How hustle icon Gary Vee found his inner Ted Lasso
  + stars: | 2024-12-06 | by ( Lucia Moses | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +11 min
AdvertisementVaynerchuk, also known as Gary Vee, has built a legion of fans, many of whom are young men, by evangelizing hard work. His schtick lands with a generation that's grown up with — and is now exhausted by — social media, which encourages constant comparisons with others. Advertisement"In the beginning, it was, 'That's dumb, that's dumb,'" Jon Halvorson, SVP of Mondelez and a longtime client, said of Vaynerchuk's rhetoric. CMOs no longer have to be convinced to embrace social media, and many have even bypassed agencies like VaynerX altogether to take that work in-house. Naysayers say his personal brand is still bigger than his company; Vaynerchuk has 22 times as many followers on X as VaynerMedia.

Athvisions | E+ | Getty ImagesGlobal food prices recently rose to an 18-month high, with some food baskets expected to continue climbing, according to market watchers. In October, world food commodity prices were at their highest since April 2023, according to the most recent data compiled by the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization. The FAO Food Price Index, which monitors the prices of five food baskets: grains, meat, dairy, vegetable oils and sugar, rose by 2% in October, driven primarily by a surge in vegetable oil prices. The index measures raw commodity prices rather than retail costs, but the increase suggests that higher food prices may continue to affect consumers. While coffee and cocoa prices are not reflected in the FAO index, prices of the two commodities face the "most risk," said Biggin.

It marked the Commodores’ first-ever win over an AP top-five team and just the fourth time Alabama has lost as a No. — Joe RexrodeAlabama isn’t in as much CFP trouble as it may seemThe CFP margin for error has shrunk, of course, for an Alabama team that still has challenging road games against Tennessee, LSU and Oklahoma ahead. Despite a near-even margin in total yards (Vanderbilt 186, Alabama 159), the Commodores controlled the game by converting third downs — 7-of-10 in the first half. Williams’ magic isn’t enoughWhen Alabama needed a big play it called on its 17-year-old phenom Ryan Williams — and he delivered. Then, faced with a fourth-and-goal and trailing 40-28, Williams’ 2-yard touchdown run put Alabama back within one possession.

In many ways, F1 Academy is a spiritual successor to W Series, an all-female racing series that shuttered in 2022 because of financial problems. Where F1 Academy differs is that it has the financial backing of Formula 1 and buy-in from the sport's constructors, with each team sponsoring F1 Academy drivers. "F1 Academy is a really friendly environment and a bit different to when I've been in male paddocks with mixed competition. She previously competed in W Series and has enjoyed her time so far with F1 Academy, which she describes as a "streamlined" series. Most importantly, though, she's grateful for the amount of testing and practice time that F1 Academy provides.

Hedge fund industry insiders are abuzz right now about "portable alpha," a blast-from-the-past strategy that's undergoing a revival. According to the Morgan Stanley white paper, it can take on a variety of forms, including "dedicated portable alpha funds, portable alpha share classes, portable alpha feeder funds and other solutions." And now it wants Microsoft and the cybersecurity firm that caused the problem to compensate it for at least some of its losses. Delta has hired high-profile attorney David Boies’ law firm to seek damages from cyber security firm CrowdStrike and Microsoft for the massive service issues it suffered last week following a badly flawed software update caused problems in a key computer program. The hiring of the firm of Boies Schiller Flexner, first reported by CNBC, was confirmed to CNN by a person familiar with the decision. Delta’s costs could total between $325 million to $475 million, according to a note published Tuesday by Savanthi Syth, airline analyst for Raymond James. But the business experience in the retail health clinic space has largely disappointed. Walmart and the problem of volume vs. priceIn 2019, Walmart announced a bold initiative to open 4,000 in-store health clinics by 2029. "Primary health care is a low margin business," said Arielle Trzcinski, a principal analyst covering health care at research firm. "Compared to what they see in traditional retail, health care is a fundamentally different business," Trzcinski said, citing the challenges of navigating insurance companies and administrative burdens that health care brings. In-store health clinics can be profitable and viable, and retailers are experimenting with piecemeal approaches tailored to the local market.

What putting up a bird feeder can lead to
  + stars: | 2024-04-09 | by ( Aj Willingham | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
Blame the bird feeders — all three of them (plus a bird bath and a hummingbird feeder, of course). It’s hard to describe what happens, but it comes upon you like a cascade of feathered dopamine: You get a bird feeder. Then, the birds start to come to your bird feeder! While you can certainly outfit your bird community with top-of-the-line accoutrement, it’s not that expensive — and just as satisfying — to just have a single feeder. Even the most humble sparrow or house wren has its own little personality, its own little dramas and peculiarities.

Without ever clicking a mouse or touching a screen, Mark selected this command on his computer simply using signals from his brain. “I figured I had two choices: I could wallow in self-pity, or I could pick myself up by the bootstraps and do what I could to help,” Mark said. Synchron’s brain implant, the one Mark has, is called a Stentrode and consists of a stent with electrode sensors that can detect electrical brain activity. That external transmitter sits right above the internal transmitter and carries the signal from Mark’s brain to the computer almost instantaneously. Private-asset binge exposes insurance to new risks

The concept is not new: Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRKa.N) has used its insurance premiums to help fund everything from railways to cowboy-boot makers. The prospect of insurance companies buying risky loans or private equity investments has raised eyebrows. Many private credit assets, for example, rely on so-called private letter ratings based on confidential data. Given the private nature of private credit, it’s hard to see from the outside how big these risks are, or where they lurk. Besides, even if the share of life insurance assets that are mis-rated or undercapitalized is tiny, smaller insurers could carry more concentrated risk.

Mandating a financial penalty if a contract is broken, as in Vidal’s case, has a long history in contract law, but it is relatively new in employment contracts. A typical stay-or-pay clause is called a training-repayment-agreement provision (TRAP), which stipulates that the cost of on-the-job training will be borne by the employee. Nevertheless, Harris says, it’s hard to know how many workers are subject to these contracts, because employment contracts are often private. She had to wait tables for a while but eventually got an offer with Ameriflight, a Texas-based cargo carrier. and FedEx have routes around the country, they still rely on smaller carriers to fly the connecting routes from, say, Lansing to Detroit.

She also landed clerkships with two federal judges — Judge Corey Maze, a federal district judge in Alabama, and Judge William Pryor, an influential appellate judge. After finishing law school, Clanton clerked for Maze, a federal judge in Anniston, Alabama from 2022 to 2023.
