A banana duct-taped to a white wall — or an acclaimed piece of art, depending how you look at it — sold at a Sotheby's auction for $6.24 million on Wednesday. The artwork debuted at Art Basel Miami Beach in December 2019 and was initially estimated to sell around $1.5 million, according to Sotheby's. At one point, someone even took the banana off the wall and ate it. According to Sotheby's, Cattelan "single-handedly prompted the world to reconsider how we define art, and the value we seek in it." London CNN —At Frieze London this year, three large artworks by the artist Nengi Omuku were hung away from the walls so viewers could walk around them. The other presented strips of sanyan, a thick traditional Nigerian fabric that Omuku uses to replace the usual canvas fabric painters often use as their base. “The fact I’m painting on a vintage surface gives soul to my work,” Omuku said over Zoom two days before the fair opens. Omuku's work is painted directly onto strips of sanyan, a thick traditional Nigerian fabric. “I’d never seen a pre-colonial Nigerian textile before, and it looked quite similar to linen.”The artist has exhibited in Paris, New York, Bangkok and London.

The latter was the first train car to offer on-board meals, including regional specialties like gumbo, which were prepared in a 3-foot-by-6 foot kitchen. By the 1870s, dining cars could be found on sleeper trains across North America. But this decentralized production model also contained the seed of dining car’s ultimate demise. And despite a revival of interest in train travel on the continent, dining cars (or certainly those equipped with kitchens) are now largely the preserve of tourist services.

London CNN —An art historian has identified a missing portrait of King Henry VIII after spotting it on social media. It showed a gathering at a reception in Warwick’s Shire Hall, where Warwickshire County Council is based. The distinctive frame was one of the features that helped identify the painting as the missing portrait of Henry VIII. His focus was on the background where, hanging on a wall, was what he suspected was a missing portrait of the Tudor monarch Henry VIII. In a telephone call with CNN, Busiakiewicz revealed that this was not the first discovery he had made thanks to social media.

The items repatriated from New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art arrived Wednesday and were displayed to journalists and VIPs on Thursday at the National Museum in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh. Fourteen rare Angkor era sculptures tied to a controversial art dealer and collector were returned to Cambodia from New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art earlier this week. Cambodia claims that other items illegally trafficked from the country are still at the Metropolitan Museum, as well as at other museums and in the hands of private collectors. Heng Sinith/APThe pieces returned to Cambodia from the Met were looted during a long period of civil war and instability in Cambodia, which was ruled by the brutal communist Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s. “At last, the Uma can be reunified to achieve its full magnificence as one complete statue,” it said.
