Los Angeles CNN —Los Angeles officials on Tuesday moved to cement the city and its schools as sanctuaries for immigrants and LGBTQ youth as the city positions itself to push back strongly against President-elect Donald Trump’s platforms on immigration and gender. The Los Angeles City Council, which represents the second-largest US city, unanimously voted to adopt a “sanctuary city” ordinance that prohibits city resources from being used in immigration enforcement or to cooperate with federal immigration agents, unless required by state law. LGBTQ advocates also fear his presidency will result in wider restrictions on transgender people and rollbacks of protections for other LGBTQ groups. Los Angeles City Council members listen as a man speaks in support of a proposed "sanctuary city" ordinance at City Hall on Tuesday. Teachers and administrators will receive training on how to respond to federal immigration personnel who request information about students and families or who are trying to enter school property.

Here are some of the things Trump has pledged and how or whether they could become reality:Abolishing the Department of EducationPledge: Trump has repeatedly said he will close the federal Department of Education, sending authority over education back to the states and saving taxpayer dollars. Trump has distanced himself from the policy paper, but a CNN review found that at least 140 people who worked in the first Trump administration were involved. How it could be done: It’s not clear how the Trump administration could achieve these goals. But the new Trump administration could set certain requirements that schools must meet to receive federal funding. The Trump administration could decide to rescind the repayment plan, which was created by a regulatory process.

We will ultimately eliminate the federal Department of Education,” he said earlier this month during a rally in Wisconsin. Previously, federal education programs were housed in other agencies. Ending the department may not eliminate federal education fundingFederal funding programs for K-12 schools that help support the education of students from low-income families and children with disabilities predated the creation of the Department of Education. Calls to abolish the Department of Education or merge it with another federal agency are not new. When Trump was president, his administration proposed merging the Education and Labor departments into one federal agency.

Three former students have filed suit, saying a SoCal school district failed to protect them from "rampant" sexual abuse. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe 2024 presidential election is quickly approaching — and there's a lot on the line for student-loan borrowers. While most federal borrowers were not required to make any payments for nearly three years of President Joe Biden's first term, they were also hopeful for broad debt relief. Now the Education Department is in the process of crafting a new plan under a different law. Here's what Republican presidential candidates are saying about the Education Department — and how it could impact millions of student-loan borrowers. And while private banks administer non-federal loans, borrowers with private debt often face higher interest rates without the option for federal relief.

Students were regularly subjected to sexual harassment by Hall, two former students told me. “I feel like so many of us were victims to the culture,” one former Rosemead student told Insider. Manipulation by a trusted adult has been passed like a virus to generations of Rosemead students. We wondered aloud whether Masiello had harassed our mother the same way he'd done to generations of Rosemead students.

Biden, who returned on Saturday from a week-long vacation, will mark the time of year when U.S. parents send children back to school with his own trip to Washington's Eliot-Hine Middle School. The Biden administration has pushed Congress to hike funding for public schools, including those that hire mental health professionals, through a bipartisan gun safety law last year. Public education is largely funded and run locally in the United States and typically takes a back seat in the presidential campaign to jobs and prices at the gas pump. The largest U.S. labor union, the National Education Association, a group of public school teachers numbering 3 million, endorsed him just a day after he announced his re-election bid. Republicans are closely tied to efforts to steer more public education funding to parochial institutions and independently run charter schools.

Apparently Education Secretary Miguel Cardona thinks it’s something other than improving educational results. New national test results this week showed eighth-grade U.S. history scores at an all-time low, and Mr. Cardona’s response was to attack the GOP. Scores dropped the most among the lower performers. The civics results are similarly depressing.
“I think this situation is a perfect example of why schools have Title IX obligations,” said Chloe Neely, the lawyer representing Riley in her Title IX complaint. Riley’s Title IX complaint accuses Cherokee County Schools, which has about 2,900 students, of not properly training school staff on how to respond to a complaint of harassment. “There usually aren’t any accountability measures in place to ensure compliance with Title IX,” said Meyer, who was not referring specifically to Cherokee County. The proposed Title IX changes are currently going through a federal review process and could be finalized later this year. Cherokee County Schools only opened its own investigation in early 2022, after Marcella filed the Title IX complaint and more than three months after the alleged assault.
At a time of increased scrutiny about the pay gap between male and female athletes, the Nike deals show that female collegiate and amateur athletes are emerging as winners in the early days of the NIL era. "I think most people knew that women athletes in particular were going to see great opportunities," Rishe said. "That's why it's exciting to see, but not surprising to see a lot of female college athletes solidify various and sometimes lucrative NIL deals." Women's social media presence influences dealsClark ranks as the tenth most profitable college women's basketball player and Jones comes in twelfth, according to On3's "College Women's Basketball NIL Rankings." Female athletes already are doing their part in spreading the message about the future of women in sports and as public figures.
