Some major tech companies including Meta are taking steps to combat “pig butchering” scams, which trick Americans out of billions of dollars each year through fake online friendships and romances. Pig butchering scams are elaborate and often take months to unfold. Meta on Thursday announced it has taken its first major steps into addressing the scams, including dedicating staff to identify where scammers operate, sharing that information with international law enforcement, and taking down more than 2 million accounts this year. The announcement reflects how more tech companies are recognizing the severity of pig butchering scams. Calling themselves the Tech Against Scams coalition, the companies pledged to share scammer information with each other and better educate users.

SYDNEY, Australia — Australia’s center-left government on Thursday introduced a bill in Parliament that aims to ban social media for children under 16 and proposed fines of up to $32 million for social media platforms for systemic breaches. Australia plans to trial an age-verification system that may include biometrics or government identification to enforce a social media age cut-off, some of the toughest controls imposed by any country to date. France last year proposed a ban on social media for those under 15, but users were able to avoid the ban with parental consent. The law would force social media platforms, and not parents or young people, to take reasonable steps to ensure the age-verification protections are in place. “Social media has a social responsibility ... that’s why we are making big changes to hold platforms to account for user safety,” she said.

☆ U.N. Watchdog Censures Iran Over Nuclear Program Secrecy

The United Nations’ nuclear watchdog agency censured Iran on Thursday evening for failing to cooperate fully with the agency’s monitoring and inspection, as the country is obligated to do under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. The censure by the International Atomic Energy Agency could lead to penalties against Iran, including renewed economic sanctions. The agency’s Board of Governors voted 19 to 3, with 12 abstentions, for the censure, despite intensive lobbying by Iran and its foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi. The three votes against were cast by Russia, China and Burkina Faso. Mr. Araghchi promised that Iran would retaliate if the resolution passed, most likely choosing to accelerate its enrichment of uranium to levels close to bomb grade, rather than putting a cap on that enrichment.

CNN —Ukraine launched the British-French-made Storm Shadow missiles at targets inside Russia for the first time on Wednesday, according to a Russian military blog and Reuters, a day after Ukraine fired US-made ATACMS missiles into Russia. When Umerov was asked if Ukraine used the Storm Shadow missiles to hit a target inside Russia, he replied, “we are using all the means to defend our country, so we’ll not go into detail. A weapons expert who reviewed the video for CNN said there are no indications the explosions are from a different type of munition, but it’s not possible to definitively say they are from Storm Shadow missiles. The UK and France have previously supplied the long-range Storm Shadow missiles for Ukraine to use inside its own borders. Gisele Pelicot on Tuesday lambasted the cowardice of the dozens of men accused of abusing her during 10 years of mass rape organized by her husband and told the court hearing the trial France’s patriarchal society must change.
