Harris presidency, split government A victory for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the White House, plus a Republican-controlled Congress, could be "the best outcome" for online media companies, according to Bank of America analyst Justin Post. He noted that Harris is likely to enforce a potential ban on TikTok — which could boost Meta Platforms and Snapchat . Trump president, split government A win for Republican candidate Donald Trump and a split government would be the best-case scenario for bank stocks, per analyst Ebrahim Poonawala. FBI agents on Thursday arrested an Alabama man for his alleged role in the Jan. 9 hack of the Securities and Exchange Commission's X account, which sent the price of bitcoin spiking by more than $1,000, the Department of Justice announced. The tweet said, "Today the SEC grants approval for #Bitcoin ETFs for listing on all registered national securities exchanges." Shortly afterward, the SEC regained control of its social media account, and announced the tweet was false and the result of a hack. A day after the hack, the SEC approved rule changes that allowed the creation of bitcoin ETFs in the United States. Council, who used the online handles "Ronin," "Easymunny," and "AGiantSchnauzer," allegedly was paid in bitcoin by co-conspirators for his role in the hack.

The Securities and Exchange Commission's chair, Gary Gensler, recently warned about "AI washing," or companies giving off a false impression that they're using AI so they can amp up investors. And while some companies are simply exaggerating the tech they do legitimately use, others have taken it a step further. The main explanation for the recent gain in bitcoin's price is the Securities and Exchange Commission's begrudged blessing of spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds, investment vehicles that track bitcoin's price. As bitcoin ETF providers have to invest in the underlying assets — bitcoins — demand for those assets increases. "The speed of the come-up is much faster than I thought," he said, adding that he was specifically surprised at retail-trader activity in the bitcoin ETFs. (Also, not everyone agrees it will be good for bitcoin's price.) Or maybe, just maybe, the latest run will cement bitcoin's future as a more stable part of people's investment portfolios.

A federal appeals court agreed to rehear a challenge by two conservative groups to Nasdaq's board diversity rule related to the disclosure of women and minority membership on boards of companies listed on the stock exchange. The 5th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, in its order Monday night setting a rehearing, also vacated a decision in October upholding the Nasdaq rule by a three-judge panel from the appeals court, which encompasses Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. The Nasdaq rule requires companies to disclose details about the diversity of their boards of directors, and to either have a minimum number of women and minorities on their boards or explain why they do not. "NASDAQ's rule promotes racial discrimination and polarizing personal disclosures and it is to be hoped that this rule is struck down," Blum said. The SEC and Nasdaq did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the rehearing order.

The value of all the bitcoin in circulation, or market capitalization, on Wednesday rose above $1 trillion for the first time since late 2021, according to CoinMarketCap data. The cryptocurrency also broke through the $51,000 level during the day, marking the first time it has hit this price since December 2021. When the halving takes place, the rewards given to bitcoin miners are cut in half, which reduces the volume of the cryptocurrency onto the market. The newly-issued spot bitcoin ETFs recorded net inflows of $1.1 billion last week. ETFs are a product that track the price movement of another asset, in this case allowing investors to play bitcoin price moves without owning the underlying cryptocurrency.

The stablecoin market cap is growing again, which is a good sign for crypto market liquidity, but it hasn't fully recovered and could face regulatory challenges this year, according to JPMorgan. Stablecoins expanded by $60 billion between their May 2022 peak and their October 2023 low of $122 billion. But as investors anticipated the Securities and Exchange Commission's approval of spot bitcoin ETFs in the U.S., the market expanded by $9 billion between October 2023 and January 2024. This is generally a "positive sign" for crypto, according to JPMorgan analyst Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou. Despite bitcoin's stellar 157% gain in 2023 and nearly ideal setup for 2024, the crypto market has been struggling with low liquidity since last year.

Bitcoin miners have tumbled since last Thursday, following the launch of spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds .
