CNN —The United States’ first known case of a more severe strain of mpox was confirmed in California, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Saturday. The person diagnosed with clade I mpox had recently traveled from Eastern Africa, where an mpox outbreak is ongoing. Clade II mpox has been circulating in the United States since a large outbreak in 2022 and 2023. A more recent outbreak in Africa is driven by clade I, which is known to cause more severe disease. Kamberlyn Bowler, 15, said she ate McDonald's Quarter Pounders in the days before she became ill.At least 75 people have been infected with E. coli in an outbreak that McDonald's has said is likely linked to slivered onions served on Quarter Pounders. The previously healthy, active 15-year-old is now hospitalized and battling kidney failure — a rare and potentially life-threatening complication of E. coli poisoning. Kamberlyn, of Grand Junction, Colorado, is one of dozens of people who say they became sick after having eaten McDonald’s Quarter Pounders. McDonald’s says the most likely source of the contamination was slivered onions served on its Quarter Pounders. On Oct. 18, she was airlifted to Children’s Hospital Colorado outside Denver, where she has remained ever since.

My 15-year-old daughter, Kamberlyn, ate the same meal at McDonald's, a Quarter Pounder with cheese and extra pickles, on September 25 and September 27. Ten days later, we were transferred to the nearest children's hospital for her to receive dialysis treatment for a life-threatening complication of E. coli. Kamberlyn told me she felt a bit better after receiving fluids from the hospital. The Food and Drug Administration has identified the onions on McDonald's Quarter Pounders as a possible source of this outbreak.
