CNN —Tottenham Hotspur player Rodrigo Bentancur has been given a seven-match domestic suspension and fined around $126,000 (£100,000) for a comment he made in an interview about teammate Son Heung-min. According to the FA, the midfielder acted in “an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or brought the game into disrepute” with the comment, which was judged to be an “aggravated breach” of FA regulations because it made reference to Son’s ethnicity. In June, soon after the video clip was circulated online, Son said that Bentancur had apologized for making a “mistake,” adding that his teammate “would not mean to ever intentionally say something offensive. He will be eligible to play again against Nottingham Forest on December 26, as well as in Europa League games. The 27-year-old has made 14 appearances for Tottenham this season, scoring in the club’s 2-1 defeat against Ipswich on November 10.

CNN —English Premier League (EPL) referee David Coote has been suspended pending investigation after a video went viral on social media appearing to show him making negative comments about Liverpool and the club’s former manager Jurgen Klopp. The video, which has not been verified by CNN, was posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday. The Welsh club earned its second consecutive promotion, this time to League One - English football’s third tier – following a 6-0 win over Forest Green Rovers on Saturday at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham, Wales. CNN —Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has been charged by the English Football Association (FA) for allegedly breaching betting rules 50 times last year. The FA, English football’s governing body, announced on Thursday that the charges relate to bets Tonali is said to have made between August 12 and October 12. “Due to this ongoing process, Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to offer further comment at this time.”The FA declined to comment on whether any new sanctions could run concurrently with Tonali’s ongoing ban. Tonali is not the only Premier League player to miss much of this season for betting on matches. In January, Brentford striker Ivan Toney returned from an eight-month ban after admitting to 232 breaches of the FA’s betting rules.

Reuters —England under-20 international Charlie Hughes gave new meaning to the phrase ‘late winner’ when he scored after 20 minutes of second-half stoppage time to earn Wigan Athletic a 1-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers in England’s third tier on Tuesday. The unusually long period of stoppage time at the end of the League One match came about because of an injury to referee Adam Herczeg after a fall early in the second half. The England under-20 international caught the ball on the volley to score the latest goal recorded in a match in the long history of the English Football League (EFL) to win the game. The victory moved Wigan into the top half of League One standings, sitting 11th with 34 points. Wycombe is 17th on 30 points, four above the relegation zone.

CNN —English soccer clubs Coventry City and Sheffield Wednesday have jointly condemned a “racist gesture” allegedly aimed at Coventry midfielder Kasey Palmer during their match on Saturday. Palmer, who is Black, said it was a “couple” of fans making “monkey chants.”The alleged incident took place during a match in the Championship, English football’s second tier, which Coventry won 2-1 at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough stadium. “Disappointed to even have to come on here & write this,” Palmer said on X, formerly known as Twitter. “They’re ignorant people… You can be booed or whistled when you’re away from home, that’s normal, but what happened today has no place in football,” Maignan said. The match resumed less than 10 minutes later, and Milan would win a dramatic encounter 3-2 in the final minutes.
