CNN —Eight people were injured after a cable car crashed more than 3,000 meters (9,800 feet) above sea level at France’s Val Thorens ski resort on Tuesday, authorities said. The incident seriously injured two people, and left six others with less severe injuries, the local department said. Construction was taking place ahead of Val Thorens’ ski season. Val Thorens is one of Europe’s most popular skiing destinations, and is the continent’s highest altitude resort. The Cime Caron mountain, where the incident occurred, has an altitude of nearly 3,200 meters (10,500 feet).

Population density and topography obviously have a significant effect on construction costs. “There was also a lack of discussion over the chosen route, which could have followed existing highway corridors.”Rapidly rising construction costs have plagued major projects across the world in recent years. However, their efforts were in vain and only succeeded in significantly driving up construction costs. ‘Mutilated and pointless’Plans have been dropped for a proposed HS2 railway station at Meadowhall in Sheffield.

The hour-long conversation marked the return of diplomacy to the decade-long conflict, even if their talk brought the familiar refrain it was not yet time to talk. One Western official said there was an “overall collective holding of breath” in Western capitals ahead of Trump’s inauguration. “The Germans speaking to Putin – that will have gone down badly” among Ukraine’s allies, the official said. “Giving Putin that positive bounce will have irked the French and others.” French President Emmanuel Macron has been particularly vocal about continuing support for Ukraine. Last year’s French soccer cup final saw some 3,000 police and 1,400 staff deployed, reports CNN affiliate BFMTV. This Thursday’s UEFA Nations League match between France and Israel will take place in the Stade de France, the centerpiece of Paris’ 2024 Olympic Games. The minister set an aggressive tone in his first months in office and his response to the Amsterdam attacks was no different. Just this week, the Israeli ambassador in Paris was summoned to the French foreign ministry after two French policemen were briefly detained in Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem. Yet, in the light of recent events in Amsterdam, it is keen to show its commitment to protecting French Jews: Thursday’s match offers the perfect opportunity.

Reuters —Europe’s biggest meal delivery firm, Just Eat Takeaway, said on Wednesday it had struck a deal to sell its U.S. unit Grubhub to Wonder for $650 million, sending its shares soaring 20% in early trading. “Just Eat Takeaway is at last putting an end to its disastrous U.S. journey,” Bryan Garnier analyst Clement Genelot said, noting the group had destroyed more than $7 billion in shareholder value there. Grubhub’s enterprise value of $650 million includes $500 million of senior notes and $150 million cash, Wonder said in a statement. Just Eat CEO Jitse Groen had in February said the M&A environment was not easy in the U.S., where fee caps cost the group some $100 million per year. JPMorgan said in a note it had argued for an about $1.2 billion valuation for Grubhub in the past, but the market would view the long-awaited deal as positive even at a lower valuation.

That’s a lot of damage – but it’s only a small fraction of what climate change has cost people around the world. A new report is flashing a warning signal about climate change and natural disasters, finding that their total economic damage has skyrocketed into the trillions. “Just as the global financial crisis was met with a swift and concerted response from world leaders, we need governments to understand that the economic impact of climate change necessitates a response of similar speed and decisiveness,” said John W.H. Trump has promised to undo climate regulations in the country, including rolling back pollution limits on tailpipes and power plants. London CNN —President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed protectionist policies, including hefty tariffs, will hurt Europe’s economic standing — leaving crisis-hit Germany particularly vulnerable, Goldman Sachs predicts. Goldman Sachs expects gross domestic product across the 20 countries that use the euro to expand 0.8% next year, down from the 1.1% it forecast previously. Goldman Sachs’ central expectation is for “a more limited set of tariffs on European economies,” targeting primarily their auto exports. Goldman Sachs now expects the German economy to grow only 0.5% next year because of trade tensions, just over half the 0.9% growth it forecast previously. “For European businesses, Trump’s return to the White House implies considerable trade policy risks and geopolitical uncertainty,” Berenberg chief economist Holger Schmieding wrote in a note Thursday.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed Trump’s “decisive leadership” and his “‘peace through strength’ approach in global affairs.”Some Ukrainians were nonplussed by what they saw as the equivocal support provided by President Joe Biden — despite that totaling some $175 billion since 2022 — and say they remain optimistic Trump could offer a new start. “Poland’s leadership will rise to the occasion.”Freed from the responsibility of having to retain diplomatic ties with Trump, some of Europe’s mayors appeared more willing to speak openly about the president elect. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said Trump’s win was “bad news for the world, democracies, Europe, climate, women and Ukraine, a country fighting for our freedom.” She accused Trump of “playing his part” in undermining democracy and the rule of law. “Others will be worried about the future of NATO or tackling the climate crisis.”Beijing most likely sees danger, too, in Trump’s unpredictability as well as his promised 60% tariffs on Chinese goods. But may also see opportunity in what is viewed as his isolationist ability to diminish American influence around the world.

Nearly all the world’s countries pledged to strive to keep global warming under 1.5 degrees Celsius in the Paris Agreement, which scientists said would prevent cascading and worsening impacts such as droughts, heat waves and catastrophic sea level rise. Data released Wednesday by Europe’s Copernicus Climate Change Service shows 2024 is “virtually certain” to shoot above that threshold. “We don’t have time to stop,” Alex Scott, a climate diplomacy strategist at international think tank ECCO said Wednesday. It would be a more “serious” and “dramatic” step, said Alden Meyer, senior associate at climate think tank E3G and a longtime international climate expert. With Trump’s reelection, global climate negotiations are facing another whiplash moment as Americans seesaw between presidential extremes, said Meyer.

BRUSSELS, Belgium — The European Union is imposing duties on imports of electric vehicles from China starting Wednesday after talks between Brussels and Beijing failed to find an amicable solution to their trade dispute. According to the commission, which manages trade disputes on behalf of the 27 E.U. member countries, sales of Chinese-built electric cars jumped from 3.9% of the EV market in 2020 to 25% by September 2023, in part by unfairly undercutting E.U. Other EV manufacturers in China, including Western companies such as Volkswagen and BMW, would be subject to duties of 20.7%. Destatis revised down GDP figures for the second quarter from -0.1% previously. Germany’s economy shrank last year for the first time since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. The outlook isn’t much brighter: the International Monetary Fund sees zero economic growth this year, marking the weakest performance among major economies. “He found it peculiar that he could not think of any waltzes by Chopin that matched the measures on the page,” reads the statement. “Chopin famously wrote in ‘small forms,’ but this work, lasting about one minute, is shorter than any other waltz by him,” adds the statement. “Extensive research points to the strong likelihood that the piece is by Chopin,” according to the statement. This research included analysis by paper conservators who found that the paper and ink match those that Chopin normally used. The discovery of an unknown piece of work by Chopin has not happened since the late 1930s, according to the museum.
