Former President Donald Trump has won Pennsylvania, NBC News projects, securing 19 Electoral College votes in the most hotly contested battleground state of the race. Trump was the only other Republican nominee to carry the state when he won it in 2016. Carrying Pennsylvania puts Trump one step closer toward reclaiming the White House four years after he lost the state to Joe Biden. NBC News exit polling showed Trump winning 57% of Latinos in the state after exit polls in 2020 showed him winning just 27% of Pennsylvania's Latino vote. Meanwhile, officials on both sides of the aisle, particularly in Pennsylvania, felt Harris would secure her win in Pennsylvania by tapping Josh Shapiro, the state’s popular governor, as her running mate.

Here's a look at some of the key counties to watch across the seven presidential battleground states, ordered by the state's final poll closing time (in Eastern Standard Time). Mitt Romney won more than 80% in Forsyth in 2012, but Trump won just two-thirds of the vote there eight years later. In 2020, Joe Biden won this county by only 4 points over Trump, while Hillary Clinton carried it by 13 points in 2016. As President Joe Biden fought to remain in the presidential race this summer, advisers often argued there existed a “Biden coalition” — a cohort only the incumbent could hold together. The record shows that Mr. Trump often pursues his stated goals, regardless of how plainly they lack legal or moral grounding. A stark shift toward former President Donald Trump on the political gambling platform Polymarket this month stoked scrutiny about four accounts that have collectively spent over $28 million betting on the Republican nominee to win the 2024 presidential election. Polymarket on Thursday confirmed what a number of experts have suspected: All four accounts are controlled by a single trader. The company insisted that it has found no evidence that the trader is trying to juice Trump's odds on the political betting market. The scrutiny on the Polymarket trades comes as political betting markets have taken on a much more prominent role in the 2024 election cycle.

“The polls — public and private — are closer in this election than any I have ever seen,” said Dan Pfeiffer, a former aide to Barack Obama. Republican pollster Frank Luntz summed up the election with a single gif: A coin flip. The Trump era brought a return of uncertainty after most pollsters and prognosticators missed his 2016 victory, and 2024 is the narrowest polling election of all three of his runs. For Ms. Harris and Mr. Trump, each could be a crucial building block in a winning swing-state coalition. In 2016, with Mr. Trump in the race, these areas began to march to national trends: Rural areas trended Republican, while Milwaukee’s well-off, close-in suburbs zoomed left. Still, loyalties remain potent in Wisconsin, from Democratic-leaning, ancestrally Scandinavian voters in the state’s rural west to middle-class suburban Republicans outside Milwaukee. Mr. Trump lost Nash County by just 0.2 points in 2020 and Wilson County by three points.

The anxiety abated for a bit when Vice President Kamala Harris replaced him on the ticket and her poll numbers spiked. With Harris' numbers stagnant now for weeks, many Democrats are once again fretting that the election is slipping away and that Donald Trump may yet regain power. Harris appears to be OK with the collective jitters, recognizing that if Democrats fear they might lose, they're more apt to show up at the polls and help her win. Polling shows that neither Harris nor Trump has built a lead outside the margin of error.
