That’s when Election Day turns into election night, and each state starts reporting its vote totals. Virginia is an example of a state that usually has a geography-driven red mirage early on election night. Another factor that can cause vote mirages is partisan differences by vote mode — mail ballots, early in-person votes, Election Day in-person votes, and so on. This will produce a vote mirage if there are partisan differences between the earliest-returned mail ballots and the later-returned ones. As Election Day votes were reported in the next few hours of election night, the size of the blue mirage shrunk to about 3.5 points.

A Brazilian au pair involved in a Virginia double-murder case took a plea deal on Tuesday, cooperating with prosecutors as they prepare to go to trial against the woman's former boss. Peres Magalhaes called 911 on the morning of Feb 24, 2023, and reported that a friend was hurt, police said previously. Her plea deal downgrades the murder charge to manslaughter and drops the firearm charge. Peres Magalhaes and Brendan Banfield said Ryan attacked the au pair, which led him to shoot Ryan in self-defense, according to NBC Washington. An attorney for Brendan Banfield did not immediately return a request for comment on the plea deal on Monday.

FAIRFAX, Va. — A jury on Friday acquitted a former police officer in Virginia of involuntary manslaughter after he fatally shot a shoplifting suspect outside a busy shopping mall. But the jury did convict the former police sergeant, Wesley Shifflett, of reckless handling of a firearm in connection with the shooting. After the shots were fired, Shifflett immediately yelled “stop reaching” and told other officers that he saw Johnson reaching in his waistband. During cross-examination, Sands asked Shifflett about shooting Johnson before commanding that the victim “stop reaching.”“My motor functions were operating more quickly than I could verbalize,” Shifflett said. The special grand jury returned indictments on charges including involuntary manslaughter and reckless handling of a firearm.

Spokesperson Jillian Cowherd said the voter registration process is started at the DMV, but completed at the Virginia Elections Department. It’s also used to verify voter rolls. But user and data errors in the DHS system — such as confusing people who share the same name — have led to people being inaccurately flagged on voter rolls, Clapman said. She said Youngkin’s announcement of noncitizen voters “stokes election denial generally, undermining faith in election results. A young couple claimed they were being harassed by the wife of a Supreme Court justice. The officer on the line responded that there was little the police could do: Yelling was not a crime. The couple placed the call after a series of encounters with Martha-Ann Alito, wife of Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr., that had gone from uneasy to ugly. The clash between the wife of a conservative Supreme Court justice and the couple, who were in their 30s, liberal and proud of it, played out over months on a bucolic block in Alexandria. But three years later, that neighborhood spat — which both sides said began over an anti-Trump sign — has taken on far greater proportions.

watch nowOutcomes for workers without a degree are improvingIn fact, young adults without a college degree are doing better than they have in years, according to Pew's analysis of government data. Since then, circumstances — and earnings — have continued to rise for workers with just a high school diploma or some college. Improving job opportunities for "new-collar" workers without a degree continues to drive more students away from college. Finishing college puts workers on track to earn a median of $2.8 million over their lifetimes, compared with $1.6 million if they only had a high school diploma, Georgetown's report found. Adults with at least a bachelor's degree report higher financial well-being than adults with lower levels of education, according to a Federal Reserve study on economic well-being of U.S. households.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A GOP legislative effort to prevent Virginia children from using the popular video-sharing app TikTok — an idea backed by Republican Gov. Jay Leftwich of Chesapeake, was left in a House of Delegates committee after concerns were raised about how the ban would be enforced. Leftwich also said he brought the bill out of mental health and data privacy concerns for young people. “But I will not be supporting this bill because I think it’s unfair to single out TikTok,” she said. “We’ve long said bans, like the one proposed in this legislation, are not only the wrong approach, but also raise significant First Amendment concerns," Brown said.

McLEAN, Va. (AP) — A Virginia Senate committee on Tuesday rejected legislation that would have allowed a referendum on a casino in the wealthy suburbs of the nation’s capital. The committee rejected a motion to kill the bill outright, instead opting to carry the bill over to 2025 for future consideration. A study commissioned in 2019 by the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Committee found that a northern Virginia casino could generate $155 million annually in tax revenue, more than any of the other casinos built in Virginia. Virginia voted in 2020 to allow locations in five cities, subject to referendum. Bristol, Danville, Portsmouth and Norfolk all voted for a casino; Richmond voters twice rejected a proposed casino in that city.

FALLS CHURCH, Va. Another bill that passed the committee Wednesday would allow Petersburg to hold a referendum on a casino in place of Richmond. Marsden said allowing a casino in northern Virginia provides geographic diversity and fairness. Legislative studies have also shown that a northern Virginia casino would generate more tax revenue than anywhere else. The Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce supports the bill.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Former Virginia House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn has decided against a bid for governor in 2025 and will instead run next year to represent the competitive northern Virginia congressional seat being vacated by a fellow Democrat, U.S. Rep. Jennifer Wexton. “This is an unfair, devastating reality that she now has to navigate,” Filler-Corn said, adding that she had discussed her plans with Wexton. The open seat dynamic in the Loudoun County-centered 10th District — Filler-Corn said she lives just outside it — could set up a competitive race with implications for party control of the U.S. House. Filler-Corn is a strong fundraiser who led the Democratic House caucus during the national scandal and party strife that exploded after the 2019 discovery of a racist photo in former Gov. Neither has publicly committed to a run and both have also said they are focused on this year's legislative races.

WASHINGTON, June 30 (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday turned away a dispute involving a transgender woman whose former jailers housed her with men and delayed her hormone treatment in a case that asked whether gender dysphoria is a disability under federal law. At issue was whether gender dysphoria, a condition involving distress resulting from a discrepancy between a person's gender identity and their assigned sex at birth, qualifies as a disability under a landmark 1990 federal law called the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The jail classified Williams as male because she "maintains the male genitalia with which she was born," according to 2021 court records. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the judge's ruling, finding that gender dysphoria is protected under the ADA.
