Lord's Cricket Ground, London CNN —At Lord’s Cricket Ground in the quiet, well-heeled streets of northwest London, different architectural eras collide together in a mishmash of mismatching styles representing the old and the new. And never is that collision between the old and new more evident than when Lord’s, the self-styled “home” of cricket and one of its most prestigious grounds, hosts the annual schoolboys fixture Eton vs. Harrow. CNN has contacted Eton and Harrow for comment but had not received a response at the time of publication. NEW YORK, Oct 9 (Reuters) - Nike released a replica jersey for England goalkeeper Mary Earps on Monday, after facing widespread criticism for not selling the popular Women's World Cup finalist's shirt. Earps was one of the standout stars of the Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand this year, earning FIFA's Golden Glove award. She was voted England Women's Player of the Year last month . More than 170,000 people signed a Change.org petition calling on Nike to sell jerseys for Earps and other women goalkeepers. The England men's goalkeeper jersey is available to buy on Nike’s website.

Willis signed for Toulouse last November after Wasps collapsed but was allowed to play for England in this year's Six Nations. "They will only play for England while they are here (in camp)," he said. "It's the best for club, it's the best for country, it's the best for the player.

Williamson captained England to victory at Euro 2021. Every cloud has a silver liningAfter injuring her knee during Arsenal’s Women’s Super League match against Manchester United in April, Williamson was later given the diagnosis that soccer players dread the most: a ruptured ACL. England women, FA reach agreement over bonuses, says Bright

The squad had initially paused discussions ahead of the Women's World Cup, where England finished runners-up after losing the final to Spain. But the FA's decision not to offer the England team bonus payments on top of the fees they will earn from FIFA had been a bone of contention in the build-up to the tournament. FIFA had announced a financial contribution specifically earmarked for all World Cup players, which meant the allocation per England squad member was $195,000 as they were runners-up. England manager Sarina Wiegman said she was expecting the agreement and looked forward to turning attention back to football. "The conversations had been going really well but the World Cup was ahead of us, so they needed to stop and then start up after the World Cup," she said.

"We want our legacy to be that we leave the women's game in a better place for those who follow us. That includes contracts, conditions and protections for players," Lucy Bronze, who helped England to a runners-up finish at the Women's World Cup, said in a statement. Molango urged fellow trade unions to support the implementation of recommendations from Carney's review, including the need to establish a Professional Football Negotiating and Consultative Committee (PFNCC) for the women's game. "There's so much changing in the women's game right now," said Lioness Katie Zelem, who is a member of the PFA's Players' Board. Spain won the Women’s World Cup for the first time last month yet, just two weeks on, no one is talking about the success. In that intoxicating, finite pocket of time, Spain’s players had the freedom to lose themselves in the victory of their lives. The decades-long battle for equality in women’s soccer, and society, has a way to go but nothing changes in silence. But beyond the headlines, this is a story which symbolizes the problems within women’s soccer and society, of women not being respected or listened to. England women’s head coach Sarina Wiegman dedicated her UEFA Women’s Coach of the Year award to the Spanish national team.

SYDNEY—The England women’s national team had spent a couple of years doing its best to show that it was unburdened by a soccer history of near misses and epic collapses. Unlike the men’s team, which hasn’t won a major trophy since 1966, the Lionesses were proving to be serial winners. They outmuscled opponents, swaggered through tournaments, and, last summer, became European champions.

Soccer Football - FIFA Women's World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 - Final - Fans in London watch Spain v England - BOXPARK Wembley, London, Britain - August 20, 2023 England fans react after England lose the world cup final Action Images via Reuters/Andrew Couldridge Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Aug 20 (Reuters) - England soccer fans went home in bitter disappointment on Sunday after losing the Women's World Cup final 1-0 to Spain, but in defeat many of them also found inspiration and hope for future generations in the sport. "They might have not won, and it's so sad, but they've done so much for women's football, and that's what matters," said Jennifer Maidment, a 25-year-old student who watched the game in London. The scale of the national excitement reflected the growing public profile of women's soccer in England, where the team's run to the final built on their victory at the European Championship last year. "We never had any role models as girls when we were younger, so to have role models now is amazing. For older generations, the progress since the first England women's international match in 1972 was clear.

In London, theatergoers have flocked to “Dear England,” a hit play that chronicles the drama and anguish of the men’s national soccer team in its long quest for another World Cup title, now at 57 years and counting. In Sydney on Sunday, the England women’s team might finally get the job done. England will face off against Spain in the Women’s World Cup final, the first for either team. While they are closely matched, England’s impressive march through the tournament has spurred hopes that “football’s coming home,” in the ever-optimistic words of “The Three Lions,” the unofficial anthem of the men’s team. If anything, it makes them look even less formidable and more culpable, if women do the job.”

Fast-forward to the upcoming Women’s World Cup, which starts on July 20 in Australia and New Zealand, and a host of the game’s best players will also be absent because of an injury which appears to be endemic in the women’s game. But why are so many female soccer players suffering from the same injury? “At elite clubs in the men’s game, players have access to exceptional academies and training facilities from a very young age. Beth Mead starred for England in its Euro 2022 victory but will be missing the Women's World Cup. According to the findings, 34% of women players reported discomfort specifically in their heel and the majority use specialized insoles.

CNN —An independent report into the culture of cricket in England and Wales has found racism, class-based discrimination, elitism and sexism to be “widespread” and “deep rooted” in the sport. The “Holding a Mirror Up to Cricket” report was written by the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) and received more than 4,400 responses to its call for evidence between oral and written submissions. … The decline in Black cricket in England and Wales has been well documented and subject to much public debate for many years. Regarding sexism, the report said: “Women are still seen as an ‘add on’ to the men’s game. “The apology should acknowledge that racism, sexism, elitism and class-based discrimination have existed, and still exist, in the game, and recognise the impact on victims of discrimination.

NZ women swap white shorts for blue over period anxieties

April 4 (Reuters) - The New Zealand women's soccer team will swap their home kit's white shorts for teal blue to ease players' period anxieties, the country's football association (NZF) said on Monday. "The absence of white shorts now is fantastic for women with any kind of period anxiety," New Zealand striker Hannah Wilkinson said. In the end it just helps us focus more on performance and shows a recognition and appreciation of women's health." NZF's decision follows similar moves by the England women's team, clubs including Manchester City and the Ireland women's rugby team. "As an organisation, New Zealand Football wholeheartedly supports the shift away from white shorts for our women's international players," chief executive Andrew Pragnell said.
England women switch to blue shorts after period concerns

April 3 (Reuters) - The England women's team will swap their white shorts for blue, the Football Association (FA) said on Monday, after players voiced concerns about playing in white on their period. European champions England will wear blue shorts for both their home and away kits for this month's friendlies against Brazil and Australia and at the Women's World Cup, which will be held in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to Aug. 20. Women's teams at Manchester City and West Bromwich Albion have since switched to navy and burgundy shorts, respectively, while the Ireland women's rugby team also announced a change to navy blue shorts last month. The issue of women athletes wearing white clothing was also brought up at last year's Wimbledon tennis championships when female players spoke about the anxiety of being forced to wear white on their period. The grasscourt Grand Slam will make an exception to its strict all-white dress code and allow female players to wear dark coloured undershorts from this year's tournament.

The issue of maternity leave for professional athletes has gradually come into sharper focus in recent years. In 2019, sportswear giant Nike introduced a new maternity policy for all its sponsored athletes, guaranteeing pay and bonuses for 18 months around pregnancy. World soccer governing body FIFA introduced 14 weeks of maternity leave in 2020, the same year that the Women’s National Basketball Association announced fully paid maternity leave as part of its collective bargaining agreement for the first time. Rugby Players’ Association general secretary Christian Day described the new policy as a “significant step forward” for the women’s game in England. “This new policy ensures that our women’s players will be better supported through parenthood when representing England,” Day said.
Denis Pellerin/Handout via REUTERSLONDON, Dec 30 (Reuters) - Britain recognised Queen guitarist Brian May, several English "Lionesses" who won the European women's soccer championship and diplomats involved in the response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine in King Charles' first New Year's honours list. Four members of the England women's soccer team received honours, with captain Leah Williamson awarded an OBE, while the tournament's golden boot winner Beth Mead, defender Lucy Bronze and all-time top scorer Ellen White received MBEs. Queen Elizabeth died in September, making the New Year's honours the first to be awarded by King Charles since he came to the throne. The list is drawn up by independent committees, before it is approved by the prime minister and the monarch.
CNN —For many, the name Patrick Vieira brings to mind one of the most dominant midfielders in English Premier League history. To the younger generation, he is now one of the up-and-coming modern managers emerging in the Premier League. But Vieira wants to remind the world that he was born in Senegal and is proud to be African. “The diversity of our French and French national team was a success as well as winning the World Cup.”Patrick Vieira holds aloft the Premier League trophy after the Premier League match between Arsenal and Leicester City in 2004. The former Arsenal captain is currently the only manager from an ethnic minority in the Premier League and only the 10th Black manager since the competition’s inception in 1992.
