Soren Lassen, head of offshore wind research at Wood Mackenzie, said the U.S. offshore wind industry is going through a needed readjustment, and that while the long-term outlook remains intact, progress has been pushed out. South Fork Wind offers tangible evidence that wind projects can work. The company developed the five-turbine Block Island Wind Farm, which is northwest of South Fork Wind, in 2016. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management first awarded the leases for South Fork Wind in 2013, which where acquired by Deepwater Wind. In September, Skyborn Renewables, a Global Infrastructure Partners portfolio company, acquired Eversource's 50% stake in both South Fork Wind and Revolution Wind.

Utility stocks are an affordable way to gain exposure to the artificial intelligence trend and hedge against a slowing economy even after the sector's recent rally, according to Goldman Sachs. Yet, utility stocks still remain relatively affordable. Goldman is forecasting above consensus earnings growth of 2% on average in 2026 for the 16 utility stocks it covers. NextEra , Xcel Energy , Sempra and Southern Company offer the best exposure to the data center power demand surge among Goldman's buy-rated stocks, according to the bank. "However, a return to a rising bond yield environment could weigh on the performance of utilities," the Goldman analysts said.

The Biden administration greenlit the seventh large offshore wind project in the United States Tuesday. Danish wind energy developer Ørsted and the utility Eversource plan to build a 924-megawatt project, Sunrise Wind, 30 miles (48 kilometers) east of Montauk, New York. This month, the companies opened the nation's first commercial-scale offshore wind farm. They announced their financial commitment to the Sunrise Wind project when the Interior Department issued its decision. The Biden administration wants enough offshore wind energy to power 10 million homes by 2030.

America's first commercial-scale offshore wind farm is officially open, a long-awaited moment that helps pave the way for a succession of large wind farms. The Biden administration has approved six commercial-scale offshore wind energy projects, and auctioned lease areas for offshore wind for the first time off the Pacific and Gulf of Mexico coasts. Ørsted CEO Mads Nipper called the opening a major milestone that proves large offshore wind farms can be built, both in the United States and in other countries with little or no offshore wind energy currently. The first U.S. offshore wind farm was supposed to be a project off the coast of Massachusetts known as Cape Wind. The nation's second large offshore wind farm, Vineyard Wind, is expected to open later this year off the coast of Massachusetts, too.

Traders work on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., October 27, 2023. The U.S. October employment report out later on Friday caps a hectic two weeks of central bank decisions, company updates and unnerving geopolitics. As the first major marker of U.S. economic strength in the final quarter of the year, the payrolls report packs a punch despite expected strike-related distortions. The interest rate relief this week is pervasive, however, as the Fed, ECB and BoE all paused tightening and U.S. Treasury debt sales worries ebbed somewhat. U.S. Treasury (.MOVE) and equity market (.BIX) volatility gauges have subsided to their lowest levels since early last month.

However, the company said it has taken the final investment decision on the Revolution Wind project offshore Rhode Island, meaning it will now proceed to construction phase. Orsted isn’t alone in facing the increasing financial challenge of building new sprawling offshore projects. New York regulators last month denied requests from offshore wind developers including BP , Equinor and Orsted to give them a higher price for electricity generated from their projects off the state’s coast. The company still sees full-year Ebitda excluding new partnership agreements and provisions of between DKK20 billion and DKK23 billion. Gross investments for the year are now seen at DKK40 billion to DKK44 billion from DKK44 billion to DKK48 billion previously.

By joining forces, the states hope to counter the pain rippling across the nascent U.S. offshore wind industry, which is expected to play a key part in decarbonizing the power sector and revitalizing domestic manufacturing. The three states will seek multi-state offshore wind proposals for selection in 2024 for up to 6,000 megawatts (MW) of power. “One year ago, Avangrid was the first offshore wind developer in the United States to make public the unprecedented economic headwinds facing the industry," Avangrid said in a release. After the worst sell-off in months, CNBC Pro sought to find stocks trading at deeply discounted levels that could pay off for investors buying for the long term. Fears of longer-than-expected interest rate hikes hammered down on stocks this week. Citigroup last week trimmed its price target on Devon Energy by $2 to $55 and maintained its buy rating. Other energy names Eversource and Atmos , both in the red for the year, are also trading at significant discounts. Recent highs in oil prices have driven bullish sentiment on energy stocks.

May 8 (Reuters) - Vanguard Group, the largest provider of mutual funds, has secured regulatory approval to continue to own big stakes in U.S. power utilities, overcoming Republican concerns over its environmental, social and governance (ESG) policies. Regulators had previously allowed Vanguard to exceed that antitrust limit on the basis that this would not interfere with the utilities' operations. Vanguard countered that its funds do not exert control over the decisions of the utilities. Vanguard reiterated in a statement on Monday that it leaves "management decisions to companies and policy decisions to policymakers." A representative for Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita, one of the leaders of the group challenging the FERC extension, said he would comment in coming days.

While there was some minor repricing of Fed probabilities in the futures market, the latest bout of bank stock nerves is unlikely to change the Fed's course on its own. A White House economist on Tuesday said Fed rate hikes were having a negative impact on the banking sector. Signs of some loosening of a very tight labor market may also encourage the Fed that its rate hiking job is done after this week. Private sector job readings for April are due later today along with service sector surveys for the month. With the Fed in view alongside the debt ceiling crunch and bank stock retreat, longer-term Treasury bonds rallied.

U.S. President Joe Biden is expected on Tuesday to name Fed Vice Chair Lael Brainard to a top White House economic policy position, replacing National Economic Council Director Brian Deese. Biden confidant Jared Bernstein is expected to replace Cecilia Rouse as chair of the Council of Economic Advisers. Brainard was seen as a powerful voice cautioning against over-aggressive Fed policy tightening. U.S. stock futures and world equities were higher on Tuesday, U.S. Treasury yields and the dollar were steady to lower. Euro zone economic growth slowed in the last three months of 2022 but avoided a contraction many had predicted for months.
