Finnish software company One Click LCA, which aims to make construction more sustainable, has raised 40 million euros, $43 million, in its first external funding round after it was bootstrapped for the past 22 years. One Click LCA helps them measure, report, and reduce emissions of their products and projects. It embeds emissions data into every decision, suggests changes to reduce environmental impact and improve circularity, and allows users to model changes. One Click LCA puts this number at 57% based on its aggregation of existing data and its own calculations. "That's not possible to do after you have commissioned the design," Pasanen said.

David Ferrucci, a prominent artificial intelligence researcher who led the team that created IBM Watson , has raised nearly $60 million for his AI startup called Elemental Cognition, according to a regulatory filing. The filing on Thursday says the company sold $59.95 million worth of equity to 17 investors and plans to raise another $5.75 million. Ferrucci led IBM Watson between 2006 and the end of 2012, during which time the computer system famously won "Jeopardy!" He then ran AI research for Bridgewater Associates, one of the world's largest hedge funds. In January of last year, the company sold its Watson Health unit for an undisclosed amount to private equity firm Francisco Partners.

Some on Wall Street are getting increasingly bullish on the S & P 500 , raising their price targets for the index. It increased its year-end S & P 500 price target from 4,400 to 4,900 — the highest in CNBC's Market Strategist survey . Mid-cap tech stocks : Ball said "mid tech is the equity place for tomorrow." Big tech stocks have contributed to much of the gains this year — although the rally is broadening out — but other well established "but not gigantic" tech stocks have "more premise looking ahead." Energy stocks: The S & P 500 energy subsector has underperformed this year, gaining just 1% to date.
