Sherrill and to elect the first Democratic woman governor of New Jersey,” Mackler said. Sherrill is the first woman to enter the New Jersey race. EMILY’s List has also endorsed Rep. Once upon a time, Heather Graham really wanted to play a murderer. Fresh off career-making turns as the porn star Rollergirl in "Boogie Nights" and the short shorts-wearing CIA agent Felicity Shagwell in "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me," Graham wasn't having trouble getting work. "I'm just really intrigued, not only as an actress but as an audience member, by movies that are from a female storytelling perspective." But Graham didn't dwell on what could have been. The network just didn't really believe in it, and they pulled it after an episode.

Following Biden's endorsement, the president's reelection campaign committee rebranded itself to "Harris for President," handing her the keys to a $91 million war chest. Beyond seeking to upstage the first female vice president, other ambitious Democrats would have to raise their national profile in a way Harris does not. AdvertisementThe prospect of Harris' nomination is far from a political panacea for nervous Democrats. As leader of his party, Biden pushed the DNC to rubber stamp his plan to shake up the primary calendar. If the virtual vote moves forward, ambitious Democrats will face an even tighter window to organize opposition to Harris' nomination.

Eventually it grew, and Hachamovitch expanded and established abortion clinics across the country, from Long Island to Arizona to Texas. AdvertisementAdvocates say that independent clinics — in 2022, Bronx Abortion was one of two in a borough of about 1.4 million people — are essential to providing abortion care. But even in New York, a state that has committed to protecting and supporting abortion rights, independent clinics are at risk. According to the Abortion Care Network, "threats to these clinics are a threat to abortion access overall." But they agree on one thing: At any given moment, a small independent clinic like Bronx Abortion might be forced to shut down.

Laphonza Butler, center, will not run for a full Senate term in 2024. There will be two Senate races on the November 2024 ballot: a special election to fill the Senate term through January 2025 and a general election for the full Senate term ending in January 2031. Given the Democratic lean of the state, there's a strong chance of a Senate race between two Democrats.

In an interview with the New York Times before being appointed as California's new US senator, Butler said that detractors of Harris need to "cut the bullshit." Emily's mother, Andrea Halnon, was also afraid to jump out of a plane, but she "met her fear with joy and determination," her daughter says. The door slid open, the plane was moving 100 miles per hour, and a torrent of wind rushed in. Former union leader and Democratic insider Laphonza Butler was sworn in as the newest member of the Senate on Tuesday, replacing California Sen. Dianne Feinstein after her death and becoming only the third Black female senator in history. The first was Democratic Sen. Carol Moseley Braun of Illinois, who served one term in the 1990s. She was a giant in California politics, having been the first female mayor of San Francisco and a force in the state's Democratic circles. In the Senate, Feinstein was the first female chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and the first female top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee. "Laphonza will carry the baton left by Sen. Feinstein (and) continue to break glass ceilings and fight for all Californians in Washington D.C.," Newsom said.

Gavin Newsom has chosen Laphonza Butler, the president of EMILY's List, to fill the seat of the late Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the governor's office confirmed to NBC News. Feinstein, the longest-serving woman in the Senate, died Thursday at the age of 90. Newsom, a Democrat, had provided substantial clues in recent months about how he'd choose Feinstein's replacement, if her seat were to become vacant. He had previously said that he would appoint a Black woman if either of California's Senate seats opened up. Butler, however, will not have any constraints on her future plans and will be free to run for the seat if she chooses.

Naming Laphonza Butler to fill the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein's seat appears to meet California Gov. Or has Newsom just given Butler a massive boost in becoming the Golden State's fourth elected female senator? And while critics have pointed out that her address until the appointment was in Maryland, Butler "is deeply ingrained in the DNA of California politics." Butler, who will be sworn into the Senate this week, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Monday morning, hasn't indicated whether she wants to stay in the job. RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A Democratic Virginia legislative candidate whose race was rattled by the revelation that she and her husband livestreamed themselves having sex moved forward with her campaign Tuesday and drew some early support in the high-stakes contest. But state Sen. L. Louise Lucas, a leading Democratic lawmaker in Virginia, quickly came to her defense, calling on voters to “make this the biggest fundraising day of (Gibson's) campaign.” Many women voters retweeted Lucas with a link to donate to Gibson's campaign. Linton said she plans to donate another $100 to Gibson's campaign even though she can't vote for her because she lives outside her district. Mark Rozell, dean of George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government, said the sex videos are a huge distraction from Gibson's campaign. But Monica Hutchinson, a legislative coordinator for a youth justice organization, said she supported Gibson before the videos surfaced and she will continue to support her.

Over the past year, Biden has signed multiple executive orders aimed at shoring up access to abortion rights, including the ability to access abortion pills or travel out of states that have banned the procedures. Biden's campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said the organizing power of the three abortion rights groups was essential to Democrats' strong performance in the 2022 midterms and will be again. The June 24, 2022, Dobbs decision struck down the 1972 Roe v. Wade ruling that had largely protected abortion rights in the U.S. Strategists in both parties have attributed Democratic strength in 2022, in part, to higher support from people who back abortion rights. The biggest expansions of abortion rights over the past year occurred in states, including Michigan and Minnesota, where Democrats control both the legislature and the governor's office.
