Economists broadly dislike tariffs, saying they tend to increase prices for consumers — a likelihood that many company executives are already warning of. The new slate of tariffs Trump calls for would be much steeper and more far-reaching if fully implemented. “In his first term, President Trump instituted tariffs against China that created jobs, spurred investment and resulted in no inflation,” Trump transition spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. Angie Chua, founder of Bobo Design Studio, is considering adding a line item to show customers how tariffs affect her prices. CNN —In a world where the climate is increasingly hot and volatile, farmers are having trouble keeping their crops cool. A startup founded in the desert of Saudi Arabia thinks it might have a solution. Heat peaks can desiccate crops, killing them outright if unmitigated, or stressing crops, leaving them more vulnerable to pests and disease. Harvey Weinstein’s lawyers filed a legal claim Tuesday against New York City, alleging the disgraced Hollywood mogul is receiving poor medical care and living in an unhygienic environment at the Rikers Island jail complex. He was hospitalized in April and July, and he had emergency heart surgery in September, according to a representative. The New York City mayor’s office, the city’s Department of Correction and the city’s public hospital system did not immediately respond to requests for comment. “The treatment, or lack thereof, that Mr. Weinstein is receiving on Rikers Island does not only amount to medical negligence, it amounts to cruel and unusual punishment in violation of the Eighth Amendment,” Ansari added in part. President-elect Donald Trump said he intends to nominate Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, a Stanford University professor known for his criticism of Covid lockdowns, to serve as the next director of the National Institutes of Health. In a statement Tuesday, Trump said, "Dr. Bhattacharya will work in cooperation with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to direct the Nation's Medical Research, and to make important discoveries that will improve Health and save lives." Bhattacharya gained national attention in October 2020, when he co-wrote the "Great Barrington Declaration," an open letter calling on public health officials to roll back Covid lockdowns. Several days after the Great Barrington Declaration came out, 80 researchers from the fields of public health, epidemiology and more published a joint letter in the medical journal The Lancet, calling the idea "a dangerous fallacy." Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director general of the World Health Organization, called the proposal unethical.

Emma Corrin first encountered Maggie Nelson’s work three summers ago, when the actor was in Brighton, England, filming 2022’s “My Policeman,” a British drama about postwar sexual repression. At the time, Corrin, now 28, was grappling with their gender identity, and a friend recommended “The Argonauts” (2015), Nelson’s memoir about queer desire and making a family with her partner, the artist Harry Dodge. For Corrin, who recently wrote a screenplay with a friend, Nelson’s work remains a touchstone. Earlier this year, Corrin saw the playwright Margaret Perry’s adaptation of “Bluets,” starring Emma D’Arcy, Kayla Meikle and Ben Whishaw, in London. It was the first time that Nelson’s work had been performed onstage.

London-based hedge fund Granular Capital has revealed a renewed interest Borr Drilling , saying the offshore drilling company's shares could increase by up to 300% or 400%. The hedge fund's thesis centers on Borr's fleet of 24 modern jack-up rigs – specialized vessels used to maintain oil and gas production in shallow waters. Additionally, about one-third of the global jack-up fleet is approaching or has exceeded retirement age, suggesting a likely decrease in available equipment going forward. Singapore, which previously constructed 50% of global jackup rigs, has largely converted its manufacturing capacity to other uses. This week, Seatrium signed an agreement with India's Cochin Shipyard to build jack-up rigs, potentially at a lower cost in the future.

Jim Cramer warns of market 'excess' as stocks surge
  + stars: | 2024-11-25 | by ( Julie Coleman | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
CNBC's Jim Cramer on Monday described signs of "excess" he sees across market sectors, saying these widespread dramatic gains make him somewhat apprehensive, warning investors not to get too greedy. "If you had the good fortune to participate in some of these seemingly excessive moves, I think you should give thanks to your gains," he said. While it's normal for the averages to rise following election day's "Republican sweep" — as Wall Street expects deregulation and lower taxes — Cramer pointed out that many roaring stocks aren't well-known or members of the Magnificent Seven. He also looked at "Trump trades," or stocks that Wall Street has embraced as they anticipate what President-elect Donald Trump's term, like private prison operators and oil service companies. "So, take what's been given to you, give thanks for your gains, and make sure you're not letting wins turn into losses."

When José Pérez Gómez came from Mexico more than 25 years ago, he scraped together money by selling handmade furniture on the streets of Fresno, Calif. Eventually, he turned that hustle into a full-fledged brick-and-mortar business, which allowed him to raise a family and send two daughters to college. Democrats had assumed that Mr. Trump’s threat of mass deportations and harsh words toward migrants would sour Latino voters across the country, especially those with family or friends who were undocumented. But for Mr. Pérez Gómez, personal economic struggles took precedence. Furthermore, he said, many immigrants in California’s Central Valley actually agreed with Mr. Trump that Democrats had allowed too many people to cross the border with the lure of asylum protections.
