Spain’s 200-year-old holiday lottery "The Fat One" delivered a hefty prize again this year, with over $2.8 billion in prizes warbled out by school children and watched live around the world. The annual drawing for "El Gordo" took place on Sunday at Teatro Real, the country's preeminent opera house in the capital Madrid. El Gordo is held annually on Dec. 22, and is a key part of the Christmas season in Spain offering one of the largest lottery prize pools in the world. The number of series changes each year, and in 2024, each number had 193 copies, meaning that many people shared the same winning ticket number, according to the official website. CNN —Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on a busy sidewalk in Midtown Manhattan, is expected to be arraigned Monday in New York on state murder and terror charges. A federal criminal complaint was unsealed Thursday, in which Mangione was charged with murder through use of a firearm, two stalking charges and a firearms offense. He could face the death penalty if found guilty of the federal murder charge, while the state charges carry a maximum penalty of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Brisbane, Australia CNN —A former US Marine accused of training Chinese military pilots will be extradited to face charges in the United States, Australia’s Attorney General confirmed Monday, dealing a blow to supporters who have mounted a public campaign for his freedom. Daniel Duggan, a naturalized Australian, was arrested in the state of New South Wales in 2022 based on a 2017 US grand jury indictment that accuses him of training Chinese military pilots in violation of a US arms embargo. Duggan denies the charges, claiming that US officials knew about his activities and that he was only training civilian pilots as China’s aviation sector boomed. In a statement to CNN in 2023, TFASA said it complies with the laws of every jurisdiction in which it operates. Since then, the UK and Australia have tightened their laws surrounding former military personnel and their post-service activities.
