CNN —Brazilian police have arrested five people, including a former adviser to ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, over an alleged plot to assassinate President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2022, authorities said. The coup plot was conceived in late 2022, before Lula took office, according to Federal Police. The alleged plot also involved other military personnel with training in special forces, the Federal Police said. In February of this year, Bolsonaro was placed under investigation over the alleged plot. In October 2022, Lula narrowly beat Bolsonaro in the presidential election.

The suspected attacker was affiliated with former President Jair Bolsonaro’s right-wing party, according to CNN affiliate CNN Brasil. Police found messages on Luiz’s social media criticizing and threatening state authorities, CNN Brasil reported. The suspect then tried to enter the Supreme Court building, but was unable to, and a second explosion was detonated outside the door, Leão added. A car found at the scene belonged to the suspected perpetrator, CNN Brasil reported, citing local police. Earlier, CNN Brasil reported an eyewitness saw a man with a backpack near the Supreme Court.

CNN —Dengue cases are surging in the Americas, with cases reported topping 5.2 million as of this week, surpassing a yearly record set in 2023, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). PAHO spokesperson Ashley Baldwin told CNN Thursday that 5,214,480 cases of dengue have been reported in the Americas as of Wednesday. In all of 2023, the total number of cases reported in the region was 4,572,765. “We are in an emergency situation because of dengue,” PAHO Director Jarbas Barbosa said in a news briefing Thursday. Early detection and access to proper medical care will reduce the probability of dying due to severe dengue,” Baldwin added.

The police said it issued 16 search warrants and 6 arrest warrants in Brasília and Rio de Janeiro as part of an investigation into the alleged “insertion of false Covid-19 vaccination data” into government databases in 2021 and 2022. The data was allegedly used to fake vaccination certificates to deceive authorities in Brazil and the U.S.

BRASILIA, Brazil — The office of Brazil’s prosecutor-general has presented its first charges against some of the thousands of people who authorities say stormed government buildings in an effort to overturn former President Jair Bolsonaro’s loss in the October election.
