A coalition of Canada’s biggest news organizations is suing OpenAI, the maker of the artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT, accusing the company of illegally using their content in the first case of its kind in the country. Five of the country’s major news companies, including the publishers of its top newspapers, newswires and the national broadcaster, filed the joint suit in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice on Friday morning. While this is the first such lawsuit in Canada, it is similar to a suit brought against OpenAI and Microsoft in the United States in 2023 by The New York Times, claiming copyright infringement of news content related to A.I. The two companies have denied the suit’s claims. In response to the Canadian lawsuit, a spokesman for OpenAI said “We have not yet had the opportunity to review the allegations,” but added that “our models are trained on publicly available data, grounded in fair use and related international copyright principles that are fair for creators and support innovation.”

CNN —Thousands of supporters of Pakistan’s jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan broke through barricades around the capital Tuesday and marched into Islamabad, clashing with security forces and demanding his release. The latest protests came as Islamabad bolstered security for an official visit by Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko, who arrived in the capital on Monday for three days of talks with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The housing agency provides rental assistance for low-income households, administers mortgage insurance to prospective homeowners and enforces fair housing law. During Trump’s first term, his office repeatedly sought to make steep cuts to HUD’s budget, though they never passed Congress. If Trump successfully implements budget cuts “there will be longer waiting lists for housing vouchers. Liz Osborn, the vice president of policy at Enterprise Community Partners, a nonprofit focused on home access and affordability, said that HUD budget cuts in Trump’s second term aren’t a guarantee, though.

Wall Street's celebration of President-elect Donald Trump's Treasury pick may be a tad premature. The market's resurgence following the Bessent announcement makes for calming copy, but is it the correct assessment of what's to come? It's true that Wall Street veteran Bessent has been a successful money manager. However, Bessent suggested that he is comfortable using tariffs as negotiations to " escalate to de-escalate " the risks of global trade imbalances. But little of what's been discussed about the Treasury Secretary pick supports the rather large rallies we've seen in both stocks and bond prices.
