in feral cat colonies. Some people, fearing that their unwanted cats would be euthanized if they were taken to a shelter, simply let them out on the streets and hoped for the best.

Michael M. Santiago | Getty ImagesThere's one group of people that's being disproportionality hurt by high inflation: women. First, a jump in child care prices has started to pressure women out of the workforce. Child care inflation, which has increased 214% from 1990 to 2022, has outpaced average family income gains, which have risen 143%. Surprisingly, over 50% of parents spend over 20% of their income on child care in the US." Women and minorities are underrepresented in higher-wage industries, such as technology or finance, that are more insulated from inflation pressures, Gosai noted.
Carbon dioxide from these boilers wafts up chimneys and into the air, one of the city’s biggest sources of global warming emissions. “And we expect that it won’t be the last.”The boiler releases carbon dioxide. The remaining carbon dioxide was then chilled to minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit and turned to liquid. The system currently captures about 60 percent of the carbon dioxide emitted by the Grand Tier’s boilers, Mr. Asparro said. While they’re paying for the carbon dioxide, they are not charging a premium for their blocks.
