However, the post-election environment is hitting different this time around for many small business owners, such as Barrel-Art’s Michael Prieto, and leaving them wondering what comes next. Earnings drove the stock market higher — can they do it again in the week ahead? But he acknowledged that timing is key because our portfolio discipline mandates that we consider lightening up our stock exposure in an overbought market. In fact, AMD was our worst-performing stock for the entire week, losing more than 7% following the prior week's 1.8% slide. Energy was the worst sector of the week for the market as oil prices sank. In the week ahead, housing numbers are the main draw on the economic front.

A major Wall Street strategist is jumping aboard the story that materials stocks could be at the start of a big rally. That theory played out during last week's rally for Chinese stocks. The Chinese stock market just had its best single day in more than a decade. It's also the last trading day of the week in China due to the Golden Week holiday. Against this backdrop, Roth MKM's JC O'Hara highlighted one S & P 500 sector that might benefit the most from a rebound in China's economy: materials. Some materials stocks highlighted by O'Hara as potential winners, at least based on their price charts alone, are O-I Glass , Corteva and Freeport-McMoRan . To be sure, investors should tread carefully in materials, O'Hara said.

Trivariate Research is laying out some U.S. companies that could win big in China's latest stimulus deal. Last week, China's central bank released a raft of support measures to help stimulate economic growth and boost a struggling real estate market in the second-largest economy in the world. "We see the China stimulus as an incremental positive to risk-taking," wrote Trivariate founder Adam Parker in a note to clients. Trivariate is not the only firm that views commodity stocks as potential beneficiaries, with Morgan Stanley recently naming Freeport in its shopping list for commodity stocks. Gaming stocks could also win big with China's stimulus deal.

These commodity stocks could win big as China moves to boost its struggling real estate sector and economy, according to Morgan Stanley. Morgan Stanley's team believe these measures display a heightened "sense of urgency" and signal that China is "taking deflation seriously." Against this backdrop, the firm sees a positive setup for metals and mining stocks that have underperformed the S & P 500 by 25 percentage points since May. Here are some of the names that could benefit from China's stimulus: Within the mining sector, Morgan Stanley names Freeport-McMoRan and Alcoa among its top picks, with shares up about 22% and 17%, respectively, this year. Analysts view U.S. Steel as one of the biggest beneficiaries from a China stimulus along with shares of Nucor .

Moody's estimates that between 2023 and 2028, the electricity usage in data centers will grow 43% yearly. That's not including the energy-intensive process of constructing even more data centers, which Big Tech is scrambling to do. Business Insider spoke with three market experts to get their thoughts on what companies are best positioned to succeed as AI's appetite for energy strains existing infrastructure. Baker is betting on the utilities and cooling solutions providers that service the energy needs of data centers. New infrastructure needs to be built out, and the existing infrastructure needs to be bolstered, according to Wilhelmus.

But improved price action this week suggests Freeport-McMoRan, Inc. (FCX) may be poised for further upside into the fourth quarter. So with a bearish momentum reading at the May peak, then a bullish momentum reading at the August and September lows, FCX was primed for an upside breakout. The breakout in March 2024, leading to the May peak, suggested a new uptrend as the price exited this basing pattern. The stock gapped higher on Tuesday, pushing above short-term resistance around $46 as well as a trendline using the May and July highs. The stock did become overbought this week, with the RSI popping just above the 70 level on the recent breakout.

Mourners prepared to gather on Friday in a corner of western Pennsylvania to say their final goodbyes to Corey Comperatore, the father of two who was killed during an attempt to assassinate former President Donald J. Trump at a rally last weekend. The funeral was set to take place at 11 a.m. at the church in Cabot, Pa., where Mr. Comperatore, 50, was a longtime member. Mr. Comperatore’s life revolved around this small pocket of Pennsylvania: He grew up in Sarver and still lived there with his high school sweetheart and two daughters. He attended church in Cabot and graduated from high school in nearby Freeport. People here are not accustomed to crowds, but crowds are what they have spent the week preparing for as Mr. Comperatore has been thrust into the national spotlight.

Oil little changed as investors eye impact of storm Beryl on Texas
  + stars: | 2024-07-08 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Oil prices were little changed as investors eyed energy supply disruption, with the largest ports in Texas shut before Tropical Storm Beryl likely strengthens into a hurricane and makes landfall on Monday. Brent crude futures inched up 11 cents, or 0.1%, to $86.65 a barrel as at 0042 GMT after closing down 89 cents on Friday. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was at $83.08 a barrel, down 8 cents, after settling down 72 cents in the previous session. Lower interest rates can boost economic activity and increase crude oil demand. Investors were also watching for any impact from elections in the UK, France and Iran last week on geopolitics and energy policies.

Artificial intelligence is set to give the global data center market a major boost, according to Jefferies, and usher in a "new era of electricity demand." "As GPUs [graphics processing units] have become a larger part of the data center ecosystem and drive AI investments, demand for power and data center space has grown at a feverish pace," the investment bank's analysts wrote in a June 18 note. They noted that demand for data center space has increased between 10% and 20% each year for most of the past 15 years. As the data center market grows, so will demand for electricity, Jefferies said, naming a slew of beneficiaries in these segments and beyond. Among the "pure-play data center" names it likes are Digital Realty Trust and Equinix .
