Wells Fargo Why we own it : We bought Wells Fargo as a turnaround story under CEO Charlie Scharf. We are more excited by the outperformance of non-interest income than we are disappointed with the miss on net interest income. However, the team added, many of the factors driving net interest income are uncertain heading into the second half of the year. We don't like to see guidance misses, but bank interest income estimates depend on interest rates, which Wells Fargo has no real control over. Non-interest income increased 12% thanks to higher asset-based fees driven by an increase in market valuations.

Wells Fargo Why we own it : We bought Wells Fargo as a turnaround story under CEO Charlie Scharf. In addition, the bank's net interest margin came up short, and therefore net interest income. However, bank interest income estimates depend on interest rates, a factor Wells can't control. Net interest income fell 17% year over year as deposits declined due to customers reallocating cash into higher-yielding securities. Non-interest income increased 9% thanks to higher asset-based fees driven by an increase in market valuations.

Industry practice suggests that a large share of hedge funds trading in repo markets put up zero collateral, meaning they are fuelling activity using enormous amounts of cheap debt. A looming rule by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission would expand the use of central clearing in the cash Treasury and repo market. SEC chair Gary Gensler recently promoted the benefits of central clearing and pointed to data showing high levels of repo trades transacted at zero haircuts. James Tabacchi, CEO of South Street Securities, called zero haircuts a "race to the bottom" and not healthy for markets. However, some market participants have voiced concerns that some of the proposed reforms could be a hurdle for some investors, potentially undermining the goal to improve liquidity and resilience in the Treasury market.

The SEC central clearing rule, first proposed in September last year, would apply to the cash Treasury and repurchase agreements (repo) markets, where banks and other players such as hedge funds borrow short-term loans backed by Treasuries. "This creates a potential single-point of failure risk as recent events illustrate," he said, referring to the ICBC hack. Abate also flagged cybersecurity risks for direct members of the FICC, as well as clients they sponsor to access the clearing platform, saying mandatory central clearing could make FICC "a fortress with many doors." The SEC is expected to finalize the rule early next year, said Barclays, but it is unclear how much time the industry would have to implement it and whether central clearing will occur simultaneously for Treasuries and repo transactions.

Group sales over the three-month period ending in September rose by 4% to 11.58 billion euros, slightly above the 11.52 billion-euro consensus. Germany's Deutsche Bank reported a 12% drop in such revenue for the period, while Britain's Barclays reported a 13% decrease. BNP set aside 734 million euros for credit losses, below the 815 million euros expected by analysts. BNP Paribas beat estimates on debt financing, cost management
  + stars: | 2023-07-27 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
BNP Paribas , the euro zone's biggest bank, beat estimates in the second quarter as the corporate debt financing business and strong cost management partly offset a slump in securities trading. Group revenue fell 1.5% to 11.4 billion euros, also above expectations, while the cost of risk — money put aside for failing loans - came in lower than expected at 689 million euros. By contrast, sales from global banking activities within CIB - which comprise bond issues, syndicated loans and cash management — jumped by 17.5% in the second quarter at constant scope and currencies. BNP's bottom line in the second quarter also suffered from a set of exceptional items that totaled 723 million euros after tax. These included an 125 million euro provision for an unspecified litigation.

July 18 (Reuters) - Bank of America (BAC.N) beat Wall Street estimates for second-quarter profit on Tuesday as it earned more from customers' loan payments, while its investment banking business fared better than expected. The bank reported a 7% rise in investment banking fees to $1.2 billion, driven by higher interest payments and leasing revenue, the company said. The bank reported a profit of 88 cents per share in the second quarter, beating analysts' average expectations of 84 cents, according to IBES data from Refinitiv. BofA's net interest income (NII) rose 14% to $14.2 billion in the second quarter. The financial health of consumers underpins BofA's consumer banking unit, whose revenue rose 15% to $10.5 billion.

NEW YORK/WASHINGTON, May 15 (Reuters) - As talks over raising the U.S. government's $31.4 trillion debt ceiling intensify, Wall Street banks and asset managers have begun preparing for fallout from a potential default. Citigroup (C.N) CEO Jane Fraser said this debate on the debt ceiling is "more worrying" than previous ones. U.S. government bonds underpin the global financial system so it is difficult to fully gauge the damage a default would create, but executives expect massive volatility across equity, debt and other markets. Banks, brokers and trading platforms are prepping for disruption to the Treasury market, as well as broader volatility. Bond trading platform Tradeweb said it was in discussions with clients, industry groups, and other market participants about contingency plans.
SummarySummary Companies Q1 investment bank sales up 20%Trading activity outperforms peersConfirms 2025 targetsPARIS, May 10 (Reuters) - Credit Agricole SA (CAGR.PA), France's second-biggest listed bank, posted better-than-expected earnings on Wednesday, as market volatility boosted trading revenue. This helped drive Credit Agricole's quarterly sales to 6.12 billion euros ($6.74 billion), up 9.6% from a year earlier, while net income more than doubled to about 1.23 billion euros. Both figures beat market expectations of 5.9 billion euros and 816 million euros, respectively, according to an analyst consensus compiled by the company. Deposit levels were stable in the quarter from a year earlier for the group, Credit Agricole said. The cost of risk -- money set aside for failing loans -- fell to 374 million euros, as concerns linked to the war in Ukraine subsided.
Royal Bank of Canada analysts said the results pointed to a strong performance at BNP's trading arm and good cost control. In securities trading, revenue edged down 1.8% but still performed better than some peers including Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE), which saw fixed-income trading decline by 17% in the first quarter. At U.S. bank Goldman Sachs, first-quarter sales from fixed income, currency and commodities (FICC) trading, usually a bright spot, plunged 17% to $3.93 billion, while equity trading revenue sank 7% to $3.02 billion. The first quarter net income, group share amounted to 4.44 billion euros, in line with expectations, and up from 1.84 billion a year earlier. The first tranche of 2.5 billion euros was approved in March, a sign analysts deemed reassuring as it took place shortly after the collapse of Credit Suisse.
BNP Paribas , the euro zone's biggest bank, saw profit more than double in the first quarter from a year ago, bolstered by the sale of its U.S. retail division while revenue beat estimates. This allowed the French bank to beef up its capital and liquidity buffers, at a time when European lenders strive to restore confidence in a sector battered by turmoil. In securities trading, revenue edged down 1.8% but still performed better than some peers including Deutsche Bank, which saw fixed-income trading decline by 17% in the first quarter. At U.S. bank Goldman Sachs, first-quarter sales from fixed income, currency and commodities (FICC) trading, usually a bright spot, plunged 17% to $3.93 billion, while equity trading revenue sank 7% to $3.02 billion. BNP's FICC trading over the period was up 9%.
LONDON, April 27 (Reuters) - Barclays reported better than expected first-quarter profit on Thursday after a strong performance from its credit card business offset pressure on other business lines. The British bank's pretax profit of 2.6 billion pounds ($3.25 billion) beat analyst forecasts for a repeat of the previous year's 2.2 billion pounds. Income at the lender's consumer, cards and payments division rose 47% to 1.3 billion pounds thanks to rising credit card balances driven partly by its acquisition of a portfolio from retailer Gap last year. While higher credit card spending boosted Barclays' finances, there were signs this could have a sting in the tail. Fixed income, currencies and commodities (FICC) was a bright spot, with income rising 9% to 1.8 billion pounds.
April 18 (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs Group Inc's (GS.N) profit fell 19% as dealmaking and bond trading slumped in the first quarter and it lost money on the sale of some assets in its consumer business. Goldman booked a $470 million loss on the sale of some loans from Marcus, dragging down first quarter results. The logo for Goldman Sachs is seen on the trading floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, New York, U.S., November 17, 2021. But deposits held in the Marcus business remain core to Goldman and are not under review, a source familiar with the matter had told Reuters earlier this year. Goldman's lackluster trading results contrast with those of Bank of America Corp (BAC.N), which also reported earnings on Tuesday.
Earnings per share for the six biggest U.S. banks are expected to be down about 10% from a year earlier, analyst estimates from Refinitiv I/B/E/S show. The bank is expected to report a 30% rise in EPS, buoyed by an almost 36% increase in net interest income, according the Refinitiv I/B/E/S estimates and Reuters calculations. "We expect a challenging earnings season for the banks," said David Chiaverini, banking analyst at Wedbush Securities, in a note. He said bank managements will become more defensive, implementing liquidity measures that could lead to downward revisions for net interest income. Net interest income for the six biggest U.S. banks are expected to be up about 30% from a year earlier, according to analyst estimates from Refinitiv I/B/E/S.
