VATICAN CITY Associated Press —Pope Francis took the unusual decision Wednesday to expel 10 people – a bishop, priests and laypeople – from a troubled Catholic movement in Peru after a Vatican investigation uncovered “sadistic” abuses of power, authority and spirituality. It was announced by the Peruvian Bishops Conference, which posted a statement from the Vatican embassy on its website. The statement was astonishing because it listed abuses uncovered by the Vatican investigation that have rarely if ever been punished canonically — such as hacking someone’s communications — and cited the people the pope held responsible. Victims of Figari’s abuses complained to the Lima archdiocese in 2011, though other claims against him reportedly date to 2000. The investigation, published in 2017, found that Figari sodomized his recruits and forced them to fondle him and one another.

CNN —Like many victims of sexual abuse, it took years for Santiago to acknowledge that he was raped as a teenager. I come here to tell the truth because the authorities have not allowed me to speak,” Figari told reporters in Rome. At the age of 15, Figari told him he had great mental powers and offered to train him in ancient techniques, Santiago said. Years later, Santiago first reported his abuse to SCV members and filed a complaint against Figari at Lima’s Archdiocesan Tribunal in 2011. “I felt privileged, I felt listened to … (with) that phone call,” Santiago told CNN about when he first learned the Pope’s envoys wanted to meet him.

CNN —Vatican investigators looking into sexual abuse allegations at a Roman Catholic society in Peru have completed the first stage of their audit and will issue a report in the coming months, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni told CNN Friday. SCV said its members, who were summoned by the Vatican’s envoys, have “collaborated diligently” and reiterated its commitment to working with the Vatican. Peruvian prosecutors said in the case of sexual abuse, none of the alleged victims came forward and the crime fell under the statute of limitations. A criminal case against Figari and other SCV members, alleging kidnapping, serious psychological injuries, and illicit association to commit a crime, is still ongoing. SCV said in 2017 Figari had been removed from the community, banned from contacting members, and prohibited by Vatican authorities from returning to Peru.

An image of a French news report about hot weather in Corsica is being falsely touted online as evidence of the media exaggerating high temperatures in France. The image is a cropped still from a broadcast weather report on CNEWS, a French-language news channel. “Same temperature manipulation in France relating to Corsica,” said one social media user sharing the image on messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Reuters traced the image to a weather report broadcast on CNEWS on July 18 (here). The visuals were filmed on July 17 and were used to illustrate a broadcast on July 18 about temperatures forecast for later that day.
