Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the U.S. especially among older individuals, according to the 2023 Sports & Fitness Industry Association Topline Participation Report. Like most sports, pickleball — which combines elements of tennis, ping-pong and badminton — is a great way to stay physically fit and tone your muscles. An ongoing study Apple is conducting published findings in October that analyzed over 250,000 pickleball and tennis workouts that were tracked via Apple Watch technology by study participants. Researchers concluded that playing pickleball was associated with helping players reach moderate to vigorous heart rate zones that have been linked to an improvement in heart health. However, pickleball's advantages exceed more than the commonly known perks of exercise like heart disease prevention and lower chances of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Pickleball injuries may cost Americans $377 million in health care costs this year, accounting for 5% to 10% of total unexpected medical costs, UBS analysts estimated in a report Monday. They estimate that up to $500 million of medical costs in 2023 will be attributable to pickleball. A UBS analyst note estimated pickleball, which has been likened to a combination of tennis and ping pong, would be responsible for $250 million to $500 million of medical costs in 2023. One reason for the high medical costs associated with pickleball is the sport's demographic. The Sports & Fitness Industry Association's report estimated there were 8.9 million pickleball players above the age of six in the US; the Association of Pickleball Professionals estimated in January that there were 36.5 million pickleball players in the US. The UBS analysis estimated there would be 22.3 million pickleball players in the US this year.

Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in America, with over 4.8 million people playing the game. By 2030, pickleball is projected to attract an estimated 40 million players across the globe, with even more investors jumping in looking to cash in on the craze. Pickleball has existed since 1965, but it wasn't until people were looking for a participatory sport during the pandemic that its popularity soared. And over the past five years, pickleball saw an average annual growth of 11.5%, while similar sports like badminton and pingpong saw negative growth of -3.7% and -1.2%, respectively. Professional leagues are competing for players, with Major League Pickleball, or MLP, which just launched last year, making headlines with investments in the seven-figure range from celebrity athletes like LeBron James and Tom Brady.

Yet dozens of new dedicated pickleball courts are being built all over America, which will soon help ease the problem of overcrowding. So for any tennis players out there worried that pickleball will demolish your own game’s success, you can rest easy.
