On top of that, the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) subsidies to reshore the battery supply chain to the U.S. are also "having the desired impact," it added. It named companies such as LG Energy Solution and Samsung SDI which have more than 65% of U.S. battery manufacturing capacity. LG Energy Solution has the additional benefit of being the most exposed to growth and IRA benefits, they added. But Bernstein said it prefers Samsung SDI to LG Energy Solution for now, as the former offers "growth at a reasonable price." Bernstein gave Samsung SDI and LG Chem an outperform rating and LG Energy Solution a market perform rating.

In Mo i Rana, a small Norwegian industrial town on the cusp of the Arctic Circle, a cavernous gray factory sits empty and unfinished in the snowy twilight — a monument to unfulfilled economic hope. The electric battery company Freyr was partway through constructing this hulking facility when the Biden administration’s sweeping climate bill passed in 2022. Perhaps the most significant climate legislation in history, the Inflation Reduction Act promised an estimated $369 billion in tax breaks and grants for clean energy technology over the next decade. Its incentives for battery production within the United States were so generous that they eventually helped prod Freyr to pause its Norway facility and focus on setting up shop in Georgia. Its pivot was symbolic of a larger global tug of war as countries vie for the firms and technologies that will shape the future of energy.

Morgan Stanley has identified several stocks to invest in as electric vehicle battery manufacturing shifts to the West. EV giant Tesla , auto parts maker Aptiv , and battery maker Freyr rank highly, according to Morgan Stanley, while Ford and Chinese batter maker CATL rank lower. Tesla Tesla is well placed to overcome the three challenges, Morgan Stanley said. Ford / CATL Morgan Stanley noted that companies like Ford and Chinese battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology, or CATL, might face challenges when it comes to "onshoring" due to geopolitical concerns and potential technological barriers. Ford will own the new facility but will license battery manufacturing technology from CATL, including technical expertise.

BERLIN, April 17 (Reuters) - Luxembourg-based Freyr Battery (7XN.F) sealed its partnership with Siemens (SIEGn.DE) at the Hannover Messe conference on Monday, making the German technology company its preferred supplier in automation and digitalization technology. Freyr plans to equip its planned gigafactories in Norway and the United States with Siemens technology, and the two companies will join forces along the entire battery design and manufacturing process, the firms said in a statement. "This relationship is much broader than the usual customer-supplier relationship and is strategic in nature," Freyr chief executive Tom Einar Jensen told Reuters. Instead of the conventional 18 production steps, Freyr wants to make do with eight, he said, adding: "With Siemens, we can ramp up production faster and better, and with a much lower reject rate.
