He had discovered the iron-rich soil could be used in a chemical reaction with a potassium compound and nitric acid to produce a vibrant blue pigment. But over the past three years, the Chicago-based artist and architect Amanda Williams has been reviving Carver’s blue with the help of researchers and scientists. “So there was a practicality to it, but there was also ingenuity in figuring out that things around you can yield unexpected results.”An arts building at Xavier University painted in Carver blue. In 2024, she started working at Costco, and her husband says she looks "lighter" coming home. I started working as a high school math teacher in 2007. Eventually, it was too much and I decided to leave my job at the school and go work at Costco instead. I decided to apply at Costco and got a job stocking shelves on the early shift, starting around 4 a.m. Equally, I was looking forward to working a job and then leaving it at work — not taking anything home with me.

My son just got his driver's license and loves his newfound freedom. AdvertisementWhen my oldest got his driver's license, I learned that some of his friends' parents installed apps so they could track their kids, but I refused to follow suit. I understand why people track their kidsMost people track their children for one of two reasons: to ensure their safety or to ensure they're going where they said they were. But that extra step feels like we're communicating and respecting each other, rather than me stealthily watching him on my phone. But it's one more way they're growing up; I'm trying to grow up and let go as well.

She wants to rebuild for her family of six, but the costs are overwhelming, especially since her rental assistance ran out two months ago. For many Lahaina homeowners, rental assistance through their insurance ended in October after they’d spent the first couple of months post-fire filing claims and getting shuffled into hotels. Carolyn Auweloa and Mikey Burke have started Lahaina Community Land Trust so residents have the option to stay in Lahaina or sell within the community. Before they can apply for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s rental assistance, homeowners must first exhaust all of their LOU and ALE policies, which cover rental costs when a disaster makes your home uninhabitable. The Lahaina Community Land Trust understands that funding is an uphill battle, but it has slowly been making gains.

AdvertisementRecession fears have eased, boosting investor confidence in the stock market. Rising Treasury yields and drying liquidity could hurt stocks with valuations high. Recession fears have largely dissipated since this summer, bolstering investor confidence in a roaring stock market. Edwards said rising yields will eventually put a damper on the stock market, especially with valuations continuing to climb. Alternatively, sharply rising bond yields can cause problems to equities in a high PE environment – such as now," Edwards said.

Five Canadian news media companies filed a legal action on Friday against ChatGPT owner OpenAI, accusing the artificial-intelligence company of regularly breaching copyright and online terms of use. OpenAI using other companies' journalism for their own commercial gain is not. In an 84-page statement of claim filed in Ontario's superior court of justice, the five Canadian companies demanded damages from OpenAI and a permanent injunction preventing it from using their material without consent. A coalition of Canada’s biggest news organizations is suing OpenAI, the maker of the artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT, accusing the company of illegally using their content in the first case of its kind in the country. Five of the country’s major news companies, including the publishers of its top newspapers, newswires and the national broadcaster, filed the joint suit in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice on Friday morning. While this is the first such lawsuit in Canada, it is similar to a suit brought against OpenAI and Microsoft in the United States in 2023 by The New York Times, claiming copyright infringement of news content related to A.I. The two companies have denied the suit’s claims. In response to the Canadian lawsuit, a spokesman for OpenAI said “We have not yet had the opportunity to review the allegations,” but added that “our models are trained on publicly available data, grounded in fair use and related international copyright principles that are fair for creators and support innovation.”

More remote workers were superstar codersMusk now aims to apply that same ruthless efficiency to the federal government. On one hand, he found that the prevalence of "ghost engineers" among remote workers was more than double that among in-person workers. But he also found that many more of the most effective engineers — employees whose performance was at least five times better than their median colleague — were working remotely.

Attractive returns and a breadth of opportunities are among the reasons the U.S. market historically reigns supreme among investors. However, one market watcher considers U.S. stocks to be expensive and is now seeking opportunities in cheaper markets with what he sees as better risk-adjusted returns. "Many large U.S. stocks appear to be expensive and consequently are offering lower future returns," Morningstar analysts wrote in a 2025 outlook report. I can assure you that Kevin is very real and, this year, very excited. Somehow this racist dictator was able to assemble a new coalition of Black, Hispanic, middle-class and working-class voters. Turns out even people in blue America don’t like it when their groceries cost more and they feel less safe. I must admit I had misgivings about Trump and his election denial after Jan. 6, but Nancy Pelosi’s hijacking of the House’s special investigating committee shifted my perspective. There was no world in which Trump could have come out of that committee without being scarred.

Mortgage rates dropped last week, and homebuyers jumped off the fence. They drove total mortgage demand up 6.3% compared with the previous week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association’s seasonally adjusted index. While the drop in rates wasn’t exactly huge, there was a fair amount of pent-up demand among homebuyers. Last year at this time mortgage rates were higher, but falling.
