Forcing the issue is the end of many of the tax cuts Republicans passed in 2017. Republicans want to protect their handiwork and extend the tax cuts before they lapse. By conventional budget rules in Washington, doing so would amount to a tax cut — and an expensive one at that. Republicans are struggling to come up with other tax increases or spending cuts to cover that cost. So maybe it is not a surprise that some of them are starting to advance an alternative theory of the case: that continuing existing tax cuts actually costs nothing.

Markets abhor uncertainty. That bit of Wall Street wisdom helps explain their ebb and flow since Donald J. Trump’s victory on Election Day, and even earlier. Stocks and bond yields began rising early in October, when Wall Street concluded that Mr. Trump would win. Yet for the markets, uncertainty hasn’t vanished. He promises lower corporate taxes and less regulation: Those assurances are being widely interpreted as a recipe for fat company profits and a prosperous stock market.

The atlas suggests ovaries are an untapped, rapid way to study human longevity treatments. Or, more specifically, test them out on aging ovaries, whether in well-controlled human studies, in the ovaries of mice, or in donor tissue samples. It shows that ovarian aging is a great proxy for overall human aging at a molecular level — ovarian aging is just happening several decades earlier, and very rapidly. So more and more people are paying attention to this concept of ovarian aging and considering it as a true aging process." Her study displays in fine cellular and molecular detail how human ovaries age, and how genetics impact the process.

CNN —President-elect Donald Trump named billionaire Scott Bessent as his pick to serve as the next secretary of the Department of the Treasury. A key Cabinet player, the US Treasury secretary advises the president on economic and fiscal matters, including spending and taxes. Bessent would be the first out gay Treasury secretary, as well as the first LGBTQ Senate-confirmed Cabinet member in a Republican administration, according to The Associated Press. Compared to Lutnick’s more aggressive campaign for the role, Bessent led a more understated quest for the position. All of the names Trump put out Friday night had been decided by the afternoon, the sources said, but he wanted to name his Treasury secretary first before publicly releasing his other decisions.

The star, known as WOH G64, is 160,000 light-years from Earth in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small neighboring galaxy that orbits the Milky Way. Van Loon has observed WOH G64 since the 1990s and studied it as a student at the European Southern Observatory. The Hubble Space Telescope soon revealed it had indeed been a red supergiant in the past, perhaps 20,000 years before the explosion. “If this is what we are seeing (WOH G64) doing, then a spectacle awaits us soon,” van Loon said. It’s nowhere near as bright or variable as WOH G64, van Loon said, and only experienced a brief hiccup compared with what WOH G64 is undergoing.

Professor Yoshua Bengio, at the One Young World Summit in Montreal, Canada, on Friday, Sept. 20, 2024Famed computer scientist Yoshua Bengio — an artificial intelligence pioneer — has warned of the nascent technology's potential negative effects on society and called for more research to mitigate its risks.
