Yields and prices move in opposite directions. One basis point is equivalent to 0.01%. The 10-year Treasury yield was up just over a basis point at 3.745% at 3:41 a.m. U.S. Treasury yields were slightly higher early Monday as investors assessed the growth outlook following the Federal Reserve's jumbo rate cut last week. The 10-year Treasury yield ended last week almost 8 basis points higher after the Fed lowered rates by half a percentage point on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, the Federal Open Market Committee announced an interest-rate cut of 50 basis points, the first cut Americans have received in over four years. Trump sought to use his presidential power to appoint members to the Fed board who supported his unorthodox views of the central bank. Trump has flip-flopped his views on his most important appointment to the Fed: Powell. Trump's tepid support of Powell underlines just how mercurial he can be when it comes to the central bank.

Traders work on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., November 17, 2023. Benchmark Treasury yields fell back more than 10 basis points to 4.37% after a total of $109 billion of 2 and 5-year notes hit the Street on Monday without much disruption. Another weak U.S. housing readout, with sub-forecast new home sales last month, perhaps flattered the post-auction moves. That's likely a mixed blessing for Federal Reserve watchers - the continued buoyancy of consumption but with increasing price discrimination. Fed futures priced about 85bps of rate cuts through next year, starting in June, though many major banks expect even more.

Word "Oil" and stock graph are seen through magnifier displayed in this illustration taken September 4, 2022. That drop, which takes annual producer price inflation as low as 1.3%, was driven largely by falling gasoline prices. And that meets news that China's oil refinery throughput fell back in October as industrial fuel demand weakened. The overall energy and inflation picture is helping buoy consumption and stokes the 'soft landing' narrative investors are betting on. The picture in overseas markets, where the economic picture is cloudier, was more mixed.

The scheduled Fed board meeting will mark the first time in over a decade that the central bank has proposed revising the fees, which generated around $24.31 billion for lenders in 2019, the most recent Fed data shows. The Fed has not said how it plans to change the fees, which have long been criticized by retailers as disproportionately high, and a spokesman for the central bank declined to comment. The Wall Street Journal reported last week that the Fed will lower the caps, sending shares in credit card companies Visa V.N and Mastercard MA.N lower. In 2011 the central bank capped them at 21 cents per transaction, plus 0.05% of the transaction cost. Analysts said that it is likely the Fed could face a legal challenge from either industry if it pursues new caps.

Top real estate and banking officials are calling on the Federal Reserve to stop raising interest rates as the industry suffers through surging housing costs and a "historic shortage" of available homes for sale. The National Association of Home Builders, the Mortgage Bankers Association and the National Association of Realtors said they wrote the letter "to convey profound concern sharedamong our collective memberships that ongoing market uncertainty about the Fed's rate path is contributing to recent interest rate hikes and volatility." The groups ask the Fed not to "contemplate further rate hikes" and not to actively sell its holdings of mortgage securities at least until the housing market has stabilized. "We urge the Fed to take these simple steps to ensure that this sector does not precipitate the hard landing the Fed has tried so hard to avoid," the group said. The letter comes as the Fed is weighing how it should proceed with monetary policy after raising its key borrowing rate 11 times since March 2022.

Neither Jeff Schmid, Kansas City Fed's president since August and a voter in 2025, nor Adriana Kugler, a permanent voter who was confirmed to the Fed Board in September, have yet made any substantive policy remarks. And the gap between those two gauges, which had halved from July peaks, is starting to yawn wider yet again. Although the steep annual drop in Chinese exports and imports last month was marginally better than forecast, the ongoing funk in activity remains stark and threatens Beijing's overall economic growth target of about 5%. The San Francisco Fed declined to share additional details with CNN about Abbasi’s departure. Republicans and Democrats in Congress have pledged tighter oversight of banking regulators following the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank. Some in Congress are concerned that the Federal Reserve's current inspector general is not independent enough to serve as a check on the central bank.
