A heavy police and FBI presence blocks off the French Quarter near Bourbon Street in New Orleans late Wednesday morning after a terrorist attack. Emily Kask / AFP - Getty ImagesAuthorities have cited ISIS’ branch in Afghanistan, known as ISIS-K, as a particular danger. “While we don’t know the extent of ISIS involvement yet, this was either inspired by the group or directed from abroad,” Clarke said. In November 2016, authorities said, ISIS propaganda inspired a Somali refugee to drive a car into a crowd at Ohio State University and then stab students trying to help those hit by his car. Western intelligence agencies have generally managed to counter the threat posed by the group, Zelin told NBC News.

The Oval Office sit-down comes at a moment when domestic U.S. political chaos could further destabilize an increasingly chaotic world. One day ahead of his meeting with Biden, European Council President Charles Michel expressed optimism that Biden can deliver on his promises to help arm and financially support Ukraine. But some House Republicans have questioned the value of aid to Ukraine at the levels sought by Biden. Republican lawmakers have failed to find a successor, leading to concerns that Biden's commitments with the EU could be in jeopardy. We put all that at risk if we walk away from Ukraine, if we turn our backs on Israel."

Notably, Trump refused to plant a flag in the sand on a potential federal abortion ban. Trump is vague on federal abortion banTrump repeatedly ducked questions about whether he would sign into law a federal abortion ban, as well as after how many weeks into a pregnancy abortion should be made illegal. He touted the Supreme Court’s decision last year to overturn Roe v. Wade’s federal abortion rights as “such a great victory” – and one made possible by his appointment of three conservative justices. But Trump also recognized splits within the GOP over whether to impose a federal abortion ban, and what the conditions of such a ban should be. “We now have a great negotiating ability, and I think we’re going to be able to get something done,” Trump said.
CNN —Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan claimed on Sunday that the country’s intelligence forces had killed the leader of ISIS in Syria as he vowed to continue the country’s fight against terrorism. In a broadcast, Erdogan said Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization had been tracking a man known as Abu al-Hussein al-Husseini Al-Qurshi “for a long time.”“This person was neutralized in the operation carried out by MIT (Turkish National Intelligence Organization) yesterday in Syria,” he said. Little was known about Al-Qurshi, but at the time of his appointment, ISIS described him as an “old fighter.”Erdogan’s announcement came after a recent absence from the public eye due to illness. Cagla Gurdogan/ReutersMedia reports had speculated that his health was deteriorating just two weeks before a crucial election.
The overall rise is a reversal of a 15-year trend that has seen US stock indices, flush with fast-growing tech companies, consistently beat those across the Atlantic. Over the past decade, investors poured money into fast-growing tech stocks, aided by ultra-low interest rates. (SXXL)But tech companies have taken a beating recently. Tech companies, including Microsoft and Alphabet, announced thousands of layoffs last month. High interest rates make it more expensive for companies to borrow to expand their business, raising doubts about their future earnings.
New Delhi CNN —Semiconductor giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) may expand its global manufacturing footprint even further. The company is considering opening its first plant in Europe and a second one in Japan, its CEO CC Wei said in an earnings call on Thursday. TSMC, which produces an estimated 90% of the world’s super-advanced chips, has already upped its investment in the United States. The company announced last year that it’s building a second semiconductor factory in Arizona and raising its investment there from $12 billion to $40 billion. The company is also considering building a second fab in Japan, “as long as the demand from customers and the level of government support makes sense,” he said.
PARIS — The White House is rolling out the red carpet for French President Emmanuel Macron — again. Though Macron was also honored with the first state dinner of Donald Trump’s presidency, the relationship between the two leaders devolved into tension that both Macron and Biden now are hoping to reverse. “We do not imagine that Congress, moreover, with a House of Representatives with a Republican majority, could fundamentally revise the IRA,” the Élysée official observed. Macron, and Europe more broadly, hope China can develop into more of a partner than a competitor, particularly with respect to trade. But above all, Macron is simply looking for some respect — or as the senior Élysée official put it, “Sovereignty.
London CNN Business —Global growth will slow further in the coming year but the world will likely avoid a recession thanks to Asia’s biggest economies. “Persistent inflation, high energy prices, weak real household income growth, falling confidence and tighter financial conditions are all expected to curtail growth,” it added. If energy prices rise further or energy supply is disrupted, growth could be even weaker than expected. India is projected to have the world’s second highest growth rates, after Saudi Arabia, at 6.6% in 2022, followed by 5.7% in 2023. “Higher interest rates, while necessary to moderate inflation, will increase financial challenges for both households and corporate borrowers,” the OECD said.
The UK-based energy company posted underlying profit of $8.15 billion in the July to September period, compared with $3.3 billion a year ago. BP (BP)’s earnings were boosted by “exceptional” results in its gas trading business, it said in a statement on Tuesday. Also last week, America’s largest oil company, ExxonMobil set a profit record for the second straight quarter, while Chevron (CVX) and French oil company Total (TOT)Energies posted similarly huge increases. The unprecedented set of earnings is fueling renewed calls in Britain and the United States for windfall taxes on energy companies to help households that are struggling to pay rising bills. EU governments, on the other hand, agreed a windfall tax in September that they hope will raise $140 billion.
