He let his coaches coach.”“It was all coaching,” Robinson told The Athletic in 2020. He became the Ducks’ offensive coordinator in 1960, after graduating, before taking the same job at USC under legendary USC coach John McKay in 1972. When McKay left USC to coach the NFL expansion team Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1976, Robinson succeeded him. Bobby Allison, founder of racing’s “Alabama Gang” and a NASCAR Hall of Famer, died Saturday. He was the 1983 NASCAR champion, finished second in the series title race five times, and a three-time winner of the Daytona 500. Allison was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1992 and into the NASCAR Hall of Fame along with Ned Jarrett, Bud Moore, Pearson and Lee Petty. “Though he is best known as one of the winningest drivers in NASCAR Cup Series history, his impact on the sport extends far beyond the record books. An eighth-inning rally capped by sacrifice flies by second baseman Gavin Lux and outfielder Mookie Betts put the Dodgers in front. This title, the eighth in franchise history, can stand beside the Dodgers’ trophy from the pandemic-shortened season in 2020. The precedent feels preposterous until you consider the current Dodgers who will one day join them in the Hall of Fame. “Mark,” he told Freeman, “wants to win really bad.” That desire became clear to Ohtani when he met with the Dodgers. After Freeman launched his grand, Gibsonian walkoff in Game 1 against the Yankees, the Dodgers got the job done.

Let’s do that now, because here’s what I think we’ve been watching:A World Series with possibly eight future Hall of Famers. So no World Series is ever catching the 1932 Series, when an incredible 13 eventual Hall of Famers took the field. How about saying you were there when Freddie Freeman took over a World Series in his own Freddie-esque way? And it looks exactly like that dude who trots — or sometimes limps — out to first base every night in this World Series. • Easy as 1-2-3 — We’re three games into this World Series, and Freeman has homered in all three of those games.

AdvertisementPlease note that this isn’t the same as the worst World Series matchup possible. In the actual 2024 World Series, there will be several future Hall of Famers playing, most of them in their absolute prime, doing unreal things to and with baseballs. It’s a very good World Series if you like to watch excellent players and displays of baseball ability. Been there, done thatThis World Series is a Simpsons episode from Season 43 where Homer gets a new job. But even though it has the potential to be the best World Series, it’s guaranteed to be the most annoying World Series possible.

Pete Rose, who holds the Major League Baseball record for hits and games played, has died at the age of 83, according to a spokesperson for the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner in Nevada. The hard-charging Rose, nicknamed “Charlie Hustle,” broke Ty Cobb’s 57-year-old hits record in 1985. After his playing career, Rose continued as manager of the Reds. In 1989, Rose was banned from baseball for life after an investigation concluded that he had bet on games while he was both a Reds player and manager. Over the years, Rose applied for reinstatement as well as possible inclusion into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Rose was one of baseball’s greats – a winning-obsessed sparkplug who topped MLB’s all-time hit list with 4,256 over a 24-season career. It wasn’t until 2004 that Rose publicly admitted betting on baseball and the Reds, though he denied ever betting against his own team. Sometimes, on the weekend of baseball Hall of Fame inductions in Cooperstown, New York, he also would hold autograph sessions at a nearby bookstore. While Cooperstown didn’t admit him into its Hall of Fame, the Reds got him into theirs with the commissioner’s permission. That was the perfect way to capture Rose, said Johnny Bench, the Hall of Fame catcher.

Monte Kiffin: Longtime NFL and college coach dies at 84

CNN —Longtime NFL and college coach Monte Kiffin has died at the age of 84, the University of Mississippi announced on Thursday. Kiffin passed away peacefully in Oxford, Mississippi, surrounded by friends and family, the school said. The Buccaneers-owning Glazer family said Monte was a “beloved and iconic member” of the organization. “As a coach, Monte was a true innovator who got the best out of his players and helped create one of the signature defenses of the early 2000s,” the Glazer family said in a statement. Lane has been the head coach of Ole Miss since 2020 where Monte has been an analyst on the staff.

There is a focus on fake stories to influence attitudes on subjects like the wars in Ukraine and Gaza. But for the past year, the climate crisis has been the second-most targeted subject, according to the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO). Official statistics, however, tell a different story: In 2022, renewables accounted for 23% of the energy consumed in the EU. The EU is considered a global leader in tackling planet-heating pollution, but climate disinformation could undermine the bloc’s ambitious goal to reduce carbon emissions by 90% by 2040, compared with 1990 levels. Its community standards policy in the past had only targeted video, but in April, it was expanded to include audio.

CNN —I can’t recall a recent baseball story that has captured the public imagination like the current one involving Los Angeles Dodgers phenom Shohei Ohtani, his former translator Ippei Mizuhara and gambling. That said, assuming Ohtani has done nothing wrong, America’s pastime will emerge from this situation mostly unscathed. Ohtani stalls at second base after hitting a double during the first inning of a game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Yes, one team is favored to win, but we don’t know that team will win for sure. De’Aaron Fox added 20 points, nine assists and seven rebounds, but was held to 5-for-19 shooting. WBD generated $6.2 billion of free cash flow through 2023 and likely shelled out around $1.4 billion of that for NBA games. Analysts estimate that figure would be closer to $2 billion if WBD re-ups its NBA package. WBD wants a big NBA deal, despite Wall Street's wishesSixteen months ago, Zaslav said WBD didn't "have to have" the NBA. NBA ratings have been lackluster lately, with national TV games averaging 1.6 million viewers in the last two seasons. Zaslav's latest public remarks on the NBA negotiations reflect that.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Last season's All-Star Game played out in a way that the NBA hopes to never experience again. So, the league sent a message: Make the All-Star Game better. Boston's Jayson Tatum set an All-Star Game record by scoring 55 points and the game had a total — total — of four free throws, all of them shot by Antetokounmpo's team. “I’m proud of what the guys did at the in-season tournament and I’m looking forward to the All-Star Game. Durant is a 14-time selection and set to actually play in his 11th All-Star Game.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Don’t expect Denny Hamlin to stay in line during the closing laps of the Daytona 500. “In the end, you have to be selfish to win these races and certainly we realize that through results more than anything else,” Hamlin said. He’s repeatedly made it clear he wouldn’t trade any of his Daytona 500 victories for series championships. “I think Denny is really good at, like, being dramatic and building our sport up well, bringing some drama to it. I think that’s good.”The ultimate drama might be seeing Hamlin jockeying teammates and his own drivers over the final laps.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — No one needs to remind Kyle Larson about his record at Daytona International Speedway. “It’s tougher today than it’s ever been,” three-time Daytona 500 winner and current Hendrick Motorsports vice chairman Jeff Gordon said. He's finished 18th or worse in half of his Daytona 500 starts. Truex doesn’t have a top-10 finish in the 500 since, but he did win the series championship the following year. Hall of Famers Tony Stewart, Rusty Wallace and Mark Martin are the most notable drivers to never win the Daytona 500.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — First-time candidate Julius Peppers headlines a 2024 Pro Football Hall of Fame class that has a distinctive defensive feel. He was a first-team All-Pro five times in eight seasons and helped San Francisco reach three straight conference title games and one Super Bowl. Freeney was the defensive star on the stellar Colts teams led by Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning. Johnson became the first player to spend the bulk of his career with the Texans to make the Hall of Fame. McMichael had 95 career sacks as a defensive tackle, was selected as an All-Pro in 1985 and ’87 and was a second-teamer two other times.

Killens’ first appearance in a Super Bowl had ended in unimaginable disappointment. The linebacker, who was in the league for seven seasons, never competed in another Super Bowl during his playing days. Killens is part of the crew officials ruling over the upcoming Super Bowl – which will be played in Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium on February 11 between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers – making him first person to both play in and referee a Super Bowl. Dyson is tackled by St. Louis linebacker Mike Jones just short of the goal line on the last play of Super Bowl XXXIV. When we wear the stripes, we are guardians of the game,” Killens explains.

While Vedder remains the face and voice of the band, the star of this album is drummer Matt Cameron, who joined the Jam in 1998 after starting out with Soundgarden. His relentless pounding opens many of the 11 tracks, and drowns out his bandmates' playing and Vedder's vocals at times. “Every time I've played someone the record it was like a two-day recovery,” Vedder said. The band members credited Watt, who was less than a year old when their first album “Ten” was released in 1991, for lifting them to the heights they hit.
