There is no place in America for this kind of violence — for any violence ever, period. “I’m sincerely grateful that he’s doing well and recovering,” Mr. Biden said. And the White House said that Mr. Biden would keep his campaign events in Las Vegas. Mr. Biden will speak at an NAACP conference on Tuesday and a UnidosUS conference on Wednesday, even as Mr. Trump and his party hold the Republican convention in Milwaukee. In both sets of remarks on Sunday, Mr. Biden made a plea that — if recent history is any guide — seemed unlikely to be heeded by activists on either side of the nation’s increasingly bitter divide.

Former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks during a rally in Doral, Florida, on July 9, 2024. Various Trump megadonors are also on the RNC lineup including venture capitalist David Sacks and investors Steve and Zach Witkoff. In total, the RNC will have over 80 speakers rallying support around Trump before the convention culminates in officially designating him the Republican presidential nominee. Notably missing from the RNC speaker list is former First Lady Melania Trump, as well as Trump's daughter and former White House advisor Ivanka Trump. Melania has so far been conspicuously absent from the Trump campaign trail, drawing mockery from President Joe Biden.

Trump Rejoices at How the Landscape Has Changed

A mini-motorcade of golf carts cruised down the palm tree-lined pathway. Mr. Trump had not been seen in days, and now there he was on Tuesday night, standing on a stage that had been erected near the golf course’s 10th hole. Oh, how much the landscape had changed, and in such a short time. The word “landslide” is now credibly being mentioned about Mr. Trump for the first time in his political career. Earlier on Tuesday, the nonpartisan election forecaster Cook Political Report slid six states in his direction.

Then, he added, in a clearly insincere display of sympathy toward Mr. Biden, “it’s a shame the way they’re treating him. After talking about his proposal to remove taxes on tips for hospitality workers, he urged Mr. Rubio to vote for it. Mr. Rubio had so far this year appeared infrequently on the campaign trail with Mr. Trump. Instead, Mr. Rubio used his time to echo Mr. Trump’s mocking of Mr. Biden’s debate performance and his frequent attacks that Mr. Biden was not mentally fit to lead the country. Richard Siu, 57, said he liked the idea of Mr. Rubio as Mr. Trump’s running mate.

After spending much of the last week out of public view while President Biden was besieged by Democratic doubts, former President Donald J. Trump reveled in Mr. Biden’s struggles and the Democrats’ infighting at a rally on Tuesday evening at his luxury golf resort in Doral, Fla.“Joe’s own party wants him to throw in the towel and surrender the presidency after a single 90-minute performance,” Mr. Trump said. Then, he added, in a clearly insincere display of sympathy toward Mr. Biden, “it’s a shame the way they’re treating him. But don’t feel sorry for him. He’s a very bad guy.”However, in a reflection of the mounting speculation by Democrats and political analysts about whether Mr. Biden will keep his place as his party’s presumptive nominee, Mr. Trump also spent a significant amount of time attacking Vice President Kamala Harris, considered to be Mr. Biden’s likeliest successor should he step aside.

The House Democrats who said Biden should drop out of the 2024 race were Reps. Adam Smith of Washington, Jerry Nadler of New York, Mark Takano of California and Joe Morelle of New York. Some House Democrats in battleground districts are weighing whether to distance themselves from Biden. "President Biden is a good man & I appreciate his lifetime of service," she wrote in a post to X. During the interview, Biden dismissed the calls for him to step aside and said only the "Lord Almighty" could get him to reconsider his presidential bid. "Look, I mean, if the Lord Almighty came down and said, 'Joe, get out of the race,' I'll get out of the race," Biden said during the interview.

According to major forecasts, it looks like it’s going to be an above-average hurricane season. An average Atlantic hurricane season has 14 named storms, including seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes. In 2020, the May forecast was for 13 to 19 named storms, but an updated forecast for August was even higher, with 19 to 25 named storms. This region, from West Africa to Central America, is hotter this year than it was before the start of last year’s hurricane season, which produced 20 named storms. The possibility of a La Niña, combined with record sea surface temperatures this hurricane season, is expected to create a robust environment this year for storms to form and intensify.

Rents have soared in recent years because of housing shortages across much of the country and a bout of severe inflation. But a growing number of rental properties, especially in the South and the Southwest, are in financial distress. In many parts of the country, rents are starting to fall. Interest rates, ratcheted higher by the Federal Reserve to combat inflation, have made mortgages much more expensive for building owners. These problems haven’t yet turned into a crisis, because most owners of apartment buildings, known in the real estate industry as multifamily properties, haven’t fallen behind on loan payments.

Hurricane Beryl, which devastated islands in Grenada on Tuesday and is now heading toward Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, has broken records as the earliest hurricane ever to reach Category 4 and Category 5 intensity in the Atlantic Basin. Wind speeds of at least 160 miles per hour were recorded on Monday. “There are so many superlatives to describe Hurricane Beryl given the time of year, the location and the strength,” said Jonathan Zawislak, a meteorologist and flight director for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Dr. Zawislak is a hurricane hunter, the title held by about 30 to 40 scientists, data crunchers and pilots based in Lakeland, Fla., who fly into hurricanes on three airplanes nicknamed Gonzo, Kermit and Miss Piggy. Both Kermit and Miss Piggy are equipped with Doppler radar on their bellies and tails that scientists use to create 3-D images of the storm.

The Youngest Pandemic Children Are Now in School, and StrugglingThe pandemic’s babies, toddlers and preschoolers are now school-age, and the impact on them is becoming increasingly clear: Many are showing signs of being academically and developmentally behind. But the impact on the youngest children is in some ways surprising: They were not in formal school when the pandemic began, and at an age when children spend a lot of time at home anyway. Researchers said several aspects of the pandemic affected young children — parental stress, less exposure to people, lower preschool attendance, more time on screens and less time playing. The youngest students’ performance is “in stark contrast” to older elementary school children, who have caught up much more, the researchers said. Sarrah Hovis, a preschool teacher in Roseville, Mich., has seen plenty of the pandemic’s impact in her classroom.

Opinion | The Causes of Jamaal Bowman’s Undoing

To the Editor:Re “A Progressive’s Loss Signals a Shift to the Center” (front page, June 27):Notwithstanding the penchant for handicapping that permeates the article, Jamaal Bowman’s landslide loss tells us nothing about the future of “the left” or the “Squad” (scare quotes). Not only did Mr. What the article does tell us, and it’s not rocket science, is that Democrats need to be running moderates in moderate districts and progressives in progressive districts if we want to take back the House. There’s plenty of time to argue after we replace the current clown show. Michael K. CantwellDelray Beach, Fla.To the Editor:You offer needlessly complex reasons for why and how Jamaal Bowman lost his seat in Congress, ranging from broad shifts in the electorate away from progressive ideologies to differences in organizational skill and campaign spending between groups like Justice Democrats and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC.

Verizon told some of its customers on social media that it was also aware of the issue and that its teams were working with local providers to resolve it. A T-Mobile representative said the carrier was one of “several providers impacted by a third-party vendor’s issue that is intermittently affecting some international roaming service” and was also working to resolve it. George Lagos, a 70-year-old real estate developer from Dunedin, Fla., who is visiting the Greek island of Crete with his family, noticed yesterday that his T-Mobile cellular data was not working. For about 24 hours, he said, he was not able to reach the people he had made plans with, though luckily, they had already gone over the details together. “You know it’s an inconvenience, but it wasn’t a disaster,” said Mr. Lagos, whose service appeared to be restored by Thursday evening.

He’s going to be a killer rebounder, monster screener and will consistently establish his position even against some of the stronger NBA players. I’m done doubting Edey, even as an NBA player. As an enormous ballhandler with serious touch and incredible vision as a passer, Topić is clearly an NBA player, even if it doesn’t all translate. Shannon is an elite athlete, but the NBA game requires more nuance, especially if he continues to be an inconsistent shooter. However, I also think he’s more than just a floor spacer on offense in spot-up situations and potentially as an off-ball scorer.

The federal judge overseeing former President Donald J. Trump’s classified documents case showed little patience on Tuesday with an argument by his lawyers that the F.B.I.’s search two years ago of Mar-a-Lago, his private club and residence in Florida, was conducted improperly. Cannon, has granted a serious audience to several far-fetched arguments by Mr. Trump’s lawyers. could search and what items it could seize. “It seems like it is,” Judge Cannon said, disagreeing with Mr. Trump’s lawyers about the question of specificity and all but ruling against them from the bench. “I have a hard time seeing what other language needed to be included.”

Sheriff Leeper said that Mr. Kang had never met the gamer he attacked in person, but that they knew each other from playing ArcheAge, a fantasy online game where players pursued their own adventures of exploration and conquest in a mythical world. The federal judge overseeing former President Donald J. Trump’s classified documents case posed tough questions on Monday to prosecutors who have asked her to bar him from making inflammatory statements that might endanger any F.B.I. At a contentious hearing in Federal District Court in Fort Pierce, Fla., the judge, Aileen M. Cannon, seemed disinclined to impose new conditions on Mr. Trump that would limit what he could say about the F.B.I. The court-authorized search was a crucial element of the government’s investigation, leading to the discovery of more than 100 classified documents that Mr. Trump kept after leaving office. The hearing was the latest clash between Mr. Trump’s lawyers and prosecutors in the office of the special counsel, Jack Smith. It centered on a knotty issue that has now cropped up in several of the former president’s legal cases: how to balance Mr. Trump’s right to attack the government — even falsely — against shielding the participants in the cases from threats of violence or harassment inspired by his incendiary remarks.

Male Kindergarten Teachers Are Here to Help. Many studies show that older boys benefit from having male teachers. There hasn’t been as much research on the youngest students and their teachers — in large part because there are so few male teachers in early education to begin with. Social-emotional learning has given them vocabulary to express their feelings, said Greg Smedley-Warren, 45, a kindergarten teacher in Nashville. “It’s like unlocking a new market of potential educators.”The male kindergarten teachers said that from their perspective, the fulfillment of the job generally outweighed the negatives.

The same could not be said for their sprawling entertainment businesses. The three men meet occasionally to discuss the state of the industry, and lively disagreements have a been a staple of their discussions. But by the time they met on the yacht, they had all agreed that the money-losing status quo in the streaming business was unsustainable. “There was peace in the valley for a period of time,” Mr. Malone mused in a rare recent interview, recalling the days before video-streaming upended the lucrative cable business. The city could see temperatures in the high 90s or above on Saturday. Credit... Hannah Beier for The New York TimesOn the first weekend of summer, a brutal heat wave now entering its sixth day will scorch large swaths of the country. The heat index in New York City is forecast to reach 96 degrees on Saturday and then 99 degrees on Sunday. Already, the city has recorded temperatures it hasn’t seen in almost two years, with Central Park hitting 94 degrees on Friday. Though the heat wave will not fade over the weekend, conditions are expected to cool slightly on Monday.

When Judge Aileen M. Cannon presides over a hearing on Friday in former President Donald J. Trump’s classified documents case, she will spend the day considering well-trod arguments about an arcane legal issue in an unorthodox manner. It will be the latest example of how her unusual handling of the case has now become business as usual. Over the past several months, Judge Cannon, who was appointed by Mr. Trump in his final days in office, has made a number of decisions that have prompted second-guessing and criticism among legal scholars following the case. Many of her rulings, on a wide array of topics, have been confounding to them, often evincing her willingness to grant a serious hearing to far-fetched issues that Mr. Trump’s lawyers have raised in his defense. The issue that will be discussed on Friday in Federal District Court in Fort Pierce, Fla., is a motion by the defense to dismiss the charges in the case on the grounds that Jack Smith, the special counsel who filed them last spring, was improperly funded and appointed.

The last full day of spring will feel more like deep summer across much of the eastern half of the country. Humidity will make the air feel even hotter, and nighttime temperatures are expected to remain uncommonly high. The springtime heat, which will linger through at least the weekend in part of the region, has already caught some cities off guard. Inland New England and upstate New York began to swelter this week even before cities closer to the coast. In Rochester, N.Y., the heat index — an indication of how the air feels, accounting for humidity — soared higher on Tuesday than in San Antonio or St. Petersburg, Fla.
