California health officials on Tuesday reported a possible case of bird flu in a child with mild symptoms. A bird flu test on the child four days after the positive result came back negative. Bird flu has been spreading rampantly in poultry since 2022 in the worst such outbreak the U.S. has ever experienced. California represents the largest share of human bird flu cases in the U.S. so far, with 27 confirmed, not counting the child in Alameda County. In Canada, health officials reported the country's first human case of bird flu last week, in a teenager hospitalized and in critical condition.

AdvertisementMen far outnumber women as news influencers on social media, per a new Pew Research Center study. That gender skew is showing up again in the latest platform for news: social media. That gender gap stands out for a few reasons:First, there's a much narrower gender divide (51% male and 46% female) among working US journalists, per a 2022 Pew survey. In Pew's analysis, there was a much smaller (and flipped) gender gap in the overall audience for news content on social media among young people. YouTube had the biggest gender gap, while TikTok's was minimalThe gender divide among news influencers was fairly consistent across all platforms in Pew's study.

CNN —Dozens of people detained during protests over Venezuela’s disputed presidential election have been released, according to the local rights group Foro Penal. Video footage from outside one of the prisons shows some of those released hugging loved ones surrounded by cheering crowds. Human Rights Watch has said there are “credible” reports of 24 people being killed during the crackdown on the protests. Jesús Manuel Martínez Medina, a member of the opposition party Vente Venezuela, was detained on August 2 and had been in hospital since October 11. But tens of thousands of tallies published by the opposition suggested a win for opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez.

This week, researchers shared fascinating new findings on Uranus, the seventh planet from the sun, and the far side of the moon. Other worldsIllustrations depict how Uranus' magnetosphere, or protective bubble, was behaving before Voyager 2's arrival (left) and during the spacecraft's flyby (right). An unusual cosmic occurrence during the Voyager 2 spacecraft’s 1986 flyby might have skewed how scientists characterized the ice giant, new research suggests. In particular, the spacecraft’s observations of Uranus’ protective magnetosphere were wildly different from astronomers’ expectations. Fortunately, sending a dedicated mission to study Uranus in the future is a priority for NASA, according to a 2022 report.

After Republican President-elect Donald Trump’s dramatic performance with Latino voters, a coalition of Democratic-leaning Latino groups is grappling with the shift and trying to reconcile it with the policies they say many Hispanics support. Along with UnidosUS, Latino-focused advocacy groups such as Voto Latino, Somos Votantes, Hispanic Federation and La Brega y Fuerza Fund sponsored a poll of Latino voters. The coalition rejected national exit poll findings showing that Trump won the majority of Latino men — 55% — to Harris’ 43%. Edison Research, which conducts national exit polling for NBC News and other news organizations, surveyed 2,750 Latino voters nationally. Thirty-seven percent of male participants in exit polling identified as white, while 6% identified as Latino in the Latino groups’ poll.

A firebrand legal adviser to the President-elect and a conservative lawyer under consideration for the post of Attorney General appear to be setting the stage for investigations and prosecution of Donald Trump’s legal adversaries, including Special Counsel Jack Smith and New York Attorney General Letitia James. The threats come as Trump campaign aides say that the president-elect considers his choice for attorney general to be his most important single appointment. Paoletta is among several people under consideration to run the Justice Department, people familiar with the matter tell NBC News. All of those people have claimed—without citing any specific evidence— that the federal prosecutions of Trump by Smith were politically motivated. New York CNN —Striking workers at embattled plane maker Boeing voted Monday to accept the company’s most recent offer, ending the costliest strike in the United States in more than 25 years. The International Association of Machinists (IAM) said rank-and-file members voted by 59% to approve the deal. But the deal did not restore the traditional pension plan they lost in 2014 from their previous labor deal. But despite the deep financial problems, Boeing had little choice but to settle the strike and get the workers back on the job. Boeing’s economic impactDespite its problems, Boeing is still a major contributor to the US economy, as it is the largest American exporter.

New York CNN —Denny’s is closing 150 restaurants over the next year, and the 71-year-old diner chain is mulling a major change to its 24/7 operating hours. A specific list of closing restaurants weren’t immediately announced. Denny’s is targeting “underperforming restaurants” that are weighing down the company’s financial performance, according to Steve Dunn, Denny’s executive vice president and chief global development officer. Since the pandemic, about a quarter of its restaurants have not returned to those around-the-clock hours, so Denny’s is easing up on the requirement for a franchise to do so. Denny’s joins a broader trend of restaurants slashing hours since the pandemic.
