New York City faces an affordability crisis. His criminal case has obscured better news — that officials are advancing several ambitious proposals that hope to improve life in the city. The Democrats who run New York are crafting new policies because voters are concerned about their quality of life. The cost of living has become a campaign issue in Adams’s re-election next year, and his rivals are highlighting affordability. Washington state is reeling following a powerful “bomb cyclone” that left two dead, knocked out power to half a million at its peak and downed trees and power lines. The Pacific Northwest was battered by the storm, which formed off the coast Tuesday and brought high winds, rain and heavy mountain snow to Washington. ET Thursday, there are over 320,000 customers without power in Washington, according to PowerOutage.Us. Meanwhile, a strong atmospheric river event is also impacting Northern California and southwestern Oregon, with flood watches in effect for 2 million people. This will lead to storm totals of 12 to 16 inches by the time the storm winds down by the weekend.

An NYPD officer and another woman were shot in Queens by an armed robbery suspect who was believed to be responsible for multiple robberies within the span of just about an hour, according to police. As police searched for the suspect, officers were flagged down by a witness who pointed out a man on Jamaica Avenue and 160th Street. The witness told police the man had just robbed a smoke shop on Guy Brewer Boulevard, and fired a shot while doing so, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny. After being ordered to drop his weapon, the suspect fired once, hitting Officer Rich Wong in the thigh, Kenny said at a press conference from the hospital. Worthy, who had been arrested for seven crimes since 2001, was also wanted for three other robberies at gunpoint, according to police.

CNN —Record-breaking ocean temperatures, fueled by planet-warming pollution, have turbocharged dozens of Atlantic hurricanes over the last few years, making them more potent and dangerous by increasing their wind speeds. Every hurricane in the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season was made stronger than it otherwise would have been without human-caused climate change, according to analysis from nonprofit climate research group Climate Central. Wind speeds of the 11 hurricanes were increased by 9 to 28 mph by water that was up to 2.5 degrees Fahrenheit warmer because of climate change. Nine of this season’s 11 hurricanes rapidly intensified and climbed up the hurricane category scale due to climate change-driven ocean heat. Climate Central researchers also found that human-caused climate change made exceptionally warm ocean temperatures that fueled Milton’s explosion 400 to 800 times more likely.

New York City declared a drought warning on Monday, its first in 22 years, as the Northeast deals with severe dry conditions and brush fires during a historically dry autumn. The last drought warning in New York City was issued in 2002. Under a warning city agencies adopt drought protocols and voluntary water conservation is encouraged for New Yorkers. New York City's water supply needs almost 8 inches of rain to reach normal levels, officials said. Kathy Hochul also declared a statewide drought watch on Monday citing “a historic shortage of rainfall” and elevated 15 counties in the Mid-Hudson region and New York City, to a drought warning.

New York AP —The leader of a New York City church where pop star Sabrina Carpenter filmed provocative scenes for a music video was stripped of his duties Monday after church officials said an investigation revealed other instances of mismanagement. Released on October 31, 2023, the “Feather” music video revolves around men behaving badly toward Carpenter before meeting grisly deaths. Among them is an ongoing investigation into Gigantiello’s use of a church credit card for “substantial” personal expenses, he said. Meanwhile, the commotion set off by her music video hasn’t been lost on Carpenter. She made light of it during a concert at Madison Square Garden in late September, just days after Adams became the first New York City mayor indicted while in office.

CNN —The elusive deep-water oarfish – considered to be a harbinger of bad news – was spotted yet again on the shores of Encinitas, California. “We took samples and froze the specimen awaiting further study and final preservation in the Marine Vertebrate Collection,” Ben Frable, manager of the Scripps Oceanography Marine Vertebrate Collection, said in the post. “Like with the previous oarfish, this specimen and the samples taken from it will be able to tell us much about the biology, anatomy, genomics and life history of oarfish,” Frable said in the post. The fish was found in good condition according to the release, and it was taken in for examination and preservation to become a part of the organization’s Marine Vertebrate Collection. “It may have to do with changes in ocean conditions and increased numbers of oarfish off our coast,” Frable said.

Inside the Quest to Make Fusion Energy a Reality
  + stars: | 2024-11-15 | by ( Raymond Zhong | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +15 min
The Quest to Build a Star on Earth Start-ups say we’re closer than ever to near-limitless, zero-carbon energy from fusion. Today’s fusion start-ups aren’t just preparing for this moment in the lab. Such advances helped the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory produce more fusion energy than the energy in the incoming laser beams, for the briefest of moments, in 2022. They also helped European researchers generate record amounts of fusion energy at a facility in Britain last year. What worries researchers is how much some fusion start-ups are promising, and how soon.

Drought has parched the Northeast United States for weeks, draining reservoirs, priming the landscape for damaging wildfires and pushing politicians to implement water-saving measures. More than 58% of the Northeast is in moderate drought or worse, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. In New York City, brush fires scorched portions of Prospect and Inwood Hill parks over the past week. Earlier this month, Mayor Eric Adams issued a drought watch, ordering city agencies to prepare water conservation plans. Here are the photos that tell the story of how this has played out for people in the Northeast.

Investigating Bathydevius and its adaptations could reveal more about the midnight zone, which is the largest habitat on Earth and accounts for 70% of all seawater on the planet. A study describing the new species published Tuesday in the journal Deep Sea Research Part I. “The deep water column is maybe the last place you’d expect to find a nudibranch,” Robison said. New York City Mayor Eric Adams asked a judge on Monday to set an earlier trial date in his federal corruption case next year, arguing the current date would impede Adams’ participation in his mayoral reelection campaign, according to court documents. In a letter to the court, Adams’ lawyer, Alex Spiro, requested the trial to begin weeks earlier on April 1, rather than later that month. He added that the prosecution will “cast a cloud” over Adams’ campaign until it’s resolved by a New York jury at trial. Adams pledged to fight the charges and stay on as mayor. “This was a multiyear scheme to buy favor with a single New York City politician on the rise,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said at a news conference in September.
