London/Washington, DC CNN —President-elect Donald Trump is set to overturn a ban on some US exports of liquefied natural gas, or LNG, in a boon for US energy producers. The final decision on additional LNG exports is “in the hands of the next administration,” Energy Sec. CNN —Donald Trump is stoking political mayhem in Canada by intensifying a crisis that threatens to oust Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. In a searing resignation letter, Freeland, a longtime Trudeau loyalist, effectively accused him of promoting frivolous policies that would leave Canada badly exposed to Trump. !”With Trump, trade is a win or lose gameThis is vindictive behavior from the leader of a great nation toward its biggest trading partner. The European Commission opened formal proceedings Tuesday against social media firm TikTok over its suspected failure to limit election interference, notably in the Romanian presidential vote last month. Romania’s top court subsequently annulled the presidential election after accusations of Russian meddling and the victory of pro-Russia ultranationalist Calin Georgescu in the first round. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the new investigation followed serious indications that foreign actors interfered in the Romanian presidential election. Whenever we suspect such interference, especially during elections, we have to act swiftly and firmly,” she said in a statement. CNN —German Chancellor Olaf Scholz faces a confidence vote on Monday he is expected to lose, paving the way for a snap election early next year . Scholz initially announced that he planned to hold a confidence vote on January 15, but he came under immediate pressure from the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party to hold them sooner. If a snap election is called, polls point to the conservative CDU, the party of former long-serving chancellor Angela Merkel, being on track to win. Germany’s economy shrank last year for the first time since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Germany’s last snap election was in 2005.

Homicide rates are nearly four times as those in the United States, according to Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography. In the United States, you can apply at the Netherlands embassy in Washington or at the consulates-general in Miami, New York or San Francisco. In addition, as with Costa Rica, Panama also does not have a tax treaty with the United States. It’s also a long way away from the United States, which can be tricky for visits to see loved ones. Cons: As is the case in Mexico and other countries with large expat communities, there’s growing backlash against the influx of foreigners, especially Americans, and especially in Lisbon.

The Biden administration is considering new rules that would require airlines to pay passengers for significant delays within a carrier’s control. Other proposals include requiring airlines to rebook passengers at no additional cost on the next available flight, covering meals, overnight lodging and related transportation expenses for stranded passengers. It comes as over 60% of three-hour or longer domestic flight delays were “airline-caused” in 2022 and 2023, according to airline data submitted to DOT. The news release noted that the U.K., E.U., Canada and Brazil have consumer protections to compensate passengers and provide services of significant delays in place. “One study found that the European Union’s compensation and service requirements reduced the likelihood and duration of flight delays,” the DOT said in a news release said.

CNN —A highly decorated former Israeli defense minister has caused a firestorm by accusing Israel of carrying out ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in northern Gaza. The interviewer expressed surprise at Ya’alon’s use of the phrase “ethnic cleansing,” asking, “Is that what you think – that we’re on the way there?”“Why ‘on the way?’” he responded. The ECB cut rates for the first time in five years in June, but kept them unchanged at its last meeting in July. However, it marginally downgraded the outlook for economic growth in the eurozone to 0.8%, from 0.9% projected in June. “Financing conditions remain restrictive, and economic activity is still subdued, reflecting weak private consumption and investment,” the ECB said. The summer of 2024 was the hottest on record, according to the European Union’s climate monitor, extending an alarming run of temperature records that has put the planet firmly on course to notch its hottest year in human history. The EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) said on Friday that the global average temperature for the boreal summer, which refers to the Northern Hemisphere’s June through August period, was the highest on record. The summer months were found to be 0.69 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 average for the June-August period. It surpasses the previous record from June-August last year, which was 0.66 degrees Celsius above the average baseline. Samantha Burgess, deputy director of C3S, said the world had experienced the hottest June and August, the hottest day on record and the hottest boreal summer on record in the space of just three months.

London CNN —The United States and Europe are racing to narrow China’s commanding lead in clean energy technologies, throwing subsidies at local manufacturers and hiking tariffs on Chinese imports in a strikingly protectionist turn. Without China’s electric vehicles (EVs), solar panels, wind turbines, and batteries, reducing planet-heating pollution could take longer and ultimately increase costs for businesses and consumers. Beijing’s virtual monopoly on the processing of some critical minerals comes with particular risks for the global green transition. Zhu Haipeng/VCG/APAny delay in switching to clean energy will exact a heavy toll on the planet. Birol at the IEA also advocates for trade policies that diversify supply chains while reducing the risk of delays to the clean energy transition.
