CNN —California is stripping the word “squaw” – a derogatory term for Indigenous women – from dozens of place names across 15 counties, state agencies recently announced. The updated place names are expected to go in effect by January 1, 2025. The upcoming changes are part of nationwide efforts to examine and replace derogatory terms on geographic features. The California Advisory Committee on Geographic Names approved renaming more than 30 locations, marking “a significant milestone for Native American women,” the California Natural Resources Agency (CNRA) said in a news release Friday. These place names should never insult communities or perpetuate discrimination,” Wade Crowfoot, the CNRA’s secretary, said in the release.

New York CNN —So far, the attacks that targeted Iran-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah members through their pagers have had devastating consequences. Justin Cappos, a cybersecurity professor at NYU, said that it’s possible to cause damage to a variety of batteries – most commonly lithium batteries, which have caused dangerous fires. If correct, this would suggest a very high penetration of Hezbollah’s supply chain for those devices,” Horowitz said over email. When it comes to battery safety, the National Fire Protection Association has a set of safety guidelines for lithium batteries, such as properly disposing of them. A Lebanese security source told CNN that Hezbollah had recently purchased the devices.

More specifically, they're taking aim at a widespread rule that requires almost every new apartment building in the US to include at least two separate stairwells. This part of local codes, they say, is an outdated safety measure that really just makes apartment units smaller, more expensive, and darker (yes, darker). City planners there sometimes call these single-stair buildings "Seattle Specials" — they simply wouldn't be possible in pretty much any other city. Almost all of Europe, as well as Asia, Mexico and South America, allows single-stair buildings of six stories or higher. Germany allows single-stair buildings to stretch to about 20 stories, while Switzerland has no such limit.

Multiple wildfires in Southern California have burned a combined 20,000 acres, forced more than 1,000 evacuations over the weekend and, according to the California Highway Patrol, briefly shut down Interstate 5 on Sunday night. The Lost Hills fire, in Kern County, had burned about 500 acres by Sunday night and was zero percent contained, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Several fires that broke out in Kern and San Luis Obispo counties on Saturday were blamed on critical weather conditions and dry lightning over the weekend, Kern County officials said in a statement. The National Weather Service’s Los Angeles bureau said on Saturday that the heat wave scorching the Western United States would increase the risk of fire, and that “any new fire will grow very quickly.”One fire started on Saturday in Tejon Ranch, a well-known, 270,000-acre private property in Kern County, and by Sunday night had burned about 9,950 acres and was 40 percent contained, officials said. The nature of illegal lockouts means they are hard to track directly. One of the responding officers calls a sergeant over, who says there's nothing else they can do. While only 14% of lockout calls led to a police report, 86% of calls about shoplifting did. As they walk over, one of the officers tells the other to look up "illegal lockout" on his phone. These private quasi-governments are called homeowner associations, or HOAs.
