CNN —A fired Disney employee allegedly hacked into the company’s servers to alter its restaurant menus, including falsifying allergen information and printing profane language, according to a federal criminal complaint filed in Florida. Disney identified and removed all altered menus before they were shipped to restaurants, according to the complaint. Michael Scheuer, who worked as a menu production manager for Disney, was fired in June for misconduct, according to the complaint. Scheuer allegedly hacked into Disney’s menu creation servers multiple times to manipulate and disrupt the menus, such as changing prices and adding profane language. Disney printed the altered QR codes but identified and removed them before shipping to any restaurants, according to the complaint.

Newly released federal data shows the US tech workforce is younger than the workforce at large and getting younger still. Tech workers under 25 are becoming more common, while the proportion of workers older than 40 shrinks. There's an age-old perception that tech workers should be young so they can move fast and break things. One of the top qualifications to land a tech job, it seems, is to possess a birth certificate dated after 1990. Women make up just 22% of tech workers — the same proportion of jobs they held in 2005.

CNN —A major Supreme Court ruling Friday that shifted power from the executive branch to the judiciary stands to transform how the federal government works. By overturning a 1984 precedent, the court’s conservative majority has made countless regulations vulnerable to legal challenge. The Supreme Court ruling could boost efforts by conservatives who have taken aim at the Biden Environmental Protection Agency’s rules limiting planet-warming pollution from vehicles, oil and gas wells and pipelines, and power plants. The ruling has injected legal uncertainty into regulations of all types, including those on technology, labor, the environment and health care. But the Supreme Court has yet to decide a case heard this term that might gut that limitation.

New York CNN —A class action lawsuit filed Tuesday alleges that RTX Corporation, the multinational aerospace and defense systems giant formerly known as Raytheon Technologies, has been discriminating against job seekers who are 40 years or older. The ads that refer to “Recent Graduate Positions” indicate that applicants should either have graduated from college or graduate school very recently or have no more than 12 or 24 months of related work experience. While the positions may be lower level, they are not necessarily low paying, with salary ranges that can run north of $100,000. We believe these claims are entirely without merit and we will actively defend our hiring practices,” company spokesman Chris Johnson told CNN. Between 2019 and 2023, Goldstein applied to at least seven of Raytheon’s recent graduate positions for which he met all the qualifications save those requiring the newness of his degrees or the short duration of work experience.

New York CNN —A federal agency accused a popular gas station chain of discriminating against Black, Native American and multiracial applicants in its hiring practices. The Sheetz criminal screening process disproportionately screened out applicants from those legally protected groups, the lawsuit announced by the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on Thursday alleged. In a statement, Sheetz said it “does not tolerate discrimination of any kind.”“We take these allegations seriously. As part of the hiring process, applicants must answer questions about their criminal justice history and go through a background check through a third-party vendor. The lawsuit seeks an order for Sheetz to end its current hiring practice and create equal employment policies and programs.

CNN —Most employers must offer “reasonable accommodations” to workers related to pregnancy or childbirth, including providing time off for an abortion, according to a final rule issued Monday by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The rule clarifies the provisions of the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, which became law last June after Congress passed it as part of a federal government spending package in late 2022. The measures apply to employers with at least 15 workers unless the accommodations would cause “undue hardship” for the employer. It also provides many examples of accommodations and encourages employers and workers to communicate early and frequently about the requests. “The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act is a life-changing protection for pregnant and postpartum workers nationwide, ensuring they aren’t forced off the job or denied the accommodations they need for their health.”

That's because, according to a survey from Resume Builder, 36% of hiring managers said they were biased against Gen Z candidates. So why are some hiring managers not down with younger or older workers? Among the hiring managers who admitted to bias against Gen Z job seekers, more than three-quarters cited younger workers' lack of experience. Nearly two-thirds were worried older candidates would experience health problems, and almost half of all hiring managers identified worries that older workers didn't have sufficient experience with technology.
