Evacuation orders and an alarm sound were mistakenly sent to cellphones of residents all over Los Angeles County and beyond on Thursday afternoon. The text message warning was sent to millions of people around 4 p.m. local time, including in places far from where wildfires are burning out of control. “An EVACUATION WARNING has been issued in your area,” the text message read, in part. “My entire area just got an evacuation Amber alert, which turned out to be for West Hills, not Beverly Hills,” a user wrote on X. As if we’re not already anxiety-ridden enough.”“I got an evacuation warning phone alert in DTLA for a fire 20+ miles away,” another X user wrote.

During WWII, the Royal Navy attacked the fleet of its former ally to keep it from Nazi control. Though Netanyahu's history was faulty — it was the Royal Navy rather than the RAF that struck the French fleet — his analogy was revealing. The Kriegsmarine — the German Navy — was a fraction of the size of the Royal Navy, and thus too small to escort vulnerable troop transports. Vichy France would be allowed a meager army, and the French Navy would be confined to its home ports. This was no repeat of the Battle of Trafalgar, when the Royal Navy smashed a Franco-Spanish fleet off Spain in 1805.

Israel’s war Cabinet was Tuesday meeting to discuss a plan for a cease-fire with Lebanon’s Hezbollah as its military launched fresh airstrikes on southern Beirut. Hezbollah says it is supporting the Palestinian resistance; Israel sees it as another attempt by Tehran to attack the Jewish State. Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, said Monday his country’s security Cabinet would likely discuss the proposed truce when it met the following day. This was confirmed to NBC News by an Israeli source briefed on the matter. Lisa Johnson, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N., submitted the proposal last week to Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, an adviser to the speaker, Ali Hamdan, said.

CNN —A sculpture bought for just £5 ($6) and used as a doorstop could sell for more than £2.5 million ($3.2 million) after a Scottish court gave the green light for its sale. In 1998, the bust was found being used to keep open a shed door on an industrial park, according to the Highland Council. In a May report on the proposed sale, the Highland Council said a private overseas buyer had contacted auction house Sotheby’s and put forward an offer of more than £2.5 million. Following a public consultation earlier this year, members of a council committee recommended that the bust should be sold. By June, the wider council had agreed to the proposal, the spokeswoman told CNN.

Trump and the GOP have denied the tariffs would be inflationary, pointing to Trump’s success in imposing tariffs in his first term without reigniting inflation. Yet those tariffs, at $300 billion on selected Chinese goods, were much more targeted than the $3 trillion worth of blanket tariffs Trump is now expected to propose. And the inflationary environment is different now, too: During Trump’s first term, inflation only briefly ever climbed above 2%. It was Trump who appointed Powell to lead the Federal Reserve in his first term. But Trump has signaled a willingness this year to abandon the long-running principle of maintaining the Fed as an independent body.

Israel launched a ground incursion that risks repeating its past mistakes in Lebanon. From 1985 to 2000, Israel occupied a 15-mile-wide "security zone" in southern Lebanon, ostensibly run by a Lebanese Christian faction backed by IDF troops. Israel returned in 2006, when 30,000 Israeli troops crossed the border in retaliation for a Hezbollah ambush of IDF troops in northern Israel. AdvertisementAs Israel's prime minister in 1998, Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to keep troops in southern Lebanon "whatever the cost." Pontoon bridges are temporary structures that militaries often build to maintain critical supply lines when permanent structures are damaged or destroyed. NBC News was not able to verify whether the video shows the destruction of a pontoon bridge or when it was shot. Another video shared Thursday by the country’s air force chief, Lt. Gen. Mykola Oleshchuk, claimed to show Ukraine’s use of guided aerial bombs to destroy two “bridge crossings” in Kursk this week. Ukraine claimed responsibility for hitting the depot, which its army’s general staff said stored oil products used to supply the Russian army. “There’s a lot of mistrust going on there.”As fire behavior grows intense because of climate change and overgrown forests, doubts can fester in rural communities as fire managers operate more conservatively than in the past. “Now, we’re seeing fires act more radically, make their own weather and be more unpredictable.”This dynamic is playing out in rural communities elsewhere. Stasiewicz said that based on her own focus groups, surveys and interviews, sentiments like Courtney’s are becoming more common in rural communities. Evacuation often carries a stiff financial cost, she said, and some rural residents worry their properties won’t be prioritized. “We can sometimes see rural communities lose compared to more developed areas.
