BI was able to identify just six cases that settled for $50,000 or more; half of those, including the England case, involved prisoner deaths. A New York prisoner won $2,000 for claims that he suffered debilitating pain while prison officials delayed treating his degenerative osteoarthritis. BI interviewed 10 attorneys who represented prisoners or their families in cases that prevailed; they all said the cases would have struggled to succeed without counsel. The underlying Eighth Amendment claim, he said, entailed abuse with the potential to infuriate even jurors sympathetic to law enforcement.

Weinstein’s specific diagnosis is chronic myeloid leukemia, a form of cancer of the bone marrow, the source says, adding that he is undergoing treatment at Rikers Island in New York. Weinstein’s longtime spokesperson, Juda Engelmayer, declined to comment on Weinstein’s diagnosis. A man previously identified as a leader in a “vicious” white supremacist gang was one of three inmates killed earlier this week in a Nevada prison fight, officials said. Zackaria Luz, 43, died after the fight Tuesday at Ely State Prison in eastern Nevada, the White Pine County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Wednesday. In a news release Wednesday, the Nevada Department of Corrections said an investigation into the incident is ongoing and the prison remains on lockdown. A second inmate, Connor Brown, was also fatally injured in the fight, the sheriff’s office said. The new Republican trend of casting doubt on the integrity of the 2024 election in advance was exhibited by Sen. Ted Cruz on Wednesday in an interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins. Roughly half of US adults, 49%, want to see federal politicians work to enshrine abortion access nationally, while 37% say abortion laws should be left to states, and 14% call for nationwide restrictions. The poll comes in the wake of two years of largely state-level skirmishes over abortion laws following the overturn of Roe – political fights with tangible consequences for residents’ access to abortion in those states. The share who view their state’s abortion laws as too restrictive rises to 43% in the states where abortion is currently legal with gestational limits of 6-18 weeks, and to 52% in the states where it is banned. Among those who disapprove of overturning Roe, about two-thirds (64%) in states with gestational limits and three-quarters (74%) in states where abortion is banned find their state’s laws too restrictive. The CNN poll was conducted by SSRS from April 18-23 among a random national sample of 1,212 adults drawn from a probability-based panel, including 967 registered voters.

The Wall Street Journal declared that the transcripts of Biden’s deposition with Hur released on Tuesday painted “a more nuanced picture” than the report indicated. Strangely, that characterization of Biden didn’t find its way into his report — and, thus, the crush of ensuing news stories. To be fair to news organizations, they were faced with a thorny, difficult decision after the Hur report dropped. On the other hand, leaning hard into the report, producing scores of stories and television segments about Hur’s characterization of Biden’s age, proved ultimately to be unwise as well. What news organizations can do now, however, is forcefully acknowledge that the deposition transcript poured cold water on Hur’s over-the-top characterization of Biden’s mental fitness.

"The Chinese cloud services market remains conservative, relying heavily on government and state-owned enterprises to drive growth," tech market analysis firm Canalys said in a report Wednesday. Training AI models on the cloud, following a surge of interest in the potential of ChatGPT-like services, has been expected to drive the industry's growth. A man filed a class-action lawsuit against United Airlines after the company lost his luggage. Jack Lipeles alleged in the suit that United falsely told him his luggage was stolen. When Lipeles arrived in Los Angeles, "he went to pick up his luggage, but was unable to find his bag. With this injection of capital Shanghai-based GTA Semiconductor, one of China's largest auto chipmakers manufacturers by production, has in less than two years racked up over $2.7 billion of mostly state funds, according to the Securities Times. Reuters could not determine whether the auto chipmaker's latest fund-raising was tied to this new fund or not.
