While it might look like the stuff of nightmares, this tiny robot covered in living skin could mark a step forward in the quest to make robots more human-like. It’s the work of researchers in Japan, who say they have discovered a new way to bind living skin tissue to a mechanical robotic surface. Previously, he developed a “living” robot skin — using collagen, a fibrous protein in human skin, and human dermal fibroblasts, the main cell type in connective tissue — that could be applied to a robotic finger and bend without breaking. The new method uses V-shaped holes on the robot's surface to attach the living skin securely. However, ensuring the consistency and quality of the living skin might not be so easy, says Takeuchi.

CNN —Younger generations are getting their first periods earlier, and the length of time it takes to become regular is changing — which could point to later health problems, according to a new study. But other research has documented the trend in first menstrual cycles starting at earlier ages over time. Earlier periods might be associated with high body mass index, or BMI, during childhood, Wang said. “This implies that childhood obesity, which has been increasing in the US, might be contributing to people getting their periods earlier,” Wang added. Physicians should evaluate children with early periods or a long duration of irregular cycles to make sure there isn’t an underlying problem, Feinberg said.

The new paper, however, is a meta-analysis of 90 studies that had examined the links between loneliness, social isolation and early death among more than 2 million adults. People who experienced social isolation had a 32% higher risk of dying early from any cause compared with those who weren’t socially isolated. Holt-Lunstad was the lead scientist on the US Surgeon General’s recent advisory report on social isolation and loneliness. Broadening social connectionsPeople experiencing social isolation and loneliness should actively seek social support, Wang said. Public health strategies to address loneliness and social isolation, including raising awareness, are also needed, Wang said.

BEIJING — Hotel reservations in China have surpassed pre-pandemic levels since late June, booking site Trip.com said Thursday. Trip.com shares briefly fell by more than 7% Thursday in Hong Kong trading, before recovering slightly to close 4.5% lower. "Overall our domestic China hotel reservation on our platform quickly rebounded and [have] surpassed pre-Covid levels from late June," Cindy Xiaofan Wang, chief financial officer at Trip.com, said during an earnings call Thursday morning. "Total domestic hotel bookings was around 20% higher than 2019 level in July, and we continued to grow over the 2019 level in August and achieved hyper growth versus 2021," she said. That growth came despite continued sporadic lockdowns and travel restrictions across China to control Covid outbreaks.
