The losses in Lahaina from the fire now include the historic Baldwin Home, which houses the restoration foundation’s main office and was considered the oldest house still standing on the island of Maui. It was built between 1834-35 by the Rev. Ephraim Spaulding, a missionary from Massachusetts who prized its proximity to the waters where whaling ships once anchored. The home contained the wooden rocking chairs that the family of the Rev. Unlike others in Lahaina whose families in the area stretch back generations, Ms. Morrison, 75, from Berkeley, Calif., happened upon the town while sailing around the Hawaiian islands in 1975.

The case provides an unfiltered glimpse into the cottage industry of consultants and brokers that has flourished alongside the growth of Amazon's third-party marketplace. A former Amazon employee was sentenced last year to 10 months in prison, while a consultant who also sold products on Amazon is serving 20 months in prison. In one case, Rosenberg made 33 different PayPal payments worth $18,650 to an Amazon employee in Seattle in exchange for confidential information about third-party seller accounts. He later admitted he made false statements about the case and admitted to bribing Amazon employees in a public apology posted online.

"On some occasions, I paid bribes, directly and indirectly, to Amazon employees to obtain annotations and reinstate suspended accounts. Behind the scenes, scammers have for years resorted to illicit tactics to squash competitors, artificially boost their listings or bypass Amazon's marketplace rules. A skeleton Halloween decoration was reported stolen from a Chicago front lawn on October 13, The Chicago Tribune reported, amounting to $600 in losses. Home Depot's skeletons have been popular since they first launched, leading to record Halloween sales for the home improvement chain in 2020. The $300 skeletons sold out by the end of September, ahead of Halloween. In October of 2022, the skeletons remain sold out at Home Depot and getting one isn't easy. "We encourage all our customers that experience this to reach out to local law enforcement," Home Depot told Insider in a statement.
