Some warehousing operations as well as distribution, logistics and refrigeration businesses no longer fit into Femsa's strategy and may be sold, Fonseca said. Femsa's shares have surged more than 40% this year after shedding 4.8% in 2022. Femsa, which last year acquired Swiss kiosk operator Valora for $1.15 billion, plans to concentrate on its retail, bottling and financial technology (fintech) operations. Femsa is capitalizing on the ubiquity of its Oxxo stores by promoting fintech services in them, such as digital accounts and debit cards, Fonseca said. Femsa's scale has allowed it to automate some processes, and it is looking for ways to cut energy costs, he said.

MEXICO CITY, April 28 (Reuters) - Mexico's FESMA , which controls one of the largest Coca-Cola bottlers and a string of convenience store chains, posted a 22% jump in its first-quarter revenue Friday to 180 billion pesos, driven by strong sales in its key businesses. Sales in the region were seen "widely outpacing the industry," Group CEO Daniel Rodriguez said in a statement. The company's fintech arm, Spin by Oxxo, saw growth of 1.1 million new users in the quarter, taking its total user base to 6.4 million, while total monthly transactions were up 22%. The company's subsidiary, Coca-Cola FEMSA, meanwhile reported a 35% bump in quarterly net income earlier this week following strong growth in Mexico, Brazil, Guatemala and Uruguay. Bill Gates bought a $902 million stake in Dutch brewery Heineken's parent company. The billionaire bought a $392 million stake in one of Mexico's largest brewers, Femsa, in 2007. He bought 6.65 million shares of the beer company directly, per the filing, and another 4.18 million shares through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Trust. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. Long before his Reddit post and the health study, Gates bought a $392 million stake in one of Mexico's largest brewers, Femsa, in 2007.

Justin Tallis//Pool via REUTERSAMSTERDAM, Feb 22 (Reuters) - Bill Gates has bought 3.76% stake in Dutch drinks giant Heineken Holding NV (HEIO.AS), although the billionaire founder of Microsoft has previously said he was "not a big beer drinker." Heineken Holding owns a controlling stake in brewer Heineken NV (HEIN.AS). A separate filing also dated Feb. 17 showed FEMSA sold all 18 million shares it held in Heineken Holding. Gates purchased 10.8 million shares, worth 883 million euros ($939.87 million) at current market prices, triggering a disclosure requirement under Dutch stock market rules.
Heineken, as well as an investment vehicle controlled by the Heineken family, are expected to participate in the offering, FEMSA added in a filing to Mexico's main stock exchange. Heineken has committed to repurchasing around a billion euros worth of its shares, both Heineken and FEMSA said Thursday. FEMSA, which saw its own share prices rise near 9% around midday Thursday, had announced plans to divest its stake in the world's second-largest brewer the day before. It has previously reported a 14.8% combined stake in the Heineken Group, in which the Heineken family holds just over 50%. The final prices in the share and notes offering will be determined and announced Friday, FEMSA said.
Mexican telecommunications giant America Movil (AMXL.MX) kicked off the trend late last year when its shareholders approved the spinoff of its cell tower business. Some analysts said both Alfa and Televisa may consider further spinoffs as they look to boost their depressed valuations. Other companies, like Coke bottler and retailer Femsa (FEMSAUBD.MX), whose shares are down 3.3% year-to-date, after gaining 6% in 2021, may follow suit. Alfa lost 2.69% the day after its shareholders approved the Axtel spinoff, while Televisa's shares advanced 0.86% the day after it revealed plans for a similar move. Televisa, meanwhile, could follow its sports spinoff with either its editorial or magazine businesses, two analysts said.
MEXICO CITY, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Mexico's FEMSA (FEMSAUBD.MX) has signed an agreement to purchase financial services company NetPay as the retailer and Coke bottler expands its digital payments portfolio into business-to-business transactions, the company said on Monday. "This acquisition will allow us to extend our value proposition to micro, small and medium-sized companies," Digital@FEMSA Chief Executive Jose Antonio Fernandez said in a statement to Mexico's main stock exchange. FEMSA had purchased a minority stake in NetPay in 2019, it added, and hopes to complete the full purchase by the first quarter of 2023. This has already led to a manufacturing surge in Mexico and represents "a lifetime opportunity" to invest in Latin America's second-largest economy, according to Bank of America. "Nearshoring represents Mexico's best growth opportunity for the next 10 years and it is already occurring," Bank of America's Capistran said. The EWW is up 1.9% in 2022, easily outperforming the S & P 500. All five of those stocks are outperforming the S & P 500 this year, with FirstCash jumping nearly 30% and Sanmina popping 38%. PriceSmart and Ingredion are down 6.4% and 8.2%, respectively, in 2022, but that's still better than the S & P 500's 19% drop for the year.
FEMSA entered the European market earlier this month when it bought Swiss kiosk operator Valora, which it plans to expand with new stores and affiliating independent stores in Germany, Chief Corporate Officer Francisco Camacho told analysts. "We do not expect this to be altogether a major strain on the FEMSA funding structure," Camacho said, adding that if necessary FEMSA would fund the expansion from the firm's other operations. FEMSA is not planning to expand to other geographies for the time being, Camacho said. Executives said FEMSA would also push a business-to-business service through its financial technology arm, though they did not say how much they would invest into it, nor whether it would operate under the same name as its consumer fintech service, Spin by Oxxo. FEMSA ruled out seeking a banking license for the service for the time being, though Carrion said it was seeking permits to allow larger deposits and direct deposit payments from employers.
Quarterly revenue rose 20.5% year-on-year to 171.66 billion pesos ($8.66 billion), driven by increased sales across markets and beating the Refinitiv consensus of 163.17 billion pesos. Operating costs rose in almost all of Femsa's divisions, including a 69.4% jump in its logistics and distribution business on increased transportation and labor costs. Earnings from companies in which Femsa has controlling stakes, including Dutch beer maker Heineken (HEIN.AS), also took a hit in the quarter, Femsa said. Femsa's core earnings, or EBITDA, for the quarter rose 14.4% to 23.20 billion pesos. Revenue at Grupo Nos, Femsa's convenience store joint venture with Brazilian energy firm Raizen (RAIZ4.SA), surged 156% from the year-ago quarter.
Corporate earnings have actually been, to quote "Curb Your Enthusiasm's" Larry David, pretty, pretty good. The Dow was up more than 300 points, or 1%, while the S&P 500 gained 0.6%. what used to be dubbed FAANG stocks before name and ticker changes) make up a big chunk of the weighting of the S&P 500. Nearly three-quarters of the S&P 500 companies that have reported earnings so far have topped forecasts. So the weaker earnings are more a function of higher costs as opposed to a significant slowdown in sales.
REUTERS/Daniel Becerril/MEXICO CITY, Oct 20 (Reuters) - Spin by Oxxo, the financial technology initiative launched by Mexican bottler and retailer Femsa, is set to reach 10 million users by 2023, up from four million currently, Spin's Director General Asensio Carrion told Reuters. Spin by Oxxo, which has been financed with internal funds, has quickly become a major player in Mexican fintech. For comparison, Latin America's largest fintech Nubank has about 2.1 million customers in the country, while local player Stori aims to hit the two million client mark by 2023. Mexico's Grupo Financiero Banorte, in its second-quarter results, said it had 6.7 million digital clients. The company has more than 20,600 Oxxo stores across Latin America, and has plans to increase the number by 50% over the next decade.
