Iran recently transferred Fath-360 close-range ballistic missiles to Russia, weapons that can blast fortified positions or cities near the frontlines and which could strain Ukraine's air defenses. An Israeli soldier examines part of an Iranian ballistic missile fired at Israel during Iran's direct attack in April. Russia already acquired KN-23 ballistic missiles from North Korea. Consequently, while these close-range ballistic missiles could contribute to some Russian tactical victories, they are certainly no game-changers. Read previewA cargo ship suspected of transporting ballistic missiles from Iran was seen at a port in Russia last week, according to newly released satellite imagery. These short-range ballistic missiles have satellite guidance and a maximum range of around 75 miles. It's unclear exactly how many missiles Russia received, although the Treasury Department said Moscow and Tehran signed an agreement in late 2023 for the supply of hundreds of missiles. Russia received Iranian missiles, similar to the one seen here. Iran has also supplied Russia with one-way attack drones, while North Korea has given Moscow ballistic missiles and artillery.

Iran has sent short-range ballistic missiles to Russia for its war against Ukraine in a “dramatic escalation” that will let Moscow strike deeper inside Ukrainian territory, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Tuesday. “Russia has now received shipments of these ballistic missiles and will likely use them within weeks in Ukraine against Ukrainians,” Blinken told reporters. “Dozens of Russian military personnel have been trained in Iran to use the Fath-360 close-range ballistic missile system, which has a maximum range of 75 miles,” he said. Confirmation from Washington that Iran is now arming Russia with sophisticated short-range ballistic missiles will likely increase pressure on the Biden administration to ease restrictions on how Ukraine can use weapons to strike at targets inside Russia. Iran has denied it is providing missiles to Russia and has called for countries to halt any weapons shipments to either side in the conflict.

CNN —The United States imposed new sanctions on Iran’s main airline as three key European allies announced they will move to do the same in response to Tehran’s transfer of ballistic missiles to Russia for its war in Ukraine. Russia has now received shipments of these ballistic missiles and will likely use them within weeks in Ukraine,” Blinken said alongside his British counterpart, David Lammy. “It adds to their capacity, and it fuels the war,” Blinken said of the new Iranian missiles Russia now has. “Anyone who proves assistance to Russia … is perpetuating the war, is perpetuating the conflict,” he added. Lammy described it as the “first joint visit of this kind for well over a decade.”CNN previously reported that the shipment of the Iranian missiles had arrived in Russia.
